My wife and decided to have a romantic date, so we added Bohanan's to our itinerary. We decided to first visit the bar downstairs. We were greeted right away by the host. She checked us in to our reservation. We had a few amazing drinks

I took an out of town guest in on a Thursday and hardly no one was there at 6pm and they could not believe or accept that someone could just show up for dinner without calling ahead..they could

Some of the food here is actually pretty good. If you don't mind being treated as a banjo player at an opera, this may be the place for you. My wife and I are native San Antonians, professionals, well-dressed, etc. We have eaten at Bohanan's a couple of times, and the service is uniformly awful. Most of us can understand a lapse in attention, which is what most bad service is, but at Bohanan's they also have that wonderful quality of service that informs you that the staff hasn't overlooked you; you're just not worthy of attention. Like I said, I think we're OK customers, just not good enough for Bohanan's. Thank goodness for tourists, because if there were no tourists in SA, this place would be a taco joint by now. A taco joint with better service, I daresay.

1/10/2009 My husband and I took another couple here for their Anniversary. None of us had ever been there but we were looking forward to a wonderful experience. When the waiter came to take our order, one of the 4 of us didn't order a salad. The waiter said, "Don't you want a salad? Everyone ELSE is having one." (I thought: What, is this guy a car salesman?!) That was my first clue as to what was to come. Our appetizer came out at the same time as our salads. He never brought the vegetable side dish one of us ordered. My steak was delivered without the special Prawn on the top that I had ordered. ("oh, I'm sorry that will be right out.") The Goat cheese mashed potatoes were brought to the table with no serving utensil. After waiting 15 minutes for the missing prawn, and never receiving the serving spoon for the mashed potatoes, I finally got up to find the manager. I saw our waiter and he said, "Oh, are you looking for your prawn?" I said, "I'm looking for my prawn, a spoon, and the manager". The manger came over and I told him about the vegetable, the serving spoon, the prawn. The potatoes were cold by now and I told him to forget the vegetable and prawn because we were all finished with our steaks. He was apologetic and said he'd speak to the server. The server later returned to our table and apologized and offered us free dessert. But he never brought a dessert menu! For a place of this caliber, I would never expect such horrible service. The result? All they did was take the prawn and potatoes off the bill. To top it all off, that night at 1am, my husband was sick in the bathroom for 3 hours! Needless to say, we will never go back.

Pros: Good food

Cons: Terrible service from our waiter

My wife and I visited San Antonio from Houston for a romantic weekend getaway. We had read about Bohanan's after it received 2nd place in the Texas Monthly Best Steakhouses issue. It did not disappoint. In fact, having been several times to the restaurant which was awarded 1st place, it was underrated by Texas Monthly. The candied jalapenos with cream cheese starter was excellent. We also had the Chateau Stack and Kurobuta steak. If you go, do not miss the French Grilled Oysters appetizer. They were the best. Chef Bohanan did visit our table and was gracious in describing the history of his restaurant, his plans for the future, as well as our common connections to Corpus Christi. However, the service from Jose, as head waiter, and Chris, who assisted, was impeccable. Regardless of how good the food was, the service we received was unparalleled. We now recommend Bohanan's to all of our friends, and gladly recommend it here. For us, it is the No. 1 steakhouse in Texas. For those who go, don't miss having dessert on the "secret" balcony (ask your waiter).

Went there with another couple. Had the best experience ever. Get the Akaushi Beef, it melts in your mouth. Expensive but worth the money. Wine, Steak, Dessert, everything was wonderful. Ask for Renee, she made the experience over the top!

I took a group of conference goers here after reading the review in Texas Monthly about Bohanan?s being the second best steakhouse in Texas. Across Houston St from the Majestic Theatre, it is a very nice downtown location. The night we ate there Paul Sorvino was also dining there. The wait staff is very efficient and friendly. The Bar pours perfect drinks; I had a Manhattan, straight up with KnobCreek Bourbon that was excellent. We were a party of 10, and the wait staff was always prompt and courteous with their attention. The explanation of the difference between the Akaushi beef and normal prime beef is very good as is the presentation. They made a point of telling us that the Akaushi beef grades at 3 grades higher than Prime. Our server also recommended the Ribeye cut of the Akaushi beef for its flavor. Their specials the night we ate were very good as most of us took the African Prawn along with our steak. I had their escargot appetizer, which was prepared in a cheese and garlic sauce and presented in an escargot dish. For our my entree I went with the Akaushi beef Ribeye, Pittsburgh style. I also ordered a special caprese salad made with Purple Cherokee heirloom tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella cheese, with a 12 year old aged Balsamic vinegar dressing. As an accompaniment to my steak I ordered the Sauteed Portobello Mushrooms in red wine sauce. I must say the salad was excellent as were the mushrooms. I was, however, disappointed in my steak. First it was a thin cut for a Ribeye, and while the chef prepared it perfectly Pittsburgh style, it didn't meet my taste or tenderness expectations. An associate ordered the Akaushi beef filet and let me try it. Friends that is the cut to get. It was fork tender and had a wonderful flavor. I will definitely go back, but will probably not shell out the $95.00 for the Akaushi beef. The wine list is awesome and the sommelier did great and lead me to a real nice 2002 Silver Oak cab sav.

