Sunday morning: we waited for a while... then the food finally came, and it was the most tasteless, bland food I have ever eaten. And I was so hungry!! The contents of half a salt & pepper shaker couldn't make this food taste any better....
VERY VERY bland and too much money for that....

I really wanted to like this place! Three of us went, and after a long wait to get a table we ordered and started the long wait to get our food. An hour later the waiter told us the kitchen had lost our ticket. Two of us got ours eventually, but another hour after we got our food my husband FINALLY got his burger! And when he got it it was RARE!!! And I mean bloody and cold inside! The waiter did give us a free dessert for our trouble, but we were too tired of sitting there to wait another hour and a half for my husband's burger, especially since the rest of us had been done with our meal forever! I did give the place another try (may have just been a bad night for them?) and went with a friend for drinks and appetizers in the bar. The first 4 appetizers we ordered were sold out. We finally got their bread stuffed with cheese which was excellent, and our waittress was great. I general, I am very dissappointed with this restaurant. Hopefully they will get their "S" together.

My boyfriend and I decided to give The Hi-Life a shot after going to The 5 Spot, it's sister restaurant, so many times. The Hi-Life was very nice in that it had a quieter and classier feel than the 5 Spot but still had several of the signature 5 Spot dishes on the menu. I had a wonderful Greek dish, the Mezzes Platter, that had just the right combination of flavors without being too overwhelming. The bottle of Greek wine that was paired with it was decent enough. My boyfriend enjoyed a penne dish which was nothing extraordinary but the chicken on top was very tasty. We finished our meal with an espresso cheesecake that was the perfect finale to our experience; not too rich but incredibly yummy! Our waitress was attentive and friendly and we loved that the atmosphere allowed us to have a more intimate dining experience as the restaurant was not crowded but wasn't dead either.
I will probably go back again to induldge my Greek food cravings!

Mediocre. Sunday 10:30 am. Needless to say had to wait for 35 minutes for a table. What we didn't expect was the 50 minute for the food to arrive after we ordered it. The waiter must have topped up my coffee about 7 times - he would have been better off giving the chef a hand. The place was stuffed - obviously the kicthen cannot cope when it gets like this. The food was bland too. We'll not be back.

Went to Hi life with 12 family members. They were very accommodating with our table and provided good service considering we had people rolling in over the space of an hour or so. Problems began as soon as the food started rolling in. Appetizers were terrible, the calamari was a soggy oily mess and the sauce was flavorless. Also had a bread platter that came with some equally flavorless dips. The mini ribs were the only thing that had any flavor at all. We ordered a duck confit and braised beef family style plates at my end of the table and they were both terrible!!!!!!!! Both were plainly not seasoned and tasteless which is really hard to do with a braised dish. The side dishes we ordered were equally flavorless. I would never recommend this place to anybody for any reason! Do not go unless you really enjoy tasteless overpriced food. Uggggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!

My parents really like this place, and I've been out there with them a few times. Generally it's pretty good (I work in the industry, so I may be a little more critical than most).

Anyway, last night we're in having dinner, and the service was incredibly bad. The guy was not particularly pleasant tableside, and he tried to walk away before I could place my drink order. When he showed up to take our dinner order, he just stood by the table and looked down at us. My mother finally had to say "we're ready if you are".

After we got our food order placed, we settled in to wait patiently for our salads. Meanwhile, our server was nowhere to be found. No stop by the table to check on us. No explanations. I could see what had happened. We'd gotten seated behind a couple of big-tops, and clearly the kitchen was just overwhelmed a little. That's fine, especially during the holidays & especially on a saturday, but our guy should've come and let us know.

I'd ordered the Pork Porterhouse with some kind of a fig sauce (fig sauce was very good). When I ordered, our boy told me it'd be medium unless I specified. I told him medium would be great, so imagine my surprise when it showed up well done (and not just well done, but blown away & dried out). Somebody else (manager or bartender?) was running our food at this point, so I sent the pork back with him. He asked if it would be fine to bring my starch and veg back while they re-cooked the pork (of course that would be fine), but then he brought back the same plate with indent of the pork chop still in the polenta.

When the pork did come back, it was cooked perfectly, and the sauce was, as noted, very good. After we'd finished, there was no offer of a dessert menu, much less an offer to comp a dessert to make up for the half-hearted service.

