We began happy home in winter of 2012 when Ms. Tillman was wrapping up her reality TV show. I do recommend Happy Home as they are getting it together. There has been a high overturn of office staff and there still is no director but their booking lady seems to be there more often now and is good about getting an accounting out to parents periodically. When we started they checked kids at the door in and out but they don't really do that anymore. I don't mind that they do or don't honestly. Its my job to check my kid IMHO. I could not personally find any daycares that were legal and so curriculum oriented as Happy Home. They could still give us better notice on teacher in-service days and I think its silly that a daycare has more vacation days off than I do as a professional. I know those teachers need the money and we are already paying for it. Most of the teachers are educated and participate in some kind of teacher in service. They do have a generally minority staff but I find that they are all very loving and as they have worked to hire additional staff, I have met several on their working day (part of the interview) and my husband has personally let them know about several. My husband is a great advocate and is always talking to Ms. Tillman. She is very good about having the conversation, setting aside the time to do so and helping to find a solution. Our daughter's teachers are aware of where she is developmentally and they do provide activities that have helped her. I am not a fan of the uniforms myself, especially because whats the point if your teacher doesn't wear a uniform. They are sold from one of the most expensive stores in Alexandria! The bottom line is that since the reality show filming is over, Ms. Tillman has come back to the daycare full time to ensure that improvements are being made. Many staff members who were there have been replaced, and many policies and procedures are now being carried out that should have been all along. Communication between the teachers and parents has drastically improved. The center has been reorganized and things are much better than they were last winter.

Happy Home Child Learning Center has 3 locations: Duke St., Seminary Rd, and Woodbridge. This review is about the Duke St. location where my child is currently enrolled. Mrs. Tillman, the school's founder, is an expert at marketing the school, however, her follow-through on promises fails miserably. As of 1/23/12, the school has been without a Director, Asst. Director, and front desk receptionist for months, resulting in staff/school mismanagement. The part-time bookkeeper attends the door in the morning and teachers attend it in the evening. The heat was out on one side of the school a couple of weeks ago and parents weren't notified; teachers were reprimanded for "letting the word out." Kids were gathered in the heated multi-purpose room in a free for all when I picked my child up. HHCLC teachers are caring but not well educated and sometimes don't display basic common sense. My biggest complaint is the lack of communication between Mrs. Tillman/teachers and parents. There's not even a published school closing schedule for this year. While I can figure out when the federal holidays are, we have not been notified of teacher in-service days so we can plan accordingly. We'll likely get one week notice of a closure. Just last week, parents were asked to purchase uniforms after nothing became of our uniform orders from back in August, shortly before Mrs. Tillman left abruptly to do a reality TV show. I'm not happy about purchasing new uniforms near the end of the winter season, but talking with her is like banging my head against a wall, so I've decided not to say anything at all. The main reason is that I don't want any retaliation against my child in terms of meals, care, and general treatment. HHCLC handbook says each child will be inspected upon arrival but that NEVER happens. I've even had to request a copy of an incident report when my child got hurt at school because no one offered it. Think twice before you enroll your child, especially if she or he is 9-17 months old. The infant room is mostly out of ratio because the head teacher is playing Director, and the floor/toys are rarely cleaned. This location has no playground and is not in walking distance to a playground, only a park with no play equipment. There's a general sense of laziness, inconsistency, and apathy at this location.

This isn't a terrible day care. It's a nice place for the kids, but there are better and cheaper day cares out there. You do get the feeling that its all hugs and kisses until you have an issue with them. They constantly accuse people of not paying them without checking their records first. When things that belong to your child come up missing they write you off like it doesn't really matter. There is no play ground. So when the kids do go outside they are walking around the parking lot. It also appears as if the director loves a ghetto staff. If they aren't ghetto then they are quiet and controllable. The one lady I really liked was fired after only being there about a month or two. She was really a people person. The staff enjoys talking about people behind their back and lying about issues that they are aware of. If you like your sanity as a parent, I would not enroll my child there. If they give you the run around...I wonder what do they do to the children.

I definitely have a different experience than the previous two reviewers. My daughter has attended Happy Home Center #3 since she was 6 months old and she is going to be 2 in April. She is going to be in her 3rd classroom soon. Mrs. Tillman and the staff have always been respectful and pleasant every time I drop and pick my daughter up. When I did feel like I had an issue with something I brought it to the staff and director's attention and it was addressed. I'm a very observant and hands on parent and I would be the same way at any place or person who is around my child. I'm my child's advocate and I love Happy Home Child Learning Center and so does she.

I almost enrolled my son to HHC but I finally decided not to because of how rude, unprofessional and condescending the director Mrs Tillman was, and for no apparent reason. She probably just enjoys bullying people or has some kind of emotional challenge, but if that's the case I don't want her anywhere near my son. Don't be fooled by how pleasant she may seems on the first tour. Once she thinks that she has your business locked, you will be her next victim. She is just a thug with a cocktail dress.

I would best describe this as a ghetto shop run by a ghetto girl. Rationale:--Extremely poor customer service to the parents--Staff is rude and the Director is condescending--Teachers do not respect the children and speak to them as if they're second-class citizens--Teachers do not speak proper English (completely fail to follow basic rules of grammar) and thus set a bad example for the children--The curriculum is sadly lacking--Children w/ serious behavior and discipline problems are free to harm other children--No playground at all