My husband and I went there for our anniversary yesterday, and oh it was such a treat! I was sooo impressed with the friendly service and all the little things they paid attention to such as the wrapped lemon so that the seed doesn't get in the food and sorbet before the main meal to cleanse the palate. Since it was our anniversary, they gave us free champagin, which was nice! I would definitely go back again. Yes, it is very pricey, but for special occasions, it is worth it.

Great customer service and food. We were very impressed. We splurged and tried their specialty, Japanese Akaushi Steak. It had a different taste, but was delicious. Next visit we would probably just stick to their USDA bone-in steaks. They have more of a variety of side, salads, and just about everything than other steak houses. We tried the baked squash and it wasn't the best. There were more crackers than squash. But, we are looking forward to returning because there are so many items we would like to try.

It was our 5th year anniversary and it was an amazing experience. Our table was sprinkled with rose petals and we were greeted with glasses of champage to celebrate. To our suprise, we even had a special occasion discount on our ticket! This is really the best dining experience we've ever had.

Okay, so my husband and I had made reservations at The Lodge, another romantic place we had been a couple of years before and we were running late, so we weren't able to make them, so we had to find something fast to celebrate our anniversary. I googled restaurants on my cell phone and called out to my husband the names and Bohanan's was the first name to pop up on restaurants, and he said, "I've heard of that place and it's supposed to be one of the best steakhouses in San Antonio", so I said, sure so we called (of course this was on a Tuesday evening) but we were able to get a reservation 30 minutes in advance (enough time for us to drive there) and we were treated as though we were regulars and had made reservations weeks before. With just a little bit of inquiry they gathered that we were celebrating our anniversary and the maitre'd after putting rose petals on our table, handed my husband a rose to hand to me - what a nice gesture. Mind you, I know my husband had nothing to do with it, since we had just made the reservation minutes before. Further, the wine was excellent and the steaks were outstanding (we have eaten at most of the nicer steakhouses in San Antonio, and this by far was the best). To top it all off, on our dessert plate, the chef personally wrote "happy anniversary" on it - I have never been treated like that before, very unexpected for an unplanned evening. Service was excellent - not too long, not too short and the ambience was definitely what we needed to celebrate our special day. And the best part was that we didn't even ask for special service on our day, it was I guess just part of their service - definitely a plus!!

With reservations, once we were seated it took 45 minutes to get salad. The steaks were prime and very tender however the steaks had way too much soy sauce, it ruined the natural flavor of the steaks. It should be noted that Mark only needs to use some sea salt, pepper and olive oil.

Typical steak house fare and they are not making a special effort for the prices they get. If you want to charge upper stratosphere prices then you should at least make an effort at being unique and top notch. You can't simply do what all the other steak houses do. Who needs another Mortons or Ruth's Chris?

This downtown San Antonio Steak House is easily one of the best steak houses I have been to.

The steaks are thick cut prime beef where the taste of the beef comes through. They don't dress it up all cajun flavor or mexican spice junk like Chili's or Applebee's. The french grilled oysters they call a house specialty are as good as advertised. I sincerely recommend that you order these oysters as an appetizer because I promise you won't be dissapointed.

The service is almost unnecessarily good. Every waiter and waitress are as polite and knowledgable as can be and cater to every want. The wine steward will recommend great wines without making you spend hundreds of dollars on something you don't need or have never heard of.

The prices are a little pricey but you get what you pay for. I think our meals are usually about $40 a plate with drinks but $40 is well worth it.

If you are an out of towner or simply someone looking for a nice taste of San Antonio this is the place to be. The owner is the chef not some corporation in Los Angeles. So you know you'll get the best. This is better than Ruth Chris.

Pros: Service, Valet Parking, Cuts of Beef, french grilled oysters, romantic dining, wine selection, downtown locale, dessert

Cons: slow seating, reservations probably needed, not necessarily for kids, dress code

Ok, the wife and I we went to Bohanan's in San Antonio on our anniversary. The place is definitely overrated!!! The service was pretentious and I had to wait over 30 minutes with a reservation before we were seated. The food was not what I would be expecting from such a place. The appetizer (Coconut Fried Shrimp) was mediocre. The main dish (Veal Tenderloin) was NOT good at all. It came out cold. In addition, the Baked Squash and rice were heavily OVERSALTED. It was NOT an enjoyable experience. As a place to have an EXPENSIVE business dinner it's Ok, but as a Gourmet place, it was a disaster. Total damage (including tip and drinks) for two of us was $140.00. For that price, I expect better. A lot better. I won't be dining at this establishment again.

