I have absolutely no idea where all of these bad reviews are coming from. I am a regular customer of this store, whether it be for my reptiles, hamster, bunny, or dogs. I've purchased one puppy from the NEW Petland Vineyard and he hasn't had one bit of illness in the 10 months he's been in our home. The owners were friendly, open to any and every question I asked about his breeder and where he came from, and the staff was more than helpful. AKC FORBIDS their breeders (who MUST have an AKC license to work with Petland) to run an establishment with any resemblance to a puppy mill. Most of these puppies grew up in homes nicer than mine. As far as every other animal they carry in the store, the only problem I ran into with the staff was their ability to tell the gender of a baby bunny (which most people can't do anyways). The staff with the reptiles and fish are wonderful, especially James and Jessica. Just remember the J's.

To disgustedpetowner: You purchased an Egyptian Mau from that store?? They have never had one of those there so obviously you are talking about a different petland. People who write these reviews can say anything so make sure you are getting your facts straight. The Petland in the Vineyard won a national award for the best new Petland in the country. The reasons are numerous including great breeders (NO PUPPY MILLS!!), clean store, customer satisfaction etc. Unfortunately things do happen when puppies leave the store. I had a friend whose puppy got sick and the owners paid for all the vet bills until the puppy was well.

This Petland is wonderful. Friendly staff and great selection of products. Very clean store and puppies were great! I bought 2 puppies from this store and couldn't be happier. I don't know what some of these comments are about. Probably independent breeders that have a an agenda such as hatred of pet stores.

I wanted to buy a puppy for my mom and did a research on puppies mills and for every body who are saying that petland has puppies mills is a lie.

AKC does not allow breeders to have puppies mills and AKC main office is in Missouri and most puppies from PETLAND are form there.

Because AKC needs to check the condition of the breeders and make sure they have the standards of AKC such a clean areas and healthy dogs.

So if you buy a AKC puppy you are in a good hands.

I got a yorkie puppy male at 10 weeks and he is just the healthiest puppy I ever seen and he gets a long with my pitbull male.

So before you buy any puppies do your research.

This is a new location just opened up in December '09. The staff our knowledgeable and super helpful! The store itself is super clean and surprisingly does not smell like a pet store.
I have been to the other Petland that was in the same shopping center and understand all the complaints below. But this location has different owners and it seems they are handling their business pretty well.
Now all this nonsense about "puppy mills" is a joke!!! I have been to a puppy mill and know that treatments of animals there is ridiculous and inhumane!! But none of those puppy mills were AKC registered like every breeder sending puppies to this location are. I actually personally knew one of the breeders of one of the puppies i was looking at. This family breed and raised the puppies in an environment better than the one I live in!

To sum it up.... I loved my experience and recommend that any person in need of a pet should come check this place out!

Please do not get your pets (or any other supplies) from here! They get many of their dogs from puppy mills.

Despite lawsuits, they continue to do business with puppy mills.

Please consider adoption! Mixed breeds are often much healthier and you can save a life! (not to mention some dough.) If you must have a purebred, please look into a breed-specific rescue.

ATTN: SRR0018 - I am not an animal crazy as you would say but I am someone who thinks of my pet as my family. Petland has sold puppies from puppy mills since its conception. Just because a dog is from a USDA breeder means nothing. USDA is part of the federal agriculture guidelines. All that means is a dog is considered cattle just like your beef or pultry. When a USDA breeder is done with the mom or dad, it is is disposed of (in not a nice way), they dont have to offer vet care of proper boarding. They can be kept in crates like chickens. I have done my research after buying a dog from a Petland. Boy was I unaware. The Petland location at the Vinyard was shut down and now Petland has suckered another person into opening a franchise. Yes its a new store but they operate with the same practices of selling puppies that come from puppy mills. I am in sales and have been for over 7 years and although its my job to sell my companies products it is not my job to mislead a consumer on what they are buying.

Ask yourself this....to buy a dog why do you ahve to sign a multiple page contract. You sign your all your rights away as a consumer on there 5 plus page contract. Read it ... just see for yourself......

