Chef Kaiser creates some of the most unique Indian/Pakistani dishes with surprising combinations that tickle every one of your different taste buds. The generous portions make the already affordable restaurant even more budget-friendly.

The worst restaurant I have ever been too. Some of the key points:\r
- served lamb when we ordered chicken\r
- the waiter banged the plates on the table instead of laying them properly\r

Best Goat I have ever had. All the food is excellent. Atmosphere needs improvement, but staff and owner are always friendly. Prices can be high unless you order the lunch special. I always have a meal there when in Houston

Very good food and service. Had the Fish Curry and really enjoyed it. My friend had the Lamb Seekh Kabab and thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I really liked this restaurant and would recommend it to anyone.

The food at Himalaya is average for Indian cuisine compared with other similar restaurants in the Houston area and overpriced for the quality. Leftover menu items prepared for lunch are served again for dinner, albeit much drier and less appealing for the wear.

There is absolutely no ambience. The owner (chef Kaiser Lashkari) has his cluttered desk placed prominently within the dining area where employees take turns reclining in a chair while rubbing their eyes and faces.

Worse, the proprietor can be a real jerk as was the case during our visit with several guests.

There is constant grinding chaos in this restaurant. Service is slow and inadequate. It was an effort obtaining basics such as silverware and napkins. Two of us never received requested glasses for our beer brought in deference to the restaurant's BYOB policy.

Dealing with the proprietor was akin to haggling with a used car salesmen. The proprietor attempted to increase his profit margin by aggressively suggesting additional food items and by substituting complimentary naan bread which accompanies many of the entrees with garlic naan bread at an undisclosed additional cost. This and other costs were not shared with patrons until a careful examination of the meal's bill revealed problems.

The final bill was not itemized consisting only of a confusing jumble of numbers and letters in place of food and drink items thereby making it impossible to determine how much each person owed for their portion of the meal.

The owner was reluctant to disclose how the bill was calculated. We ended by paying what the owner described as being due for each diner. However, it was apparent that the amounts quoted were far in excess of the actual cost of the food ordered by each person.
Worse, an inexplicable "service charge" was added to each person's bill which further inflating each diner's final cost.

Unfortunately, our dining experience became substantially worse.

While paying at the front counter, the owner unexpectedly began loudly screaming at one of our female guests who was in the process of paying for her meal.

The owner claimed that she was insulting the waiter by her decision to tip only 15% rather than a 20% tip then demanded by the owner. The owner continued to angrily insist on a 20% tip per person in spite of there being only four individuals in our small party. According to the printed menu, only parties of 6 or more pay a mandatory 20% gratuity.

The poor woman attempted to calmly explain to the owner that her order was not correct, that she never received her complimentary naan bread after several requests, and several other small issues that contributed to her decision to tip (in my opinion based on the poor service a generous) 15%. The owner continued to shout angrily at the woman, preventing her from expressing her concerns. The owner directed so much abuse at the poor female patron in the open dining area that I was forced to intervene on behalf of our guest.

We discovered the next day that the owner had also surreptitiously added an extra $1 to our already 20% tip without disclosing his actions to us. He added the extra amount when processing our credit card at the counter. We discovered the discrepancy when we compared our receipt with the listed charge for our meal on our credit card statement.

Due to the extremely ugly abuse directed at our female guest by the owner (and our party in general) and the outright dishonesty pertaining to the bill, tip and credit card charge we will never return and recommend that others with any self-esteem consider dining elsewhere as well.

Better Indian food at more reasonable prices accompanied by a more genial ambience can be found at too many other Indian restaurants making it unnecessary to tolerate the abuse and dishonesty of the owner of this particular dining establishment.

