.

Great place, good music (some low-key jazz), dim mood lighting, very cool vibe inside. We sat outside in the heated outdoor room, which was nice, however a bit noisy being so close to the street...but for a February night, very comfortable.

For appetizers, we started off with the chips and salsa, which came artfully mixed in a bowl: half red salsa, half green. Very tasty! The chips were red, blue and yellow corn with deep-fried flour tortillas mixed in. We also had the panko-crusted calamari with avocado-chipotle dipping sauce. Honestly, the best calamari I've ever had; it was served on a bed of mixed greens with cucumber, tomato, carrot and capers and a mild dressing. Fantastic! Many of their ingredients are also locally grown, which is a definite plus. We were amazed at how much of everything there was -- portion sizes were very generous, and the calamari alone would have been more than sufficient for four people.

For dinner, my wife had the truffled mushroom tostada, which, like everything else, was plated with beautiful presentation. Blue corn tostada on the bottom and a huge pile of local mushrooms, sauteed to perfection and mixed with pico de gallo, lettuce, chevre and two "cremas" -- not sure what was in each, but one was spicy and green and the other was a light orange color and mild. I had the braised pork con queso, which was served with tomatoes, poblanos and mushrooms, and served over rice with a three-cheese mix and jalapeno crema. The pork was cooked to perfection, almost like pulled-pork barbecue. Absolutely delicious! (As with the appetizers, the entree portions were huge -- we'll be having leftovers for dinner tonight!)

The service was good, and they were very generous with the very cool Mono Loco stickers, available for free at the bar! Oh, and speaking of bar...Laura read in one of the local rags that they were known for their "legendary margaritas" so she ordered the Blue and Orange Margarita (in honor of UVA, no doubt) which was made with blood orange juice and blueberry puree. She really enjoyed it, and I had a couple of sips to confirm that it was, in fact, legendary. All around, it was a great experience and we'll definitely be back for more!