Educate yourself as I educated myself beforing promoting Petland.... Its not the animal crazies who are nuts its a company that knowingly operates misleading consumers who are nuts....

Cons: Petland Sells Puppies From Puppy Mills

.

As for this store location, I am pretty sure it just opened. Just because someone has a bad experience at one Petland store, dont assume you will have a bad experience at another. Obviously I don't advocate buying from any place that doesn't take care of their pets but it's entirely up to management and store owner on how well treated the pets are.

Readers should be aware that there are several animal crazies out there who don't want business like Petland around but would rather have you adopt pets from pet clinic etc.

To Nohaters comment, Salespeoples goal is to sale.. thats how they make their money. What do you expect? Any salesperson who makes commission on sales should be concerned with selling things.

This is addressed to notahater...interesting that you used to work there...do you know if they get any of their puppies from puppy mills. At one point, I heard that petland uses puppy mills and I don't know if this is accurate or not....I was going to buy a puppy from Petland and want to make sure I am getting a healthy puppy..
Thanks...DT09

We bought a beautiful little puppy from this store last month. Within three weeks (well within the contracted limit I might add) problems started with her urine output. In other words...she was peeing everywhere at anytime...one right after the other. She was having urinary frequency. We took her to the contracted Vet only to find out that Petland had filed for bankruptcy and that they (the contracted Vet) was not honoring the contract because "they (Petland) owed them a lot of money". They gave us the company line that they still worry about the health of the puppy but would not honor the contract. Still worried about our puppy, we took her to our regular and trusted vet (located on Bandera road near Mainland and the WalMart) to find out she had Cystitis and crystals in her urine. Apparently crystals in puppies is uncommon and usually occurs in older dogs. Hmmm...is this a genetic problem? Second hmmm...did the contracted vet, Petland, and breeder know about this problem before the sell? Third and final hmmm...should I contact legal counsel about this (ie. breach or contract fraud)? If someone out there is having the same or similar problem from this store, vet, breeder please post a reply.

AVOID! AVOID! AVOID! We purchased a Pure Bred Egyptian Mau from this store and had nothing but headaches, incorrect documentation, refusal to return phone calls, and misleading neutering certificates as a result. The owner?s of this particular store should be facing prosecution for animal endangerment.

Upon having the kitten at home for 1 month, and introducing him to our 5 other cats, we decided that at his age and settled state he was now ready to be neutered. We contacted the vet, and having made an appointment, presented our neutering certificate in the belief that the operation was covered by it, as we had been informed at the time of sale.

Not so. What the ?neutering certificate? actually covered was the operation itself. What it didn?t cover was the lab work, the anesthetic, the after operation pain medication, nor either any pre or after care. All required in order to perform the procedure safely and at minimal discomfort o the animal. In fact, of the total cost of the operation, which was $256.00, the so called ?free neutering certificate? only covered $30.00. Just over 10%.

Next. 3 months after purchase, we finally received our purebred paperwork. It was incorrectly filled out. We contacted Mr. Reynard?s store again. No response from the owner or his wife to our enquiries as to how to obtain the correct documentation. We finally had to visit the store and speak to the manager on three separate occasions in order to get the matter resolved and the correct paperwork.

They employ youths who know nothing of animal care and the owners are only interested in profit margin rather than the welfare of the animals, as evidenced in their fake neutering certificates. We were treated both rudely and without any form of genuine customer service once our money was in the cash register. Its as simple as that. If you are a genuine animal lover do not do business with this establishment or Petland in general.

DO NOT BUY A PUPPY FROM THIS STORE! Our puppy became very ill the next day after we bought him. Thankfully, I recognized that he was ill right away and took him to an emergency clinic. He had Parvo and Coccidia - life threatening illnesses for puppies. He survived only because we made sure he got immediate treatment which involved a plasma transfusion, immediate hospitalization and many medicines. Of course, we paid a very high price for the puppy to begin with ($900), plus close to $1,000 in vet bills. Buyer Beware!