The previous reviewers were being kind. One was charged $5 to use the bathroom? Ha! I was charged $10. And to make matters worse, the owner followed me into the bathroom and cleaned the toilet by hand while I was washing up afterward. To make matters worse, he proceeded directly to the kitchen where I spied him preparing a meal for a young couple on their honeymoon - with unwashed hands!.
I came to Himalaya with my heart set on Chicken Tikka, but the owner, after insulting my wife, bullied me into ordering the goat biryani. Boy, was it good...

always cheats with the bills, big liar, dont have manners, one should make sure how the bill is before paying the bill. I have seen many other customers complaining over charging taken 15% over the bill. I ordered for a la carte item and the owner said the nan (bread) comes free with this, but later he charged for that that. the owner and service sucks a big time. The owner doesnt have any manners and he always forced customers to order more than required.

Went to dine in Saturday night with the family - what a mistake! No seating assignment, No time limit, people are coming in and standing everywhere, the owner is running aroung like "chicken w head cut off". People complainting about length of time it takes for food to get on the table, rude owner and his son is lost as well. Another family complaint about food being late and got rude comments from the owner in front of everyone. This particular family had a new born so they finaly left, the owner ran after them and started to argue in the parking lot about them leaving!

What a chaos - just like Pakistan. Won't survive and will close soon.

Do not go there!!!

Cons: full house, 1 waiter. that dude works fast though.

Sampled a few dishes here after hearing about their excellent Indian food. I love Indian food but don't get enough opportunities to eat it. I went on the suggestion of the staff, the Goat Biryani and fried pastries with spicy sauces...delicious! A hidden treasure of a restaurant in sharpstown!

This is one of those places that when you walk in, you know you are in for a treat. You don't come for the atmosphere, but some of the finest, most innovative Indian (and sometimes "Indian-ish") food around.

Cons: Can be slow, and you get dishes as they are ready

The steak tika was TO DIE FOR!!! Also the chicken tikka masala and eggplant were both great dishes! The garlic naan was sooooo good!
Had no negative experiences with the owner-like other posts-in fact he was very friendly with my spouse.

I have been to this restaurant several times before and I must admit that the food has been good in the past. However, the past couple of time I visited, the waiters seem to have taken on the traits of the owner of the restaurant. The waiters together with the owner of the restaurant are overly keen to give you recommendations and almost force you to eat what they recommend. It is almost like having food shoved down your throat. I find this behavior very inappropriate. In addition, they try to feign friendliness in order to get you to order what they "think" you should be eating. I was recommended to try the goat biryani which is good no doubt. But since I am no stranger to goat biryani, I decided on the goat masala. The waiter took my order while belittling me saying "as you wish"! The meal was passable - too much spice for the sake of spice, too much oily curry for the sake of oily curry and very little goat which was chewy.

Also, be wary of flashing even a dollar bill at the restaurant owner. I keep some cash with me at all times but it's usually for emergencies. If the restaurant or store that I visit accepts credit cards, I prefer to use it. However, on one occasion the owner saw some cash in my wallet and gave me a little bit of his emotional blackmail saying it was the week he needed to pay his waiters and could use the cash.

The owner (Kaiser) was rude, obnoxious, intrusive and bossy. He basically demanded that our party of 4 order 4 dishes, or we would be taking up "too many spots for the amount we ordered". This is idiotic, since there are 4 seats to most every table there -- so even if I had been by myself, would I have had to order 4 dishes to make it worth his while?

This bozo has no business being a restaurant owner. I recommend people boycott them and go to London Sizzler or Sabri Nihari instead for quality service.

My family and I had the horrible experience at this restaurant due to the owner. First, he does not have any host/hostess to sit you down, so we decided to sit ourselves down to a table that fits our family and finally after such a long wait the owner comes over to our table, and instead of taking order, he tells us to move to a different table because he is expecting a bigger party to arrive. WHAT SORT OF SENSE DOES THAT MAKE! we arrived there first, we have been waiting there, but just because you have a bigger group coming and you are going to make more money off of them, you move your guest. That was very rude and ill mannered. So to top-it-off, he moves us down to one single table with two chairs stuck on each side (how uncomfortable!)

