I have been going to Tom Papke (and Phyllis Fleetwood) at Capitol Metro Physical Therapy off and on since 2005 after having spent about 10-11 YEARS seeking help for what I thought was chronic hamstring pain that became acute shortly after running the Marine Corps Marathon in 1993. As it turned out, I had been mis-diagnosed by several MDs (Ortho and Physical Medicine) and Chiropractors over the years. Repeatedly I was told it was a high hamstring tear/pull at the top of my leg. All I knew was that if I tried to run more than a mile, the pain was incredible. I was actually referred to Tom Papke by an acupuncturist in Old Town Alexandria...because of her introducing me to Tom, my life was changed.

Tom Papke quickly diagnosed my issue as being in my lower back, sent me to Dr. Ben Kittredge (marathon runner) at Commonwealth Orthopedics to confirm his diagnosis and get a complete work-up with MRI, X-Ray,etc. and then Tom began treating my lower back.

In 2006, after months of being treated by Tom, I began running again (and couldn't run 1 mile around my neighborhood without stopping because I was so out of shape). But I continued, and Tom kept encouraging me ("You can do it...just build up slowly. Don't rush it.") As a result of Tom's efforts (and my training!) I completed the Marine Corps Marathon in 2009, ran additional races (inaugural Wilson Bridge Half Marathon and Army Ten Miler) in 2010 and had my best Half Marathon time ever in 2011.

Tom is not just a PT, he's able to look at the "big picture" -- he asks lots of questions and listens to the answers. It's clear that he's a guru. I've referred many people to Tom since 2005 (including my mother!) and they've all had great things to say. Phyllis is no different...she's also very knowledgable and can get right to the heart of the problem.
