Club Max

The first stop on my journey to validate the HoustonPress's new guide to dive bars in Houston was Club Max.

The press talked of snarling people outside and this and that... but it was nothing like that. The people there were far more intimidated by my arrival than I ever could have been by theirs. There was an older woman tending bar who seemed to be almost begging for a conversation and locals shouted across the room at eachother in friendly conversation. These weren't snarling locals, these were people in their 60s that, while they obviously hadn't lived the best lives, were still tamely behaved and not anywhere near causing any problems.

It felt like I was back in the 80s - I don't remember much of the 80s, but I can imagine it was something like that. The jukebox was real quiet... and they were listening to some really soft stuff until I polluted it with my music. All in all, there were a bunch of good old nondescript people just having a beer and waiting for the band to start.

And I will be back for the lingerie party on Wednesday.
