Last night was the first time I'd ever been to Benihana, and it will most likely have been the last time.

The drinks were - okay. The waiter was average at best. Then the "chef" came to the table. The guy was horrible with his utinsels, but that's easily forgiven. Was is not - is fingernails were dirty - like he just got done working on his car dirty. The seafood was also way overcooked. I don't see how someone that filthy and who can't even griddle shrimp could be called a "chef".

The onion soup had good flavor. But it was luke warm at best. The salad was good. The fried rice was also decent, but about on the same level as Chinese takeout. The "shrimp appetizer" that came with our meal was disgusting. WAY too much salt from our "chef" and way overcooked.
We ordered the "Surf Side" and the "Rocky's Choice" to split. Every item on the seafood dish was overcooked. The shrimp, scallops and calamari were like rubber, and again, WAY too much salt. I will say, the steak that came with the meat dish was good, and nicely cooked, as well as the chicken. The vegetables: Burnt onions, and undercooked zuchini.
By the time we got a couple of bites into our entrees, we were full. After sitting unattended by our waiter for 30 minutes after w'd finished, we asked for our check. they then sang Happy Birthday to a couple of other guests, delivered drink orders, and finally after another 20 minutes brought our check.
I had been given $75 in gift certificates from a customer of mine (the only reason I was prompted to go) and that didn't quite over the bill, so I presented my credit card as well. After an additional 20 minutes, my card and receipt was brought back. The entire amount had been charged to my card. So I pointed it out to the waiter who rushed it back to the manager. After ANOTHER 15 minutes or so, the manager came over with the adjusted check, thanked us for our patience, and presented me with the remainder of the bill.
Today, I checked my bank statements and I was charged for BOTH the mistake, and the partial amount. I called the restaurant, and was told that it would take a day or two for the $94.75 to come off of my card, which I undertood, but it still gives a bad aftertaste to an already poor evening out.

I'll be spending my money elsewhere in the future.

Let me preface this note to let you know I have been a long-time patron of these restaurants located in Houston and Dallas and my family and I have always enjoyed our experience. My daughter was celebrating her birthday on February 4th and we made reservations for the Research location. We were seated promptly at 5:45 p.m. Our waiter greeted us and took our drink order and returned with our drinks in a timely manner and said he would return for our order. We told him we would like appetizers and he said he would return shortly. After waiting an hour for our waiter to return I went to the hostess stand because there was no one else around. I asked what had happened to our waiter and that we had been waiting for an hour with no service. We were sitting back in a corner where no one came by at all. The hostess apologized and sent our waiter over. At this time we informed him that one of our guests had a seafood allergy, he clearly noted it on the order but we could sense a big attitude change due to my complaint. Our chef came and greeted us and reviewed the order with us and the information concerning the seafood allergy. He made a few comments regarding my displeasure with the service. He started with his show and promptly threw one of the spatulas at the birthday girl. It hit the sauces he had set in front of her and splashed red and yellow sauce all over her white outfit and hit her on her shoulder, had it been a knife we would have had to go to the emergency room. He was very apologetic and gave us 3 paper napkins to help with the spill, 3 and it was a large spill. Our waiter never came by once to clean the mess from the table and the manager did not stop by to apologize or acknowledge what had happened. We waited for assistance that never came. I and three others in my party had to get up from our seats, go to the wait station, get a towel to wipe up and we cleaned the table ourselves. After asking a waitperson passing by, we were brought a glass of club soda to get the stains out of her clothing. A passing waitress asked if we needed more napkins and brought cloth so that helped, again our waiter was no where to be found or the manager for that matter. The dinner from this point went from bad to worse. The chef after that could not concentrate and our food was awful and we had to remind him when he started to cook seafood about the allergy and that our guest needed his food cooked first. My dinner did not even resemble what I have gotten at the Houston or Dallas Benihana. I usually get the same dish and this certainly wasn??t what I ordered. Needless to say one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had. I received a bill that was $380 with a big gratuity added. I complained to the manager and he offered to take the gratuity off which wasn??t to my satisfaction. I don??t know your idea of how to run a restaurant, but as far as I??m concerned Benihana is doing a horrific job! Had I gone somewhere else and spent that kind of money I would expect only the best. I could have gone to IHOP and had a better meal. I wanted you to know this is how things are run at the Research location and to let you know that I will be telling everyone I come in contact with not to patronize this restaurant. We were clearly punished by the staff because of complaining about the poor service. I have worked in the service industry for the Four Seasons Hotel and waiting an hour for someone to take your order and then having the staff stain your clothes and throw a cooking utensil at you because of a complaint is simply unimaginable. My daughter could have been seriously hurt and her clothes were damaged and the manager offered to take the gratuity away from the waiter, clearly not the answer. He could have bought our drinks or paid for our inedible food. Thank you for your time and attention in this matter, and you better think twice before you decided to eat at Benihana.

