Coco??s sushi is my favorite sushi in Houston, if just for the tuna roll alone. ??Mami,? the owner always makes us feel welcome and remembers my husband and I, no matter how many months it??s been since our last visit. The dcor is an eclectic mish-mash of garage sale finds; with beaded curtains, an old Coca-Cola machine, various furniture, and a kiddie playground in the corner ?? all brought together by the dim lighting and club music. Yes, seriously.

To start, you are brought a small complimentary dish of edamame, and huge cups of ice water (I like always having water!). Whatever their house white wine is is always adequate for me, and my husband usually gets a Sapporo or whatever Japanese beer Mami recommends. But, oh the sushi!! The menu is small and only lists the sushi (although they do have many off-the-menu dishes and starters), and you mark your order on a paper list. The spicy tuna roll is my favorite spicy tuna anywhere. I??m not sure what they put in it ?? but it is uniquely different from any spicy tuna you??ve had before. There are several specialty rolls that are also really good (hard to remember the names without a menu in front of me!) ?? the one with the crunch topping is our fave. The sushi is always fresh-tasting, and comes out in no particular order, so it??s a good idea to want to share! Once you are finished, you will wait forever for your check, hopefully while sipping some complimentary sake. In keeping with the family atmosphere, I??ve seen Mami give out toys to kids dining there, she??s giving us a gift-wrapped bottle of sake, and a 20% coupon for next time. Overall - the sushi is good, the place is unique, and we always feel welcome there.

Pros: Great sushi, family-run, Mami

Cons: Service can be slow

I reserved my table the same day for my birthday party. I was expecting a table, but instead got a decorated with awesome fun stuff table that was in the middle of the action where I felt I should be on my special day. We drank like fish and ate like kings (NEW YORK ROLL) and then we closed it down with Karaoke, It was awesome. The service was 110% and the sushi was great as usual. They were accomadating and even helped us keep track of our items once we were a few sheets to the wind. This was by far one of the best venues for an intimate (and slightly wild) gathering with GREAT atmosphere. I cant say enough nice things.

Cons: Parking if I had to be picky.

I've been to Coco's a few times and every time I go in Coco has waited on me and my companion. She has an amazing personality and is very attentive when she needs to be and scarce when the time calls. It's a great date spot! The sushi is some of the best sushi I've ever had and I tend to be very critical with things like that. I recommend it to anyone who wants to know of a great sushi place.

I have been going to coco's for awhile now. I threw my friends birthday party there a couple of months ago and just reserved a table, but when I got there it was all decorated with party favors! The waitstaff and owner are always super nice and friendly. The New York roll is a cult favorite among our friends. I love this place and the location. The drinks are awesome also! Whenever I want sushi I go here!!!

First off, I'm not sure what people are saying about bad service. Would you really sit there for 15 minutes for a drink order? Most people are impatient and would speak up to receive service.

However, Coco's has great service from the moment you walk in. They greet you and let you sit wherever you would like. They have many traditional Japanese dishes (think snack sizes), especially the yakitori of course . "Coco" was there to interact with customers and the sushi men were friendly. Although they aren't the traditional Japanese sushi men, they prepared the food very well. All cooked foods came out fresh from the kitchen and sushi was made in front of you (if you sit at the sushi bar).

The staff also said they do karaoke at night time and there's a wii in there with rockband. Add that with good food and drink specials, you have the beginning of a fun night.

Pros: Good service, good traditional Japanese food (snack sizes), alcohol specials. Montrose area, close to nightlife spots. Huge parking lot at Hollywood video next door.

Cons: None. If you're going to eat Japanese food, don't be cheap. Not many entrees for the over eaters?

Where to begin...I was surprised that the location had changed. I've been living in Japan for some time and it's clear now why Coco's is a Houston landmark. It makes perfect sense. The family atmosphere, aesthetic, and food quality are all in step with the land of the rising sun. I felt like I had just been transported to a Tokyo side street. Friendly faces, reasonable prices and delicious cuisine make it a real treat. Although I must admit the sushi menu is far more creative and flavorful than the east will allow. If your looking for something more than a so-called Japanese restaurant then go for the real thing. A broad spectrum of top notch dishes. Take your time and savor the true feeling of Japan. Coco means (here) in Japanese and here is where it's at.

Understaffed. When we arrived we were shocked to discover that despite the fact that they knew a large party (21) was comming in, there only seemed to be one waitress working there.
Despite the fact that orders were all on the same ticket per table, they managed to leave out certain items (rather than getting the main meal we kept getting and having to return side dishes than we had allready gotten). After asking about a specific item, handing in a ticket for that item and waiting for her order, one of our party members was told (over 15 minutes later) that she would have to order something else since they couldn't make what she has chosen.
Taste-wise: All in all, the meal was not worth the wait. The rice bals were overseasoned and all I could taste was salt. The eel in the eel sushi was non-existant and could have passed for veggie sushi. To top things off there was no ginger or wasabi sauce.
The worst part was the fact that a party of over 7 (seated in a private area) that arrived at least an hour after we had ordered, managed to leave before all the members of our party had even finished getting their appetizers.
Hospitality:When some people at my table received their meal they decided to leave early. They asked the manager if they could get their ticket and she told them (with an attitude)that they would have to be patient because we were a large group. We explained that they had to leave and that they had ordered on a separate ticket from everyone else to make things easier and she said she was busy and they would have to wait. When someone else got their meal they eagerly commented "oh boy, I'm starved." Upon hearing this the manager said "Finally finally" mockingly and set it down.

