I have been here numerous times, mostly after Sunday services and I am always impressed with this restaurant that serves dim sum all day. After learning what dim sum was on my trip to San Francisco, I returned to Houston to find this quaint little restaurant that only holds about 20 people. I was pleasantly surprised by the food and their wide selection despite their small size. I think that the most wonderful part of this restaurant is the pictures of the food in their flip book menu to help you not only decide on what you want to eat, but to help you remember what you have eaten before. The one of the only downsides to this restaurant is the lack of parking. The other is that it is sometimes the waiting time for tables to open up can be extensive.

I have to disagree with some of the negative comments on here. I've tried dim sum at various places around town but Yum Yum Cha is definitely a family favorite and we've been going here for years. We've never experienced bad or rude service and we are Asian so I find it completely ignorant that someone would insinuate that race would be a reason for rudeness.

The staff is small but they go out of their way. The food is really delicious and consistently so.

Our favorites include: Shrimp and Chive cake, Shrimp stuffed eggplant and Chrysanthemum tea!

Great Dim Sum! Always fresh as you order from a picture menu. Small local business with faithful clientele. Atmosphere is nothing special but the place is clean as a whistle. You need to try one of everything at this place!

I hosted a family meal on Sunday afternoon, 3/29/2009 at this quaint establishment. One of our orders was for the pork and peanut dumplings, a highly regarded item per numerous reviews. My daughter ate her's then alerted me to a maggot (yes, a fly's immature larva) that was on her plate.

I notified the front of the house staff, received a week excuse that this was instead a caterpillar (this was better?), but my years in law enforcement qualifies me to know the difference. We were given the opportunity to leave without a check.

I notified the City and a quick inspection this morning, 3/30, turned up minor violations, which could be expected due to horrific nature of the Sunday experience. I leave it to your imagination where offending foodstuff went before the inspector arrived.

Just a note. Our family traveled China extensively in 2007, never experiencing a problem with food handling, preparation or safety. It is sad that we discover that Houston fell flat on it's face at the heart of such a vibrant area of our community.

Did this place switch owners? I have not been in a while but wanted to treat some friends to dim sum. The five of us walked in and I immediately see four empty tables and one guy sitting at a table for six. Well, the owner refused to put two tables together. We offered to sit at a table for four but were refused. The waitress said that was the owner's orders but said she can take our names and give us a call when a table opens up. Needless to say, we left and none of us will ever return again.

Pros: Used to be a great place

Cons: Service - wish I can give it zero stars

The location is great since it's not in the traffic mess of most Dim Sum places. There's normally no crowds. We had three bad experiences before we just had enough. All three were hair incidents. One was a short black hair in the cup of soda. A sip hadn't even been taken and the waitress gave us a dirty look. Then we found hair in our shu mai. And the last time they were so rude to us when we walked in, probably because we pointed out the previous hair incidents, we just left. It would have been awesome to have a dim sum place in Rice Village but the food isn't good enough to keep patronizing such rude people and mediocre food hygiene.

When I stepped into this Rice Village hole in the wall, I had some trepidation that I had stumbled on a place that serves dumbed-down dim sum for the uninitiated. Boy, was I wrong about that. My friends and I ordered a table full of food, and there was NOTHING on the table that I didn't like. The almond rice cakes were light and fluffy. The turnip cakes actually had flavor and tasted like (gasp) turnip! Everywhere else I've had these, they tasted like bland taro root. The egg custard tarts had a bit of crispiness to the outsides that was a very nice compliment to the creamy, sweet, eggy filing.

Service was not great, but not bad either. Prices were extremely reasonable.

We WILL be going back.

The staff and who I think is the owner (the tired-looking lady who never smiles) are extremely, painfully rude! I've been here several times and I've learned that the staff is not the friendliest, but I've just accepted it because of my craving for dim sum. This past experience, however, was the worst- enough to never eat there again no matter how desperate my craving for dim sum is. The staff seemed to be decently friendly to the other patrons, but for our table (maybe because we are Asian...?) the staff would roll their eyes whenever we asked for more hot oil or some other hot sauce! They would obviously ROLL their EYES!!! We tried to be polite, thanking them whenever they served us, but their cold hearts would just reject it. I guess the restaurant just makes too much money and wants to slow down the business. We've never received four-star service to begin with, but this was the final straw. NEVER AGAIN! The food is average... but not tasty enough to trump the horrific service the restaurant provides. All my friends and I will now boycott this hell hole of a place.