Overall, just a very frustrating dining experience from a place that I know can do better.

I went here for my 30th birthday. We called a week before and spoke with the woman who answered the phone and booked a private room for our large party. Upon arriving, we were told they don't do private rooms on Friday or Saturday, even though we were specifically told over the phone that we reserved a private room and no one in our group could be under 21 since the private room was in the bar area. There was no apology from the hostess and they were even 20 minutes late setting up our table. Now to the food...
The food was overpriced and not good. The peppercorn steak for $25 was a $4 cut , a third of which was gristle. The mashed potatoes that accompanied it were a powdery mess. However, the brussel sprouts were tasty. The two $8 crab cakes were the size of quarters. Our small plates that we ordered ahead of time came out with the rest our entrees. Our waiter was in a daze the whole time and included things on our bill that we did not even eat because they were out of stock.
Overall, it was a horrible experience! We probably would have never gone there in the first place and went only since we were told we could have a private room,. Don't go!

I went to this restaurant a few times. Once about a half a year ago with three other girlfriends. Another time about a month ago with another family including two children, and then just last week with my husband and daughter. We got seated promptly with menus but it took a real long time to get water and our order taken. We were about to leave but then the server arrived. She didn't acknowledge the extremely long wait time. We are usually very easy to please guests. But this time although the food was good, the service was so bad that it didn't matter. The customer service makes a huge difference in one's experience in a restaurant. If you want to have a good time, don't go to Hi Life.

If you haven't had brunch here yet, you're really missing out. The food is consistently of high quality, prepared to near perfection and the portions are what normal serving sizes should be. Not too big, not too skimpy. The staff is usually quite friendly as well. Parking is fairly easy.

If you like Atlas in Uvillage, you will be quite happy here too. I highly recommend it! Come and try it!

PS I highly recommend the Ham Scram and the french toast. We order a side order of the french toast and split it. It's very decadent, but so incredibly tasty!

I had wanted to visit the Hi-Life for a while and finally today my boyfriend and I decided to go for breakfast. We were greeted at the door, sat by the cold brick wall and were quickly given water and menus. So far, acceptable. I loved the interior and the menu had plenty of options. I decided to order the one thing that brought me down there from taking a peek on the website, the Cleanup on Aisle 12 Hash. Our food arrived fairly quickly and I dove right in, immediately stopping to feel the grit of sand in every chew. I thought maybe it was a fluke and tried another bite to find the same appalling feeling of eating sand. I tried yet a third bite and finally gave up. We were asked how the food was and my boyfriend said he thought something was wrong, and I let her know the food was inedible. She apologized, quickly took it away and asked what else she could get for me. Though I wanted to try something else, I refused to take the chance. We were not charged for my meal and quickly left. It was probably a rare occurrence, it's just too bad the one time I try the Hi-Life it spoiled my appetite, not only for food that morning, to ever go back.

Weekend brunch is always super packed but we always find quick seating at the bar and good service. Bummer you can't call ahead to put your name on the list! Late nights are always quick seating, good eats and best of all good drinks. They've got a killer Happy Hour menu. If you're into spicy try their Con sopressata Pizza; it?s only $3.00 after 10:00PM.

One of the things I miss the most about the east coast is the classic, hearty, cheap breakfasts offered at dinners you can guarantee are open and serving just about any hour of the day. Although the Hi-Life would be considered a tad more upscale then that, it certainly makes me feel like I'm home again. There aren't any astronomical lines to wait in, services is always quick, friendly, and displays more concern for refreshing your coffee than they do turning a table. While many brunch spots around town have what I call a pretentious menu ($12 for eggs and potatoes just cause they added rosemary and sage, whoopdy doo!) I find Hi-Lifs menu to be classic, hearty, plentiful, and priced just right. Also, I don't get that nauseating brunch hangover from having just downed a plate grease.

I live in Ballard and I love the Hi Life.

I love the pizzas during happy hour and the fish dishes for dinner. The service can be slow and a little disjointed at times, but it is always welcoming and courteous. My special requests are always honored with a smile, where other restaurants have given me the cold shoulder. My coworkers and I go every Friday for happy hour and dinner and have for over a year. It is always busy, but we still get our drinks and dinner quickly.

As a wine drinker, I find the wine list a little unsophisticated, but very well priced. AND the wine is served in a glass large enough for ample swirling and smelling- something rare in this town.

