We visited Candelari??s on Washington Ave. on 05/16/10 around 5:45pm. The restaurant had 6-8 tables occupied in the dining room and a few more outside. After selecting to be seated inside we were shown to a table in the section that held most of the guest. The waitress was slow in getting to the table and explained that she had three other tables and was ??really busy.? We selected a bottle of Cliff Lede Cabernet Sauvignon (2008) which was offered at a reasonable price ($32).

We had to call our waitress back to place our order of one Margherita Euro Style Pizza and one Papa Albert's with the thin crust. The margherita was very nice, fresh tomatoes and basil but a little short on the mozzarella. Unfortunate the crust was soft and soggy definitely NOT like the ??Italian? pizzas served in Rome of which was expected. All in all the pizza was good, about average with the exception of the crust which was sub-standard. My Papa Albert??s pizza was a bit better relative to what was expected. The crust was good, the amount of toppings was less than expected on a 12? pizza selling for $17.00. The sausage was good but lacked the fennel I??m use to in homemade Italian sausage from true Italian kitchens. The Papa Albert??s was to have had both sausage and pepperoni, but mine was served without the pepperoni: rather than make a fuss I accepted what was delivered. This was only after the situation we experienced as we were seated. The table next to us was served an incorrect pizza along with the balance of their food and it was about 10 minutes before the correct pizza was delivered. In summary, it was an average pizza dinner with a nice bottle of wine with a BIG tab of $67 before tip. Service was slow and lackadaisical. Not worth the price and you can certain find better pizza in Houston and most with a better value for the money.

This is a great alternative to your normal pizza joint. The buffet is a bit expensive, but for the quality of food it's worth it. I usually go about once a month or so on Friday's from work.

I love the surfer.

I really like this place - its on Washington near the turn around. They have a great happy hour - pizza and drinks are super cheap. This is definitely a place you can go with the family. Enjoy inside or dine on patio. Pepperoni thin crust and bellinis ... mmm

We had a group of 4 at Candelari's last night. We showed up at 8pm and were seated outside on the patio. I went to the bar to order a glass of wine (by the way, they changed their wine list and prices- all more expensive by about $2/glass). I returned to the table and after 20 minutes, our waiter still had not returned with our water.

He finally shows, we place our order (which he was thoroughly irritated about)- 1 pizza and a pasta. We wait until around 8:50 and there is still no sign of him. The table next to ours complained to the manager...the next thing we know, a new waiter has come out and informs us, "yeah...I think that other guy is getting fired right now". So, after an hour of terrible service, we still have no food and now a new waiter.

The pasta arrived at 9:15, it had decent flavor but came out very luke warm. The table next to us (who ordered 25 minutes after) got their three pizzas as we still sat and waited for ours. The waiter finally comes out with, sure enough, the wrong pizza. We told him we would just eat it but he really wanted to get it right because he knew it was a terrible dining experience. Our correct pizza then arrived about 10 minutes later and had good flavor as well, but again, after waiting an hour and 40 minutes, nothing could really help the situation.

The manager paid our bill, but honestly, it was embarrassing when he showed us the charges on there. Kettle one vodka, build your own pizza, roma tomatoes, 2 pastas- We never ordered any of those. You have to question the management in the first place because they employed the waiter for who knows how long and how many other complaints. In fact, the table next to us informed us that they had been a week prior and he was the exact same: slow service, incorrect food/drinks, etc.

I live about 3 blocks from Candelari's and used to love the convenience of ordering at the counter, a great happy hour and sitting on the patio to watch a game. I now despise going because of the terrible service, expanded prices, and new menu. Oh, they also took all their tv's down outside. I have no idea if the management changed or if they feel they need to compete with some of the higher end restaurants on Washington, but either way, they need to return to the old system because the new one is terrible.

We used to go to the Wash Ave location pretty often for lunch and/or dinner and the food was decent but not remotely close to any well known Chicago deep dish pizza places in Illinois. But, its about close as you're going to get in Houston.

NOW - its just terrible all around. I'm sorry, but you cant enjoy a meal EVER if the service has upset you. As a business owner, I can say that whoever the manager and cook was on the evening of August 25, 2009 (Tues) just needs to be fired. Obviously, there is an issue here after reading the other reviews. We waited an HOUR (no joke) and there were maybe 4 tables seated in the whole restaurant. Our waiter could sense our frustration and informed us that our pizza was burned and it would be about another ten minutes. We opted to WALK OUT and go for Wendy's instead of probably waiting another 10-15 minutes to eat undercooked or burnt pizza and be po'd all night. Did the manager get off his cell phone and apologize that we sat there for an hour and missed our movie? Nope, but he "graciously" comped my ice tea and a bowl of caesar salad. This was strike 2 in the last 2 weeks...the other time the valet demanded I park my car (high end benz) on some crushed rocks where it was sure to be either dinged or backed into by one of the huge trucks with hitches cramped into tiny spaces. So, it was kinda take it or leave it - so we left it. I'm easy going but c'mon - 2 walk outs??? This is the only place in my life I ever walked out - and TWO times.