Second, since he doesn't have printed menus you have to keep going to the counter to see what he has to offer with so many people trying to read the menu already, then someone comes to the table to get the order. (Does not make sense)

Third, worst indian food I have had in Houston, and moreover it is not even fresh. A very poor quality of food for the premium he is charging. Basically, he is ripping you off, and he bills you for a service charge!!! (what the heck!) He didn't give us a decent place to sit, our order and food came so late. most of our order didn't even come together, but in long intervals.

Don't try this restaurant and especially for any family occasion. I would not even recommend this just for kicks.

I have been coming here at least once a month for the past two years, and I strongly disagree with the other reviewers! Not only is this the best Pakistani food ever, the owner treats me like a princess when I walk through the door!! He is not only friendly, he also gives me at least one complimentary item to try almost every time!

The food is amazing! I have tried many things there and have never been disappointed. I bring all of my friends here and they all come regularly as well! I highly recommend the chicken boti kabob, any of the curries, any masala, and the garlic naan. Their almond custard and mango lassi are delicious also.

The ambiance is better now that it is painted, but don't expect anything fancy. This is your hole in the wall gem. The owner is great with his customers, but most of the wait staff don't speak English so don't expect a lot from them, but they're still friendly.

Let me start of with the good part. This place serves the best biriyani and best lamb curry I have ever had in Houston. Excellent tasty food. It is slightly oily though. I will continue to visit this place for my biriyani and curry needs. The biriyani was cooked to perfection and the lamb curry was soft with the right consistency and taste.

The bad part. Everytime I go there, the ower is either arguing with a customer or shouting at his cooks in the kitchen (he is so loud that you can hear him thorugh the closed doors). There is absolutely no ambience whatsoever here. You are better off ordering "to go".

I think the owner has got this attitude that, since he makes the best biriyani in town, he can behave anyway he wants. He needs to get over this and be polite to his customers and more importantly, his cook(s). He also tries to force you to order certain items in place of what you have in mind (beware).

Approach him like you would approach the Soup Nezi (The word filter is not allowing me to enter this word)
The only reason I am giving three stars is because of the owner temper (otherwise I would have given a five star)

Pros: Excellent authentic food

Cons: Angry owner

Went to Himalaya with nine people for my wife's birthday last night as we have eaten there in the past. The food is exceptional. We especially like the Chicken Biryani, and the Lamb Shank Curry. The Chicken Tikka Masala is also incredible. We have truly always enjoyed the personal yet informal service that the owner provides. I disagree with the comments of prior reviewers and will definitely return to this exceptional restaurant. The owner takes pride in the food and is always willing to make recommendations. It is unfortunate that some people take recommendations as offensive. The ambience is perfect in this restaurant, not opulent but authentic and even comfortably campy. The no corkage fee BYOB policy is also fantastic although that means drinking wine out of styrofoam. But it kind of adds to the charm. Thanks so much for a great birthday celebration!

Pros: Quality and spice of the food. Creative menu. No corkage fee BYOB

Cons: Informal and somewhat campy ambience but no big deal if you expect it.

Houston has several Indian and Pakistani restaurants. Service is usually not their strongest point.

I went to this place, based on a review in Houston Press, a usually reliable source. NOT THIS TIME!!!

The owner of Himalaya is the rudest, most unpleasant, unprofessional restaurant owner I have ever met. I was there with my friend a while ago and he started asking us personal questions. One night when we went there he basically forced to order more than we wanted to eat. He tried to embarrass us into ordering extra.

I don't know how people think this guy is charming. The food is not worth the downright insulting customer service. I don't know where the owner gets this attitude from, Houston has plenty of other good restaurants, so there is no real need to come to this place.

Anyway, we got up and left, I have never done this before in my life. I seriously encourage you to look elsewhere.