By far the worst service I have ever had. We went with a going away party of about 10-12 people. Sat there for 3 hours and never even got our food. A small amount of people with our party did get something they ordered. But, who does that? They were bringing the sushi out one by one and even after 3 hours we still didn't get fed. My boyfriend and I ended up walking 3 blocks down to McDonalds. Which BTW we both despise McDonalds, we were desperate and it was the only thing open. I don't understand how they are still in business!?! AWFUL!

I went in and sat down at the "sushi bar" and someone came out and handed me a menu. After sitting for 15 minutes no one ever came back to actually take my order. I should have know this was not the place to go...there was absolutely no one else in the restaurant eating. I will never go back to coco's. I can't even write a review about the food since they didn't bother to come back to take my order. I left after 20 minutes (which is way longer then I should have waited) and went right down the street to another sushi bar. The other place sat me and took my order in under 5 minutes.
Don't go here. I can only imagine how terribly the sushi must be if the service is so aweful.

Great Ambience, Great place to just relax casually, and the owner greets and thanks every customer for coming by. This is not a usual sushi joint, but more of a place to call home. This restaurant is more of a Izakaya than a sushi place. Izakaya food is usually more substantial than tapas or mezze. Many items are designed to be shared.

Yakitori - grilled chicken skewers
Kushiyaki - grilled meat or vegetable skewers
Sashimi - slices of raw fish
Karaage - bite-sized fried chicken
Edamame - boiled and salted soybean pods
Tofu
Hiyayakko - chilled silken tofu with toppings
Agedashi tofu - deep fried tofu in broth
Tsukemono - pickles
Rice dishes such as ochazuke and noodle dishes such as yakisoba are sometimes eaten at the end to round off a drinking session.
This is truly japanese owned, not like RA or Oishii which is Korean run.

I actually to Coco's with a couple friends recently (Saturday night) around 6:30 pm. The sushi was average in comparison to other Houston sushi bars but I will say it had sushi that was slightly cheaper than other sushi restaurants. However, the service was horrible. There were 3 people total (including myself) in our group and it took close to 15 minutes just to get a drink order! The "sushi chef" or bartender as I like to say, was extremely unattentive and unknowledgeable about sushi. Houston customers avoid this place at all costs! Believe me it will be time and money you will never get back! If i had a recommendation I would choose RA or Cafe Japon.

Friends of mine and I met at Coco's last Friday. Initially, 2 of us were there, and there was only 1 person waiting on tables and she was not very attentive. There were probably not more than 5 people in the restaurant when we arrived around 6PM. Our table eventually grew to 6. The crowd markedly picked up at 7PM, and by 745PM, there was not a table to be had and most places at the bar were filled. Only 2 people were waiting tables in this entire restaurant, and there was a party of abt. 8 in the party room! The older woman quit coming to our table, and twice, she brought someone at our table the wrong cocktail. We kept having to flag the guy who was waiting tables down so we could order. Finally, we got tired of this and asked for our bill. Imagine our surprise when an adding machine tape arrived, which had no designations on what was food and what was alcohol.

The sushi was fresh and good but as another reviewer indicated, the service was so abysmal, particularly for a Houston restaurant, we won't be going back. No one ever came by to apologize or offer an explanation. There are too many OTHER great sushi restaurants in Houston to put up with this poor excuse for service.

Went to Coco's with a party of three for the first time about a month ago for lunch and absolutely loved it! The service was very fast, and it wasn't overly crowded. The sushi was the freshest I've tasted since Tokyo (the salmon nigiri just melts in your mouth, and for the price, it's a steal!), and the owner, as well as chefs, are actually from Japan, which you do not see a lot in Japanese restaurants in America. But what really made the experience awesome, apart from the absolutely delicious food, is the atmosphere. The owner, Takage, is so friendly, fun, and lively, and she insisted we call her "mom." =) She took great care of us, at the end bringing us a pretty sizable bottle of nice warm sake, on the house. I've been looking for a long time for a place with this quality of food and such a nice homey atmosphere and finally found it. Now, the other Japanese restaurants just don't compare....

Pros: food, atmosphere, owner

Cons: the building looks old on the outside, but nicely designed inside

Coco's used to be a favorite of mine when it came to sushi. The sushi is not bad and the atmosphere is interesting and friendly. Do not plan to be in and out with a party of more than 3. The service is very slow and in most cases, you don't get all of what you ordered either because they forget or you just get tired of waiting. For example, it took 2.5 hours to get some of our food and 2 people didn't even get thier orders. There is 1 sushi chef and maybe 2 waiters of the whole restaurant. If you have a lot of time for slightly above average sushi, this is your place.

I have been a regular of Coco's for about 5 years. They recently moved from their Richmond address to the 1000 block of Westheimer, near Montrose. The new restaurant is much larger but still has the same friendly atmosphere. The staff are great and always make you feel like one of the family. I love sushi and have tried just about every restaurant in town but I keep coming back to Coco's. You can count on consistent, high-quality fresh fish. For a real treat, order the Spider roll and ask for it "spicy." When you visit, make sure you say hello to "mom."