Cons: service, food, ambience- everything!

I tried this place on a Friday afternoon for lunch. They have a little flipbook with all the dim sum choices and photos. Really helpful if you're a first-timer. I must say, the portions and sizes of the dim sum pieces are quite small for the price in comparison to what you get at Ocean Palace or Kim Son. You can definitely count on this place to satisfy your dim sum craving if you are too lazy to make it out to Bellaire or you want it on a weekday. Otherwise, it's much more worth it to endure the hustle and bustle of chinetown for the real deal.

I absolutely love this place. I have eaten there MANY times. Their food is always hot and cooked to perfection. My daughter and I frequent the place so often that the staff knows us. I have been out of town for some time now and I can truly say that I really miss this restaurant. I have not been able to find another dim sum place like it. The owner and staff are so personable. My favorite dishes are: Turnip Cakes, Shrimp Eggplant, Chicken Feet, Fried Shrimp Dumpling/Balls, Ginger Tripe and Vegetables. I can't wait until my next visit!!!!!!!

I love dim sum, and when I heard of a restaurant that serves it all day, made to order, I was on board to try it. When I got there, it's really a hole-in-the-wall, which kind of put me off at first, but I decided to give it a try. The service is the slowest of any restaurant that I have ever been to (literally). I ordered 5 different sides of dim sum, and my husband and I were given them one at a time, with approx. 10-15 minutes in between--it was torture!!! We were hungry when we got there, and were only allotted like 2 pieces of shrimp each, every 10 minutes. The next few times, we just ordered take-out, which was ready in a reasonable time. The food is amazing, and we'll def. go again, just not for dine-in, only takeout.
Prices are fair.

It has been many years since I had dim sum, never seem to be motivated enough to go to belliare on sunday.
Visited the establishment with three friends for my birthday. Food was great, service was prompt (well we were the only customers), but the lighting is WAY TOO BRIGHT. The overhead lighting needs to be changed, we felt like there were spotlights glaring at us all night. We couldn't wait to get out of the glare. The entire village was hopping last night, except this place. It is a shame because the food was good.

The staff (I think she is the owner) are very rude.
She just didn't want to do business.
She acted like that she earns encough and doesn't care what you want and how you want it. She never wants to give out slice of lemon.
Last time I paid the bill, it was about $16-ish something, I gave her $50, she returned me some quarters. I asked her. She just looked at me:" What? ....well, i don't remember, I have to check".
And then she found the $50 note , she then just give me the change without saying "sorry" or any apology. she just gave me the change, NO smile, no eye contacts. NOTHING..act like that I own her money. She is just very rude and impolite....
Also, the place is not clear, and so do the utensils.......some bowls are broken but still let the customers to use it,
The only good thing of this Cafe is that they claim themselves make the food immediately once they get the order. For the taste is just so so...

The food is very tasty. Friends from out of town always want to go here when they visit. The food doesn't come out very fast so don't go here if you are in a rush. I prefer this place over every other dim sum place in town or even china town. They don't have it on trays like traditional dim sum places, but this way it comes out very fresh. There is very limited seating, but i have never had a problem.

The owner is the RUDEST person I have ever encountered at a restaurant. My friend asked her for a lemon for her hot tea. She refused saying she only had 5 left and could not give her one. Unbelievable! This is one of many rude acts. She acts like she is doing us a favor by letting us eat there and pay for our food. I have been there 4 times at the request of friends, hoping she would ne nicer. However, it never happened. Compared to other dim sum places in Chinatown, it is just average. It is also kind of dirty. Don't go there unless you want to be mistreated.