Pros: Average Food

Cons: Service, hygiene, ambience

I strongly DO NOT recommend this place as first, there is no ambience at all!!! Secondly, the owner is a mean person and do not treat customers well. He persuades you into buying at least 3-4 dishes even if you are not willing to. There is no printed menu card. The owner is very rude and absolutely not clean. When I was visiting this restaurant last time, he was itching in his pants at the counter. While I was waiting there for my food to take it to go, his employee came out of the kitchen and put 2 nans on the counter (to serve some other customer who was on the table) and the owner touched those nans without even washing his hands. Looking at that, I didnt feel like eating food from that place and I tried to cancel the order. But he started arguing about the issue and asked me to pay even though i was not really willing to take food from him. He doesnt have manners to talk to customers and claims that food is good. Evenif the food is okay, WILL ANYBODY LIKE TO EAT FROM SUCH UNCLEAN HANDS??? One could imagine where
else he puts his hands and serves his customers. Yukkkkkkk !

Pros: Convenient Location

Cons: Cleanliness, Ambience, Service, Food Quality

Okay this place has one of the most candid owner I've ever seen. Very down to earth and welcoming guy. The restaurant is not that well decorated but if its for the food you wanna go for you will like it. I tried the Biriyani, Mango Lassi and Ras Malai (Sweets) here and all of them would get a 9/10. The service is pretty quick so there is barely any wait time as well. Food is probably not the cheapest but not that expensive either. Anyone who wants to spend money for a decent Indian/Paki/Bangladeshi lunch can come here with confidence. You should not be dissapointed. My gf recommended me to go there since I don't live in Houston and since I had nothing better to do after she left I decided to go check it out. To be honest, I did not regret the service and food I got. Maybe the restaurant could be more organized in terms of including silvermare and napkins when people carry out. That's one thing they could improve upon. But other than that food was really good.

Normally when I visit this area of Hillcroft, I go to Udipe's cafe, for a good dosa, but since I went to the Himalaya, I can't get enough of the place. The food is cooked to order, the naan is perfect, the portions are more than ample, the biryani's are awsome in both taste and price.

The owner and his wife run the place with a family type of love rather than a business, something sadly lacking in many restaurants today.

In short, great food at a very good price.

Cons: None, although they copuld do a bit of advertising.

In contrast to the prior review regarding the customer service, I feel that the service at Himalaya is excellent. The owner is extremely kind, warm, and helpful in selecting a dish from the varied Indo-Pak menu. The goat biryani is absolutely fabulous, and ranks amongst the best i have had in my life, perhaps even better than my Mom's. :P The meat is fall-off-the-bone tender and the rice is brightly accentuated with hints of saffron. I would highly recommend that you try this the first time you visit. The portions are huge and the dish easily feeds a family of 3-4! On my second visit I had the Handi Chicken which was also a delight. The food is cooked fresh to order and results in a longer than expected wait, but well worth the anticipation. Also, the food is authentic and not toned down for American palettes as one usually gets at other Indian restaurants.

This restaurant charged me $5 for using their restroom to wash my hands. My friend and I walked into the restaurant thinking it is an indian fast food place. While my friend was looking at the menu I went to wash my hands, but when I got back, my friend told me this was not a fast food place se we decided to leave. As we were exiting the restaurant, a restaurant employee stopped me and asked me pay $5 for using the restroom. Even though I tried to explain him that I only washed my hands and that we were specifically looking for "fast food", he did not care and I had to pay.

I got the Vegetarian Biriyani even though it wasn't on the menu. It was the vegetarian special of the day. The serving for that was huge. THe others at the table got curries and naan, which wasn't a big portion when looking at it, but I heard it was amazing (the naan too). Everyone cleared their plates. I'd never been here before, but I would recommend it.

The Hillcroft area is nose-to-nose Indian restaurants, but this Pakistani spot in particular has long been singled out by Houston foodies and eternally positive word of mouth. Its popularity means that diners often linger on the sidelines…
