There are so many wine bars in Houston these days that it's hard to know where to go, so if you haven't tried SoVino, this is definitely one of the wine bars you don't want to miss. The decor has a bit of a Miami feel, with hardwood floors and white, tufted leather, rounded booths along the main back wall. The booth are great for date night, so request one when you make your reservation if you are looking for something more romantic than a square table.
The wine list is pretty good but I found that ordering by the glass could be quite expensive, with most glasses running $9-13/glass. But my overall experience here, especially with the food, was excellent. We started with the homemade pate served with small cornichons, a perfect complement for the red wine. For dinner I ordered the short ribs, served with polenta and melt-in-your mouth delicious. I shared another dish with my girlfriend but to be honest I can't remember what she had - my dish, the shortribs, were soooo good my girlfriend told me "I could lick the plate." We were too full for dessert but the table next to us had the s'mores dessert, a grand affair of marshmallow, graham crackers, chocolate, and a tall silver burner where they could make the the dessert at the table, campfire style. The girls at the table were having a ball and I will definitely order it next time I'm there with a few friends.

Pros: Nice ambiance, good food, great for date

Cons: Wines by the glass are pretty expensive

OK, so you are driving down lower Westheimer and see a wine bar ... it looks strip mall from the outside but who knows?

You walk into a late afternoon oasis. Pleasant staff, beautiful fixtures suitable to a wine bar in southern California. The staff greeted me with a smile and walked me through the lengthy wine list.

I hung out in my comfortable banquette drinking fabulous wines. As my mellow haze progressed, I moved up a level to the dining area and took in the menu. Too many choices at first sight but ultimately I went to the favorites recommended by my waitress.

Empanaditas and truffle pate were fabulous additions to my decadence. Dessert was wonderful brownies. Overall an unexpected evening.
