I just saw the newest performance of Bl00d Brothers, which just opened this weekend at the Main Street theater in Vancouver Washington. They call it the Art Equity Theater and they do the MOST challenging and artsy plays in the Portland area by far. If you appreciate the off Broadway feel of small theater, that delivers BIG on talent, you need to treat yourself to a trip north.

I discovered this little gem of a theater last year and every show I have seen there has been surprising and edgy. But last nights performance of Bl00d Brothers, a musical about twins separated at birth because their poor young mother couldn't afford to keep them both, and their fateful re-uniting - written by Willy Russel - re-interpreted by Llewellyn Rhoe, simply filled the theater with passion, song and soulfulness. Set in late 1800s England this play has been done by others less successfully when they try to Americanize it. But I think Mr. Rhoe is a purist, and the authentic atmosphere is enhance by the British accents and colloquialisms of the time. The performance by Sarah McGregor, who played a very fertile and prolific young mother struggling to hold her family together was both heart warming and heart braking at the same time. Many of the actors like Sandy MacKenzier, Stefan Kay and Joey LeBard are seasoned pros at the Arts Equity theater, along with newer talent like Dustin Richards among others whom I have seen perform a wide variety of challenging rolls form rapists to rouges, but who knew they could also sing? I believe this may have been the first musical by Rasanen and Rhoe, but even if you don't like musicals, and just want a great story...Bl00d Brothers at the Main Street theater in Vancouver Washington will take your mind places and thrill you for a refreshingly modest ticket price of like $10 - $25. Without a doubt the best value theater experience going.

Pros: Great theater experience every time

Cons: Short trip over the bridge to Vancouver to discover something really new - worth it!