This is in response to the posting in August concering PR Chef /Owner. I am sorry that you found it offensive that a chef / owner takes the time to go out into HIS restaurant to talk to his customers and make them feel welcomed, which is something you would never find in a chain. I have been to Bohanan's several times since he opened in 2002 and I have requested that he come out and talk to my husband and myself and throughly enjoy talking to him and never pervcieved the converstation as a PR plug. I really don't think that he has to convince folks that he is "good" when his reputation speaks for itself with getting the 4 diamond award every year since he has been opened and the Wine Spectator Award. Most folks consider it a compliment of someone of his position to speak to them warmly. Perhaps you were a little jealous and it seems pretty petty to let his conversation ruin such an important occasion as yours with your wife.

Pros: All steaks are Prime Steaks with no end pieces and the seafood is creatively done

Cons: I can't go more often

After Bohanans was recommended by a colleague, I gave it a try as I took my wife for our anniversary dinner this past weekend. We had a reservation and to my surprise from being on time, we were asked to have a seat. There were no persons waiting and the restaurant seemed to be less than a quarter full. We sat down on a couch only to speak a few words before we were seated. It was a very nice, romantic setting. The second half of our visit was literally ruined by the owner/chef standing besides and speaking to a local tv anchor woman (name I will not reveal)and her date for the last 20 minutes of our stay while they sat at a tabled besides ours. He was less than 6 feet away from my wife and was definitely giving a PR pitch as we could hear the conversation. Thanks for the bad ending to what would have been a superb visit!

We came here not knowing what to expect and came away so pleased. The staff were great and helped us make decisions. It was unhurried and very great service. The food was terrific. We had a Choice of bottled water or tap. The drinks were good at a good price. It was a very nice evening and most people looked like they enjoyed it too.

Made a reservation for a special table at 5:30PM. We arrived on time and greeted with "do you have a reservation". The hostess took us directly a table not per our reservation request. Our waitress finally checked and found our table was prepared. So after standing around in an empty restrurant we were taken to our corner table by the windows. Perfect! The worst is yet to come. The main course was very disappointing being served cold and way below par for this supposed level of restaurant. The deserts were Worst! Then upon leaving we fumbled around looking for the exit while 5-6 on-looking staff and management whom were by the exit and did not assist nor speak a courteous enticement to return. As another reviewer wrote, "second class citizens"; we get better treatment at Wal-Mart. It's really too bad!

After reading the almost "personal" slam by Allyn I felt the need to set the record straight. I have held Banquents at Bohanan's and have personally dined over "twelve" times since they opened. On "NO" occasion have my guests or I dealt with anything but perfection, or at least as close to itas possible. Sophisticated, elegant, beautiful..YES, snooty...NOT!!! P.S. at least Allyn liked the food.

After seeing a play at the Majestic, we walked across the street hoping for a wonderful dinner here. With many empty tables and no reservation we were told that we "would be seated THIS time".
Bottled water was served to all 4 of us, 2nd bottle brought later with unknown charge of $6/bottle.
Waiter was very condescending, implied that we should have ordered 1st course because it "takes 30 minutes to prepare your order" but he'd see if the chef could make it faster (did not happen). Waiter never checked to see if our meals were satisfactory, never brought bread/rolls to the table,
and made us feel like 2nd class citizens. This marred our evening, we will not return and not recommend it to anyone else.

Right across the street from the Majestic, right next door to The Palm, Bohanan's now has valet parking, a huge comfort. The room is gorgeous...one of the best in SA.
When it is offered, start off with the generous fois gras - remarkable. The seared tuna was good, as well. Seared scallops were perfect. The steaks are flavorful, but have been a bit over done on numerous occassions. The service gets better and better, but it is still not in the stride it needs to be in this caliber of restaurant. All in all, a great place for special occasions or a weekly meal.

Pros: Seafood, Steaks

Cons: Service

.

Since there is no perfect steak, I had to settle for close to perfect. The overall ambience of the location combined with quality service, food, and unhurried atmospher made for a wonderful evening. A refreshing local alternative to the high-dollar "chain" restaurants that really don't have local ties. Although comparable in price to the upscale chain steakhouses, the difference is the more personal touch that Mark Bohanan brings. Definitely a place for that special meal with that special someone or group.