The food is tasty and the portions are large. I enjoy the aromas and flavors that come from the wood fire grill. However, I have refrained from ordering burgers, having 2 overcooked burgers in a row.

On the whole, I really enjoy the Hi Life. It is consistently good and the staff is always friendly and accomodating. Thumbs up from me!

The only reason this place gets a good review from citysearch is they pay for advertising. Look at the other reviews, the food and service at this place is a joke. Citysearch laughably calls it "$" when most meals are easily 20 dollars a person.

Pros: It is technically a restaraunt. They serve food.

Cons: Everything else.

.

Well, the first thing I have to say about the restaraunt is that the food is good! Not great, but palpatable... Even though it cost us an arm and a leg! $15 for a plate of vegetables?!?!? The service the night I went there was HORRIBLE! Me and another person I was there with got regular soda to drink, because we are not alcoholics (which is who this restaraunt is obviously for!) and got sodas that tasted surprisingly like they had hard liquor in them! WHAT? I don't know what the problem was, but it was unacceptable. Next, DON'T EVER CALL ME Monsier or Mi' Lady (especially Mi' Lady!) unless I am in France! This is not a French restaraunt! The food, as I said was okay, but the service was slow and grating! I ended up drinking water, but only got about one fill on my glass before I stopped trying to flag down the waitress with her gut hanging out from under the short black shirt she was wearing! YUCK! I really liked the idea of the large Barn-like doors opening to the outside, until the fire department roared by every so often (Right down the street!) and I noticed a bee (no, not a bumble bee. The stinging type!) flying around my table and had to leave. Overall I had a good well-done hamburger, but will not be gracing them with my presence ever again. Thanks for the $50 meal, and the classy floor show!

Everything for the most part was fine. Good service, food quality, and so on. On the other hand, the cocktails(2 Patron margaritas and a long island) were awful. Instead a splash of coke in the long isle, it basically looked like a coke. And the $9.50 rita had hardly any Patron in it. Not to mention, there was no float of Grand Marnier like I had asked. The sour mix they use in the Rita was horrible too. A little hint: A splash of O.J. can cut the tart taste out of a sub par margarita mix... A piece of advice, stick to the beer, it's hard to mess that up.

I'm torn with this place. The happy hour is decent - reasonable food and drinks that taste good; however, the breakfast was not good at all. Cold potatoes and bad eggs - not what you want at breakfast. AND worst bloody mary ever. It's like marinara sauce and honey - yep, as bad as it sounds. I've never had a problem with the service there. So go for happy hour and skip breakfast.

This place is just OK. On weekend nights there is a wait. Which, in my opinion, isn't bad when the place has a bar where you can wait. BUT, the bar service is really bad here. Prepare to be ignored. Ignored to the point of blatant rudeness. However, the waiters/waitresses I've had for table service have been great.

The two daily happy hours are great values, and the pizzas here are excellent. The menu is limited if you don't enjoy red meat.

Beware: the french onion soup is poor. You'll find it highlighted on the menu with bragging about the cheese and the special recipe, etc. I almost dare you to order it; mine had almost no cheese and the soup itself was weak and forgettable. I would have sent it back but I already had a few pints of beer and I was in a good mood.

We really enjoyed this restaurant. We came in on a saturday night and had to wait a bit, but it was well worth it. The host was very pleasant as was the rest of the staff. My entire party enjoyed their meals. We will be back!

If the Hi-Life wants it's customers to feel as though they are living the 'Hi-Life' then they need to replace their staff. At least that would be my first suggestion. The customer service, attention and friendliness were appalling for a place with such a name. While the Hi-Life's ambience and decor are a far cry from the original dark and loud Firehouse... it doesn't appear to have improved from my point of view!

The house infused cocktail options, while they try hard to make them unique, were too 'herb-ey' and I would rather baste my turkey with them than drink them in the future. The food was alright, but for the price and lack of service... I can find a zillion other restaurants in this city to spend my time and $$...