Dined on Fri eve Oct 9th, overall negitive experience, We have dined in Benihanna Locations in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and London, never have we seen such old, outdated, dilapidated surroundings for a Benihanna, it is disgraceful, and we thought we were in a hybrid "Tex-Mex" place...All and all not worth the time spent, and how about getting some real Japanese "Grill Cooks", if we are going to pay a premium for this kind of service let's at least make it more "original"..If I want Tex-Mex I will eat at "Chuys"!!

We are from out of town and wanted to spend a fun night with the kids, so we chose to go here because I had been to one in California. We called ahead and tried to make a reservation, but all we got was a constant ringing, no one ever picked up. After trying that 3 or 4 times we figured we would travel out there and try to get seated.

It took us a while to drive all of the way out there and to find the place, and when we did we liked the free and reserved parking. Going inside was a different story.

The receptionist asked us if we had reservations, to which we replied "no" and she laughed a little and said it would be a while before we could get seated. We told her that we tried calling and making reservations and that the phone just rang and she said that the ringer was turned off, so we would have to wait.

Huh? Serious? Your phone had the ringer off and because of that you aren't even going to try and get us in. We left. And we won't ever go back. With customer service like that I would hate have stayed for dinner, who' s knows what we would have experienced.

the nicest thing about our experience at Benihanas last night was the worker in the parking lot saving spaces for customers. This parking help was great.

Upon entering, the young inexperienced staff seemed overwhelmed with the weekend crowd.

When shown to our reserved table, we discovered it faced another group of people...these folks were an unhappy, sad extended family bunch who looked downtrodden with life. The y had two kids, one loudly KICKED the table and provided a sonic boom, boom, boom for hours, never growing tired and never being noticed or corrected by his relatives. Because we faced this group the whole meal, it was impossible to totally tune them out.

We noticed large carts of dirty linen and dirty dishes parked along the wall where WE WERE EATING..and stayed there the whole evening.

The chef did a fine job and the food tasted good , and it should have since it was loaded with MSG. The price wasn't too bad. I fed 8 folks for around $200 and the birthday obligation was done.

Fun for kids....? YES...fine dining? ha ha...not quite.

I fairly agree with the rest of the crowd, this Benihana doesn't run with the best of 'em, BUT, if you're looking for a fairly inexpensive sushi outing...this is the place. They have happy hour everyday except Saturday, and I have to say, you can get about 3 rolls, a couple of pieces of sushi and some drinks for 2, for about $30 bucks! The rolls are good, or should I say good enough. Definitely worth the $30!

It is with great disappointment that I write this. The restuarant is no longer Japanense but some sort of hybrid Tex-Mex. The resturant management need to refocus on re-creating a good Japense experience not the mess they have. There is not one Japense face in the establishment. All staff are hispanic. There should at least be Japanese cooks???

The HIbachi cookers whack the spatulas and knives and make a lot of noise. The original Japense Cookers were much more skilled and their food throws were much more accurate. The accoustics are awful in the place as it is just banging and laughing. The laughing is great but when everyone in the place laughs at one time it reminds me a of a gaggle of geese. Wait staff do not look neat or clean, their clothing looked unkept and worn out. There just does not seem to be any of the authenticity that was once their. Good eatery atmosphere should come with good food and although the food tastes very good the ambiance is gone, the decor is boring and outdated, overpriced for the experience. A very poor use of space as well as ugly decor and ignorant wait staff.

I LOVE Benihana in general- but the one in Ausin is TERRIBLE. I eat at locations in other cities quite frequently, as well as order takeout. I have tried the Benihana here in Austin, not once, but at least 3 times over the past year- always hoping it was just a bad night; It has never failed to dissappoint. The thing that makes this Benihana really awful is the service / management. The hostesses and manager are at best negligent even ranging to rude. I really don't understand how this location can be consistently sub-par.

I complained once to the corporate Benihana, and was informed that unfortunately, this location is one of a few that are franchised out, not owned by the actual Benihana, and therefore they cannot assure it's quality; and they mentioned that unfortunately they get a number of complaints about this location.

The Hibachi grill is a wonderful experience if you've never tried it, and the food can be quite good, but if you actually enjoy Benihana in other cities, I would NOT reccomend choosing this location for your dinner. Also, I would reccomend against the Austin Benihana if you care at all about customer service. Additionally, this Benihana location does not provide all the takeout either, for point of reference.