Don't waste your time, go to stars pizza down the street, raias down the street (EXCELLENT SERVICE AND PARKING), or order in from papa johns for that matter. Sad, bc this place used to be good to grab some vino and relax when it first opened. I'll never go back. Places with service like this make you want to stop going out to eat. Our waiter was nice and kept the ice-t flowing though. I felt bad that the cook and manager cost him a tip.

Pros: food used to be decent

Cons: need to fire night manager, valet has attitude, LONG wait

When we arrived at Candelari's at 8 on a Saturday night, it was moderately busy with a few small tables open and no one waiting. We were seated pretty quickly but then we sat...and sat...and sat...for 20 minutes until we flagged down the hostess (three times) and finally the manager to point out that we hadn't had our drinks orders taken let alone even seen our waitress.

Pointing out to the manager (presumably - he was wearing a black collared shirt while everyone else on the wait staff had on a white collared shirt) that since we'd been waiting 20 minutes and didn't even have any water, our first round of drinks ought to be comped, he agreed - but acted as if he was doing us a favor. And then he took our order without writing it down and promptly forgot to bring one of the drinks. So my friend had to actually get up from the table and walk over to him and ask for her drink.

Then we waited another 10 minutes before the waitress came over and we were able to order. It took over 40 minutes for our order (three pizzas and a couple of salads) to be served. Totally ridiculous. And the pizza? Expensive and mediocre.

During the course of the entire evening our water glasses were refilled only once, our waitress was completely scatterbrained and checked back on us only once...meanwhile the restaurant never had a wait and was at best only moderately busy. There were multiple servers on the floor...our waitress had no excuse for the poor service.

I would NEVER go back there again and strongly recommend that no one else wastes their time or money there either!

We went to Candelari's last night intending to have pizza there. Parking was a nightmare (I don't like to valet park). When we went in, it was so loud and extremely hot in there we then decided to get it to go instead. We stood in line to order our pizza, but then were very confused as to the whole process (you stand in line to order and get your own drinks, but there are waiters everywhere, makes no sense). The girl taking our order was VERY confused about everything and did not give us either an order # or take our name. Finally one nice waiter noticed our confusion since we were standing around waiting on our pizza (there is no place to wait for to go orders, the bar was full with some sort of meeting). He went and checked on it for us and at least gave us an update. When our pizza was finally done and we got it home, both pizzas in our order were wrong (close, but both missing toppings that we ordered and paid for).

Overall, the food was good but not worth the hassle.

This place has good food, but the hybrid service puts a damper on the whole experience. They actually have to have signs explaining the concept. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, but that would make too much sense. Essentially, they created another step in the ordering and paying process which results in a longer wait time for your food. Too bad - used to be a favorite of mine.

If you're looking for NY style thin crusted pizza, then Candelari's is the place for you. I've only use their delivery service which is always prompt, and they've always gotten my order correct.

The pizza really does remind me of NYC. I love Candelari's pizza but their salads are a bit lame.

Anyone who has complained about Candelari's customer service is too uptight. This spot is great for happy hour. You can get a full (more than an 8oz pour) glass of wine for only $3 and the happy hour pizza's are cheap and yummy. It's a place to relax and enjoy the company your with. They hybrid service update is an interesting move for them and I'm curious if they will keep it up. I prefer the old system because I like being left alone. On the otherhand, it is nice to have someone refilling your water glass and bringing you another glass of wine. I go about once a week straight after work and enjoy myself everytime.

I just went last night. New hybrid service? Who thinks of this stuff. The absence of service is why we went to begin with. No one bothered you. We went because we could sit there for a while after we ate and have drinks with out a the wait staff trying to rush you out. Now you order at the counter with no number. Who knows how they know where to bring the pizza. Ours got all mixed up and went the wrong table. We waited for our pizza for an hour until they figured it out. Also the pizza is more expensive now.(it was4.99$ now it's 7$) Last but not least the red pepper made us all sick. We had a big group with different pizzas and the pepper was the only thing we all had in common. Needless to say its a sad day we used to come here all the time probably once a week with big groups 10-12 people. BEWARE OF THE PEPPER!!!!;)

I drove by Candelari's the other day and saw they were now serving breakfast on the weekends. Since its not far from where I live, I decided to try it. The breakfast menu is really diverse. They serve everything from traditional breakfast to breakfast pizzas. It is nice to have a new breakfast place so close to home and I would recommend trying it out. I think it is served Saturdays and Sundays from 8-10.

