Hall Health is an obvious choice for UW students on the Student Health Insurance Plan - it's in network, it's on campus, and there are many providers to choose from. You can get an appointment pretty quickly, and if your main physician is not available, usually you can be seen by another doctor because they share records.

A few things to keep in mind:

1) Appointments are either 20 minutes or 40 minutes. If you have several medical issues or something that you suspect will require a lengthy conversation or examination, be sure to ask for a 40 minute appointment.

2) If you cancel a 40 minute appointment less than 24 hours in advance, they will charge a cancellation fee (I believe it's around $25) regardless of the reason. They don't care if you are too sick to come in or if you got called in to work for an emergency on your day off. They might be nice and waive it the first time around, but after that they will charge you.

3) As is the case almost everywhere, the quality of service varies depending on the provider you happen to see. At Hall Health, some are OK, others are pretty bad. I have yet to meet an outstanding one.

In short, if you want to make the most of your student health insurance and do not want to go out of network, go to Hall Health. With so many physicians and NP's, you will probably find someone who's OK, although you may have to switch once or twice. However, if your budget allows you to go out of network, then do it - ask your friends and family for recommendations and find somebody who is really good. After all, your health is the most important thing you have, right?