Well Austinites........another review. As you know I tell it like it is "the good" the bad and the ugly." This is one of those greatest ever Japanese fun eateries. The chefs are so cool and entertaining. We had the best time and enjoying our company . The sushi is out of this world good. If you need parking they have an attendant to help you park in the area moving cones to park your car. I love the cosmopoliton drinks .Yes guys to die for! I did not care or pay attention to other people around me becuase I was busy eating the food was so darn GOOD!! INDULGE YOURSELF WITH THE BEST! Not your typical eatery! Come relax and enjoy.'
I will return many times and you will too.HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

LAST NIGHT MY WIFE AND I WENT TO BENIHANA AND HAD THE BEST TIME. AS SOON AS WE DROVE TO THE PARKING LOT THEY HAD SPACES RESERVED FOR US WITH A CONE. ONE OF THIER STAFF ASKED IF THAT IS WHERE WE WOULD LIKE EAT AND WE SAID YES. THEN HE OPENED THE SPACE FOR US. WHEN WE WALKED IN IT WAS CLEAN AND THE HOSTS WERE VERY FRIENDLY AND SAT PROMPTLY. THEY HAD GREAT SERVICE AND GREAT FOOD. AND WHAT A SHOW WE HAVE BEEN TO MANY BENIHANA AND NEVER HAD THIS MUCH FUN.

What a weird experience! I am not sure who is running this show but they need new management...stat! We tried to eat here on a Sunday night at 6:30 pm..upon driving up to the parking lot, there were orange cones set up in all of the parking places in front of the restaurant. Two men were standing there talking and it was not clear what the heck was going on. When we walked by the window, we noticed it was painted like a Wendy's restaurant--advertising 2 for 1 Chicken Cordon Bleu with Champagne! Isn't this a Japanese restaurant? Anyway we walked inside to a nearly empty restaurant where we were asked whether we had a reservation We did not and we were told that it would be "15 OR 25 minutes"--well at this point we left. We did not even get past this as the stoic hostess had no explanation or welcome for us. How hard is it to realize that you are in the service industry and act appropriately---or to train people to GREET a customer who has CHOSEN to eat at your restaurant. Looks like they are trying possibly to class this joint up--and failing miserably! Take it over to Mikado or Musachino--i know they don't do a show, but they also treat you like they are glad to see you and happy you have decided to spend your hard earned cash with them!

I was at benihanas on Wednesday 13th of June. We have been to benihanas in other cities but this one wasn't nearly as nice. We were told it was going to be an hour and a half. We decided to have some drinks while we waited. The bartender was helpfuIl and the drinks were refreshing. We were seated after 30 minutes so I am assuming that other people in front of us left or something. It was really hot and the service was bad. It looked like each server had 5 tables(of 6 or 8 people) and were literally running through the restaurant. The only manager was running around the building taking tables too. We had to wait about 10 minutes for a waitress and another 10 for our drinks. the chef put on a really good show but with the table on it was even hotter. We ended up waiting another 10 minutes at the end of the night for them to bring us our check. By that point we were hot and full and just wanted to get out. The food was really good but for those prices the service sucked. I am used to really good service at those prices. Six of us went and our tab was almost 300 dollars. At those prices I really expect a nicer looking establishment, better service, and to sit in airconditioner.

My husband, daughter and myself visited the Austin Benihana on Sat., May 19, 2007 for the first time (we have been to locations in San Antonio and Las Vegas previously). We we told the wait would be about an hour and a half. It seemed a bit long, but we decided to have a drink and an appetizer in the bar. We sat at one the tables in the bar and couldn't get anyone to take our order, so we had to move to the bar. We still had to flag a bar tender down - they weren't voluntarily taking orders.

When we were finally seated in the dining area it was apparent how dirty and run down this place was. The food and the chef were okay, although I wouldn't recommend the salmon. It was cooked in a parchment pouch on the grill and didn't have much seasoning or flavor. By the time we left we have spent $200 (bar bill, dinner and tip included). For $200 you can find much better food and service and a classier establishment in Austin.

These owners need to visit Benihana in Las Vegas to learn how it should be done! I understand the San Antonio location has the same owner as the Austin location. At least the San Antonio location is newer and cleaner, but is lacking in atmosphere and the food and chefs have been inconsistent.

Cons: Dirty, run down, expensive

.

When we sat down it took quite some time before we got our drinks. The waitress never came around to check on us. And the entire time it felt like they were just trying to get to the next table as quick as possible. It was early on a weekday and there was no one waiting.
We had a question about the bill. The manager was not very experienced and was nervous and shaking the entire time. We asked for the corporate number and he gave us the restauant number. We again asked for a number, when we called it was an apartment complex! We asked if this where they take customer complaints for Benihana's and they said yes. Finally we left a complaint on the answering machine and apparently the manager we had a problem with is the owner's brother.

