We love Firstenberg. The family swimtimes are perfect, ou 10 year old swims, we excercise upstairs for an invigorating 80mins. We like the gym so much, we even come on the weekends. There is a downside, of course, and sadly, it's a biggie. As the weather turned from winter to spring, the gym became uncomfortably sweaty (sticking to the seat of a recumbant bike=yeck!). Then spring turned to summer with temps in the mid 80's and I found out Firstenberg's bizarro secret; NO AIR CONDITIONING. Yep, you read it here. The building is built green, with a minimal carbon impact (yay) but the designers didn't put in AC! Grody to the max, right? Not to go all delicate-victorian-princess on the issue, but I can't excercise in steamy 80+ temps. I wilt like a daisy in a steam room and feel my irritation with things like having to wait to use a treadmill or people wearing too much cologne goes up and up way beyond what is reasonable or normal for me.
So, in the summer, I guess we will skip the gym, except on the weekends, when we can get in super early. Too bad, huh?

Firstenburg is a great center. We have been members since it opened. The most affordable gym around for a family! We LOVE the indoor track, especially since it rains here most of the time. We are able to get our run in no matter the weather. They have all of the fitness equipment you would expect a gym to have, with many treadmills and ellipticals, they don't have enough upright stationary bikes but have many recumbent bikes. They have an aerobic studio and also spinning classes, yoga, etc. The gym is huge and is divided by a curtain so it can be used for several activities at once. The pool is great but its chopped up into sections so you won't find a big olympic type pool. They do have a lap area if you like to swim laps. They have a 'lazy river' which is used for a great aerobic swim class as well. Teen activity room with video games which is supervised. The new library is right next door. Sometimes there are kids milling around outside but the staff does a fairly good job at making sure there isn't much goofing off. MUCH to offer for a family. If you are looking for a singles-looking for a date-type atmosphere then this is NOT your place.

Firstenburg is such an awesome gym. They have a pool with a slide, a hot tub, basketball court, empty side rooms for yoga, dance, etc. classes, and they have a complete upstairs gym, with a miniature inside track. The Gym has huge open windows instead of a flat boring wall so you can look outside while doing your workout. My family and I used to go there a ton until we moved across town. It's a great place to relieve the stress of a rough day or get some great family time in at the pool, racing around the track, or playing a game of basketball.