I love how I can finally get dim sum any time of the day I want. This place serves dim sum at night for those people who are always at work during the day and don't like the crowds the weekends can bring. The food is made to order which means it has not been idling on a cart waiting for someone to take it. it seriously is piping hot and oh so fresh! the ha-gao is the best i have tasted...though smaller. for the freshness and taste, who cares if it's a little smaller! just order more! the sui mai also was great. the cheung fun was probably the worst i have tasted...they keep it healthy by not overloading it with soy sauce so you have to add more yourself- drawback is it hasn't marinated in the fun for as long and the noodles were also pretty watery. this place also serves cha siu so. i have not tried it yet but definintely will. i have only seen cha siu so served in one other place and that was las vegas which is too far away. i never was able to locate cha siu so in the bay area california. and now its in rice village of all places! i like how the place is small and not crowded on friday nights. the prices are reasonable (portions just a little smaller). every dish has a picture next to it so if you are not good at reading pin yin or just don't remember or know what something is called, they've got pictures which are helpful! the pictures are poor though so just realize that the food will taste better than it looks on those glossies! the veggie potstickers had too much mushroom in them so if you don't like mushrooms go for the meat ones (i havent' tried those yet but will too).

Authentic Dim Sum in a quaint cafe in the middle of the Rice village. The menu might be more limited compared to other banquet hall sized Dim Sum venues, but the quality is there. This is probably the best Dim Sum in Houston! I've been living in Houston for about 20 yrs and this place has fresh EVERYTHING! Everything is steamed to perfection. Even their iced tea is fresh! I think they should charge more for these plates, so that people who are expecting not-so-fresh dim dum can go eat at the other places with the carts! =p

As a dim sum afficionado, my experience at this place was very disappointing. The wait between dishes was very long. The wu kwok and spring rolls were soggy and greasy. The texture of the cheung fun's rice noodle indicated that it was at least a day old. The siu mai, shark's fin dumplings, cha siu and daan tart were the smallest I have seen in Houston. On top of that, the shark's fin dumplings had the texture of reheated leftovers.

We loved this place! It has pictures on the menu so it's easier to order if you're unfamliar w/dimsum than ordering off the carts in the Chinatown restaurants. Our waitress was also really friendly & helpful. We ordered shrimp steamed dumplings, pork & shrimp dumplings, eggplant stuffed w/shrimp, turnip cakes, taro balls, pork ribs, & mango pudding. The dishes were delicious & authentic, though the ribs were a little fattier than I'd prefer. Next time we'll have the egg tart dessert. What I really liked is that items are made to order - rare for dimsum. Usually you can only get dimsum at lunch on weekends when it's busy enough to sell items quickly off carts. This restaurant also felt very clean and the 2 of us were stuffed on less than $20 (including dessert!). Finally, you can't beat the location!

I went with some visting family, and i was the only one in the group who had never had dim sum, so i didn't really know what to expect. It was great, the menu was extensive and for those of us that don't speak chinese there is english and pictures (which were helpful when you forget what you order). My family said usually there are carts involved, but for people who don't know what they are in for I think the order ahead and have it brought to the table as it's ready works very well. Be prepared to sit for a while, most of the items are steamed and made fresh so it takes awhile to get served, but it was really excellent. I would recomend coming with a group so there is plenty of conversation between servings.

I would recomend coming with a group so there is plenty of conversation between servings.

Clean, inviting settings and friendly service are only the beginning of the story at Yum Yum Cha, a new dim sum cafe in the heart of the Village. The extensive 60-item menu ensures that every diner will find something to love...and love it we did, so much so that we've visited six times in three weeks. Never had dim sum? Owner Lisa Mak and her family are happy to help you choose - and everything is made fresh when it's ordered, so there's no worry of buffet-style blandness. Start with the siu mai and pork puffs, finish with the custard tarts, and fulfill your heart's desires in between. You'll leave pleasantly stuffed with tasty treats, all without breaking the bank.

With its snug streamlined room and fresh food made to-order, Yum Yum Cha is delightfully different from the popular large-scale dim sum eateries. When in a leisurely mood, we like to start with a freshly brewed pot of golden chrysanthemum…