Do NOT go to the Austin Benihana!

I've been to multiple Benihanas, in Dallas and in London, and I've loved the restaurant. My family likes to eat there all the time- for birthdays, midday lunches, anything. But this Austin location, is by far, the worst. The price is the same anywhere you go, and I'll gladly pay for the food in Dallas and London. But the food at this location is not worth it. The service is alright- I recently tried to make a reservation during the day on a Friday, was told there was a two hour wait and reservations were booked up. And that's fine. But later in the evening, I tried to call back to see how busy they were, and was put on hold for 6 minutes. May not seem like a long time, but when you just want to ask a question-it is. After hanging up and calling back, I got only a busy signal for another 5 minutes. My friend really really wanted to go -against my warnings- and when finally reaching through, I was put on hold again. My friend finally agreed to go elsewhere- smart girl.

I have gone here three times and I eat out regularly. I must say this is an excellent place to eat for both the entertainment (thanks to Moses, puts on a great show).
If you are worried about price, then this place is not for you. I could care less about the price when it comes to quality, but some would disagree and go to McDonalds or something.
You will get pleny of food for the price. You start off with Soup, then salad, then shrimp, then vegetables, then rice, then the main course cooked in Benihana's special sauces. You'll get either chicken, steak, shrimp or Lobster cooked to perfection. They don't rush to get you out and I suggest making reservations. Sorry, but there is no privacy for those who want to eat and be entertained by yourselves. Try inviting a group would be the best way to go unless your social and don't mind sitting next to strangers.

Regards,

Lee

Benihana is a restaurant which makes you feel that it has a very traditional japanese decorum. When coming in, you have the option of habachi or regular. Hibachi is when they sit you at the grill and the chefs cook in front of you. They will do all sorts of cool tricks as they cook your food, so basically you are watching a show. I have always seen that they sit at a grill and and try to fill in the extra seats, so becareful if you aren't comfortable with this. The sushi here is good, and the hibachi experience is always worth it if you have never been, albeit expensive. I got Hibachi and the grill once, and it was a very hefty bill for two people so watch out! Nonetheless, I think the Hibachi experience is great for dates, otherwise their regular restaurant experience is good too. Overall, the food and experience is there, but for me the price wasn't.

I really like this restaurant; not sure why there are so many bad ratings. I always order the chateaubriand. The chicken fried rice is the best I've had yet; the most authentic. If you've been more than a couple of times, you'll begin to notice repetiveness in the shows. But overall, it's still a good time with great food.

I've been here a few times as my friends keep recommending it. The chef puts on a great show and can be very entertaining. It is a good atmosphere, and if you have a large group you can ussually be seated at the same table. However, the food is overpriced and not so good. Most people, I've noticed, have enough fun at the restaurant that they do not realize the food is average at best.

Everything about this place is great, ignore the gripes from people who wanted it to cost as much as Applebees. I've been to a lot of these places, and the only gripe anyone can reasonably have is ambience. This place does crazy business, so I don't know why they have not moved or rennovated, it does need it. It's not horrible or anything, but if they built a place 3 times as big, that was 3 times nicer, they'd still be packing the place every day of the week.

A tip: If you find a chef you love, you can often request them if you go on weeknights (the best time to go for addicts)

I have been to Bennihanas in California where sushi & rolls were excellent. I came in to expect something similar, thinking Bennihanas would all be the same....but what a surprise. Sushi was average & waitress was confused as to what we ordered. Don't think I will ever go back.

It's neat to watch the chef cook and do antics right in front of you. You are seated with other people around a grill/table, so there is little privacy, and it is rather cramped. A meal is quite costly (minimum $15 each), so I split it with someone and left a tad hungry. You're better off not splitting probably. The whole process is lengthy, so do not go if in a rush. This particular location is pretty ugly inside too, and there is no hint of Japanese culture, which I did not like. I got a good chef who did some really neat tricks. Some may not be as good though. In conclusion, give it a whirl, but seek a better location (another city?) if you can, unless they are all like this one. This is not a place to come regularly.

Cons: , Time, No privacy

The place is really expensive, an average dinner costs $20 for just one dish, excluding a drink. The cook makes it in front of you, but you can get better tasting teriyaki chicken at the malls food court. Don't waste your time and money

I love this place. It is a little on the pricy side if you are there for a full meal, but the sushi bar rocks. I love that they give you free edimame and miso soup. great place for casual and formal dining.

Benihana's is my favorite Japanese restaurant! The one in Austin has very good service, and the chefs are also excellent. The restaurant's atmosphere always seems to be a little bit hectic, but it is a fun place to go for great food!

If you want a great steak, this is the place. Benihana's has high standards, come in and taste the difference.