If the Hi-Life wants it's customers to feel as though they are living the 'Hi-Life' then they need to replace their staff. At least that would be my first suggestion. The customer service, attention and friendliness were appalling for a place with such a name. Pros: Good Summer Patio

Cons: Service, Staff

When we arrived, we waited for the hostess for several minutes. When she did arrive at the hostess station, she seemed clearly annoyed. She instructed me look in the bar myself to see if there were any open seats as she did not monitor that section when I asked if there was open seating in the bar section. Then she snapped at me and asked if I was going to decide because she wasn't going to stand up there forever. If you don't like working with the public, don't work in a customer service profession! It only got worse from there. The bartenders while nice seemed more interested in doing side work than pouring drinks. The waitress could barely be bothered to take our order once we were seated. The food was fair but when combined with the ambience of the restaurant, I would opt never to go there again.

First of all I am so bummed that this great venue has been taken over by this horrible restaurant.
The food is bland and so very over priced.
I wish they would move to Yakima.

I was looking forward to trying Hi-Life for breakfast. Sadly, my first experience was disappointing. The breakfast dishes sounded intriguing but were very bland. Our omelette, potatoes, pancakes, and biscuits and gravy lacked salt and flavor. We added our own salt to everything (including the pancakes -- it actually helped!).

Service was disorganized, as well. Seating responsibilities seemed to be shared by several people, with no one really in charge. When one server dropped and broke a bottle of ketchup, the mess sat there for a LONG time. He finally proceeded to slowly and painfully clean the mess up with the paper towels, while his tables sat unattended.

The ambiance didn't do much for us either. It seems like they're trying to be eclectic, but it comes across as formulaic and generic. Nothing cozy or cool or interesting in the decor.

Pros: Location

Cons: Bland food, Disorganized

We've eaten breakfast there three times, it ranges from pretty good to awful. The food was fine the first two times, but at our last visit, the coffee had been left on the burner too long and was bitter and dark, and my "blueberry" pancakes had about eight blueberries per pancake. I've had more plain pancakes with accidental blueberries in them! Our server was missing, but I finally flagged him down and showed it to him, and he said "oh, okay, well, I'll tell them" and ran off to get our check, but no apology or offer to make it right. They have great potential, they just need work on customer service a bit more.

Pros: charming decor, comfortable lounge, large restroom

Cons: hard seating, little street parking, small menu

I went with four friends, the service wasn't bad but it wasn't great, they got one of the orders wrong but took it back with no trouble. Unfortunately my spaghetti meat tasted like dog food! Worse than a schoolchild's cafeteria lunch. I will never ever go back there.

service at the hi life leaves much to be desired. i've been several times for their wonderful breakfasts. however i need to leave ample time for being served and then paying and exit. normally it's time prohibitive for me to eat there unless i can go in solo and eat at the bar.

Pros: breakfast, seafood

Cons: service, server attitude

The bar is cool and fun. They have a nice drink menu as well as a decent pour. Service has always been very good every time we've stopped in. We'd go back for dinner or lunch again, but skip happy hour food. We have never been happy with anything from the happy hour menu.

This was one of the most tastey brunches I've had in a long time. I ordered the Clean Up On Aisle 12 and my friend ordered the Ballard Market Rumble. Both of us couldn't stop praising how delicious they were - so much better than ordinary brunch fare. I can't wait to go back again to try out their dinner menu. The only negative was that it took a long time to get our check.

Went with a large group of girlfriends, hostess tried her best to accomodate us in a speedy manner. Restaurant housed in an old fire building, which provided some cool ambience. Food was seriously awesome--do the family style deal to maximize both amounts and variety of foods. We had drinks, a great meat dish, awesome pollenta, salad, and mashed potatoes (i know, we like the starches) as well as dessert (good Lord, have the sunday!) and desert drinks for about $35 a person. It was great to leave a restaurant feeling full and content but not overstuffed or overindulged.

I had the best breakfast today. I had a rumble, which is their scramble, and it was wonderful. The potatoes were to die for and the service was top notch. I can't wait to go back for happy hour! This place is going to be the place to go in Ballard within a couple months.

I don't think this place was ready to open. Incredibly bad service, food that is not memorable and the prices are too high for what you get. Just a bad design for the entire enterprise.

Loud, expensive, and beer that tastes like a dishwasher. Hmmm... Not so good. We got a glass of wine that was 1/3 full and $7. Great. Our burgers, ($9.50 ea.) were pink on one half and almost burnt on the other. Awesome. Our fries were limp and soggy. Fantastic. Absolute waste of time. Don't bother.
