Wow - we thought we made a great find - after all half my family is Thai. I've been eating Thai food for nearly 40 years and my younger daughter lived in Bangkok for her high school freshman year and now was starting at Virginia Tech. Perhaps we found a great place to enjoy Thai food when we'd visit her. Our first clue that we might be mistaken was when we went there for lunch today and asked if anyone spoke Thai - not a single person spoke Thai! The waitress said she learned how to say hello but had forgotten. Oh well, perhaps the food is good.

Well the best thing about the restaurant is that it can only improve. The food was the absolute worse pretense of Thai food we have ever eaten. The green curry (Jade curry beef) was essentially water with a little bit of green curry and maybe a teaspoon of coconut milk (which is supposed to be the base) with no vegetables (usually Thai eggplant) and about 8 rubbery pieces of beef floating around. The Pad Thai was a glob of greasy rice noodles made spicy with some sort of unidentifiable red liquid hot sauce (no Thai "prik" - red pepper was visible) plus it was so salty that it was inedible. The other two dishes (Chicken Rama, Simply Chicken Noodle Chicken) were equally horrible for various other reasons plus they were overly salted as well. In the end we felt that this restaurant does a disservice and even is an insult to Thai food.

When I asked one of the staff about the poor quality of the food the response was that the food served to us was normal and because the persone had never had Thai food before working in this restaurant thought that curry was supposed to be like water. The staff person also said that it would be no surprise to learn that the owners were cutting corners, like diluting the curry with water, because business was bad. The staff person even said that one of the chefs is from Cuba and he likes to make things hot with hot sauce as he doesn't know about Thai spices.

The only reason I can see to eat here is that every other Thai restaurant you will dine at will seem like gastronomical nirvana. For food and value, this place rate a -10 on a scale of 0 to 10.

Bottom line - horrible tasing food, small servings and high prices. Eat elsewhere

Pros: Friendly service

Cons: Horrible food

I have been to the Bangkok Cafe for lunch a few times, and the food has been fresh and delicious every time. The Thai Iced tea is a must-try. I haven't eaten dinner there, but definitely worth a lunch break.

This is a fun restaurant with great food. The waiter we've always had (who I think is the owner) is a hoot. He's helpful and funny. Sometimes the food takes a little while, but it is worth the wait.

I recommend the orangey cashew dinner, but everything there is pretty good.