I was a customer at Candelari's and quit going due to horrible customer service. I stayed away for about 7 months and just went back this past week. What a difference! What did you do? The service during lunch was absolutely amazing! The line went quickly, and it was long when we walked in, the guy taking our order was very nice, considerate, and friendly. I actually put money in the tip jar for the first time ever because of the guy that took our order. He cleaned our glass before he gave to to us, asked us about Thanksgiving and actually thanked us for coming in to eat lunch there. This is not the Candelari's that I used to come to and am so excited that they finally figured it out in the front. The food is great and the buffet is a great deal for all that you get. I will definitely be back for lunch and maybe even dinner. I can now recommend this restaurant to my friends and not worry that their experience will be a terrible one. Finally someone decided to hire an employee to interact with their customers that can, will, and actually seems to like his job!!!! Don't let him go anywhere or I will not be back......yes, your food is great but customer service is what keeps customers coming back for more.

part 1
I begin:

The first thing I see when I pull into the restaurant is a valet. I didn?t see a sign that said free valet. Which I found out later that it is free. But for people like myself, who don?t like to toss my car keys to some ?dude? I never met before, or pay for a parking spot sixty feet away, I had to look in another parking lot for a parking spot. I had called the place two days before, to ask about having a birthday party for about fifteen adults. The guy I talked to said ?Yeah! Great come on over!? The day arrives and I happily go to the place and ask the man standing behind the bar for the manager. He gives me this indignant look and tells me that he is the GM. So right off the bat, I felt like I was more a bothering than a customer. I told him about speaking to another person and was going to have ten to fifteen people show up, to kind of an informal party. The GM tells me ?oh I can?t let you have a party on a Saturday night?. I explained that I was just having an informal party. Not expecting them to block off any sections, nor have a server assigned to my party. He told me ?well, we are going to be too busy?. I have already invited about fifteen people on the word of the man that answered the phone. Now, this self-important person makes a summary decision that fifteen people are not allowed to come to his restaurant and eat pizza. I told him we were gonna go with what the first guy said. He didn?t like that answer but my other alternative was to call everyone, thirty minutes before the party and have them cancel or meet somewhere else. So I decided to ignore his prior decision and just have my party. The smaller the kingdom the bigger the tyrant.

part 1

Who ever owns this place should really take a close look at these reviews. I live very close to this restaurant and it kills me they cant seem to get it right. I need this restaurant to be good and it is not. The staff is terrible. The ordering process is confusing. They never have anyone at the cash registers and then someone from the bar will yell "order over here". You get over to the bar and there they want to talk about what club there going to that night instead of taking your order. (just an example of one time) Owners are obviously silent partners that never swing by, and if they do management is pre warned. Food is not terrible but it could be a lot better if someone would take as much time for service traing as food training.

Everything I have tried at Cadelari's is great. I especially like the pizza and the wings because the sauce is amazing! I actually get a craving for their pizza; not just pizza but Candelari's pizza so when it occurs I order it in person at the restuarant and wait for it then CHECK the order right then and there. I have tried calling in orders and forget it; won't be close to being correct. Delivery? Oh my, they haven't in probably 2 dozen times EVER gotten my order right on delivery. That being said I will not call them for delivery; it is too stressful and aggravating. Don't bother unless you don't care what you get and I am talking the whole order down to what you actually ordered being wrong. Okay, so you get my point on their listening skills. The food is awesome, it is worth eating but I recommend going to the restaurants and eating there or ordering it in person and checking it before you leave. The sausage is to die for! Get the sausage appetizer and try a few different ones!

Pros: Pizza is great, sausage is great, good menu selections

Cons: Service

I went to Candelari's the first time and dined in and the person who took our order was extremely rude! All we had was pizza and salad and definitely not the best in town, but it was okay. The second (and last) time I picked up my food at Candelari's and again, service was horrible and the food wasn't even good. I definitely woudln't go out of my way for this place, but if the service was up to par then I might reconsider. They messed up my very simple order not once but twice. DO NOT RECOMMEND. Also, the manager could have cared less. Only nice and knowledgable person in the entire restaurant was the bartender.

We found Candelari's on Washington while everyone in Houston was fleaing from Houston during Hurricane Rita. While other restaurants were raising their prices, Candelari's remained the same on, price, taste, and service. I highly recommend the wheat, thick crust, T-Rex if you're a meat loving pizza eater. The wings are good as well... Go try Happy Hour on the patio with a couple Shiners...

We live near Washington and have to make a decision whether to go to Star Pizza or Candilari's. Lately Candilari's has been winning out. If you are in the mood for a great thin crust pizza then this is the place to go. ( I haven't tried the pan style pizza yet) The sausage is awesome, but also the cheese pizza too. It's the best around. Great service as well. If you go for the buffet they will take suggestions and get it out on the buffet for you. I love pizza and this is definately a place to try.

Pros: pizza, sausage

Service can be sporadic, and the place is chaotic when busy.

Pizza is mediocre. Better pizza can be had at Romano's (for NY style) and Star (for Chicago). Don't get a calzone from Caldelari's. They think all there is to a calzone is folding a pizza in half.

The Itallian sausage they make is the number one reason to frequent this establishment. A near perfect rendition of NY Sausage and Peppers to be found this far south is a treat. You can buy the caraway filled tubesteaks for home use as well!

Pros: Italian Sausage

Cons: Pizza, Calzones, Chaotic

For a small restaurant they sure can make some pizza! The service is great (so hard to find these days). The staff knows their menu and make solid recommandations. If I lived 10 mins closer, they would know me by name!!!
