The Scene
An elegant, well-appointed room masks its skinny dimensions by creating coziness without suffocation. Flattering lighting and a heaping portion of dog art keep things fashionable and quirky. Bistro-size tables generate intimacy. The building also houses sister businesses: the swanky State & Allen Lounge, which leans toward pizza and swizzle drinks, and Allen Street Market, which offers deli food.

The Food
New American cuisine conforms to a tight, yet varied, menu. Soups include a delectable and smooth Indian corn concoction with a dollop of spicy poblano cream. A pear and rutabaga puree appeals to the adventurous. The heirloom tomato salad boasts a hefty helping of blue cheese. Seared halibut marries well with crisp, smoky eggplant. Pork loin borrows nicely from Moroccan, Mexican and Italian traditions, featuring a berber cauliflower and potato ragout and a spicy poblano pesto.

Key Points

  • Daily Happy Hour
  • Extensive Wine List
  • Indoor and Outdoor Seating

The Inside Scoop

  1. Save Time - No time to shop for groceries after dinner? Head over to the deli and pick up provisions there.
  2. Know Before You Go - Taste is brought to you by the same folks who created Legal Grounds and Savory in Lakewood. If the place is booked, head uptown for a similar urban-bistro experience.
  3. Look Good - The entrance isn't obvious. Taste is inside, one door down from the bar, which is what you'll see from the corner of State and Allen (hence the name).

Casual and Relaxed

by BuddyD

This is a favorite spot of mine as a former Uptown dweller. Great spot for watching the game while scarfing down fantastic pizza. The waitstaff is always accomodating and the outdoor patio scene is fantastic for great people watching. I gaurantee you will see someone walk by that is worth checking out.

Pros: Location, Price, Service, Outdoor Seating

Cons: Crowded

Recession-friendly menu lets you enjoy the good life....

by lancedesdieux

On Monday, you can order half-price gourmet pizzas. Tuesdays are my favorite: a barbecue pulled pork chopped salad (WITH a drink) for only $7.95. And every other night of the week they offer a meal with a drink for under 8 bucks as well, whether it's fish tacos or a pasta bowl or fish 'n' chips with spicy coleslaw. I'm hard pressed to find a better deal in Uptown, never mind a homemade meal with such high-quality ingredients. Their service is great too! Can't recommend highly enough.

Pros: daily specials, attentive & friendly service, great burgers

Great people watching, great salads, great cocktails

by stepharper

Now that spring has sprung you can find me at State & Allen twice a week, ordering a Silver Bowl Salad and sipping the martini of the week. As for the Silver Bowl, it's got chopped romaine lettuce with grapes, bacon, mandarin oranges, and a spicy chicken that is the end-all, be-all of chicken. I don't know what they do to it, but it is what all chickens aspire to. Their dessert menu is fab too: try the Margarita Cheesecake with the fleur de sel. It's TLE... that's The Living End for the uninitiated.

Add that to your chance to spot some a medley of passersby that includes cutiepie dogs, 'interesting' fashion choices, and droolworthy fellas, you've got a winning combination.

Pros: patio dining, martini-of-the-week, their pastry chef

Try the pizza at State & Allen!

by hbrandt

I just had their Sausage and Sauteed Pepper pizza for lunch and it was incredible, the best pizza I've had here in Dallas... they use sausage from Jimmy's Italian Grocery, which I can't resist. I had a hard time choosing between that and the Wild Mushroom Pizza, with garlic butter sauce and gouda cheese. My girlfriend chose the cream of tomato soup, with a cute and unexpected twist: it had little grilled cheese sandwiches as 'croutons.'

It's an American casual restaurant, but you can tell the chefs keep up with the trends and are passionate about the important things in life, i.e., WINE AND CHEESE. I'll definitely be coming back, perhaps for their wine dinner.

Pros: casual ambience, heated and enclosed patio

Great service and atmosphere - cool eclectic style.

Food is amazing - try the silver bowl salad or the ribs when available.
