Torchy's is not the most authentic Tacos, but they are very creative and tend to throw the kitchen sink at you to get your satisfaction. For example, instead of putting avocado on a taco, they deep fry it first. Yummy, but sometimes simplicity is better.

Nevertheless, I would recommend.

Well,
I had the pork tacos. There were only two small ones on the plate. They looked lonely but they were good!
It did leave me satisfied though.

Great place for lunch.

Being New to Austin I've been through trials and many errors. My stylist Vicki recommended Torchy's. She said it was one of south austin's favorites. It was so good we eat there every week now. My husband has made his way through the menu and still cant deside what he likes best. I like the fried advocato and queso! The people watching is great too.

The tacos here are very creative - even the ones that don't sound like they're going to work somehow never cease to amaze. Each sauce is different and delicious. I can agree that for a taco truck type of place, the tacos seem to be a bit pricey but I am a healthy eater and always find two is enough. So at about $3.50 each, a $7 meal ain't that steep in the end. Can't wait to try the burger joint next door!

Torchy's use to be great! Their tacos and sauces were consistently good....when they were in a trailer. Unfortunatley since moving into their bigger establishment they have lost all quality control and customer service. We ordered 6 taco's...4 different varieties and waited 45 minutes for them to be made....I mean really- eggs take 3 min. to make so right off the bat I was dissapointed... but I figured these are awesome tacos so it's worth the wait. Wrong again! The egg, potato and cheese was bland, the bean and cheese was the smallest taco I have ever seen (I mean beans are the cheapest ingredient so you can load em up- but no- there was literally a tablespoon of beans in my taco). The fried avacado just tasted spoiled (this use to be my fav but not anymore... it's just sad)- and the the "special" chicken fried steak was salty...probably to cover up the lack of taste. The tortillas were soggy and flaked apart- most of them sticking to the aluminum foil. On the up side the green chile queso was DELICIOUS and the coffee was good....but the chips we're super greasy so that was disappointing too. Just to let you know 6 taco's cost $27...um yes- TACOS....I could have gotten 3x the amount of food for 1/3 the cost at Juan in a Million and actually been full and enjoyed my breakfast or hell Taco Cabana is more flavorful and I hate fast food! I am marking this place off my list and will never go there again- sad to lose an Austin establishment...but when the customer service and quality of food goes ya just got nothing! UPDATE: SO- over 2 years have past and I vowed to never go here again but when Torchy's Suburbia (William Cannon location) opened up and a friend was in visiting from out of town I gave in and went for breakfast. Torchy's Suburbia is AMAZING! They are everything the old torchy's was- fast, friendly, huge taco's at a great price! I have been back several times and am happy every time! Therefore, I give Torchy's Suburbia 5 stars and the Torchy's on 1st 1 star to average out to a 3 star rating. Way to go Torchy's, this location is clean, close to me and I didn't have to look at a single pair of skinny jeans while I ate my delicious taco!

This is the first taco place and first local establishment I tried since locating to Austin. I live in the Bouldin area and was giddy about the small businesses here. Atlanta doesn't have stuff like this and if they do "beware". I liked the concept immediately (The Trailer Park and Eatery) and wanted to get "local" right away. I bought him some chicken fingers and fries and a root beer float to share with my son from 'Shuggies' and just one taco from 'Torchy's' for myself. I didn't know what to get and with any new place, afraid of not getting something good, decided to try "The Trailer park" I think that is what it is called. The taco was good but, the sauce it came with made it something special. I also thought it was generously made. I tried my sons food, too. Absolutely really good fries! It has a crispy coating, which I love! But, the best thing of all was the root beer float. Just plain ol' root beer and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was sooooo good! I don't know why! I brought my husband the next day and he ordered himself the shrimp po'boy (my husband is from New Orleans so nothing compares but, he did enjoy himself eating there) and I helped myself to two new tacos, "The Democrat" and "Chicken Fajita"! I bought two because, I knew my husband would want to try, and he did and he really liked them! The Democrat is so good! I love the big hunk of avocado they give you on top and the fabulous sauces that come with every taco! I haven't tried everything but, I definitely want to!

Pros: Price, quality, service, food and fun!

Cons: Dusty whenever a car pulls up into the lot.

Let me say it again - I love, love, Torchy's. And my husband is okay with that, because he has something going on with them as well. Anyone who can read my other reviews can see that I'm a stickler about food -- I think way too often places get by on a reputation totally built on hype (kind of an emperor's new clothes thing) or that caused them to give up trying so hard, they put more effort into their food descriptions that in the food, or they just flat out can't get there. That's why I love Torchy's -- interesting take on something simple, fresh ingredients, good attitude. The pork carnitas taco is good enough to make me wrestle my mother for. Plus, how can you not love sitting outside on a breezy warm night munching on huge, decadent tacos? My one solitary quibble with them is that half the time they get our order wrong. They don't give us the wrong thing, they just fail to ring up/deliver an item, but this only happens at the S. First airstream location, not the brick and mortar store. They're always nice and apologetic about it, and the food is just yummy enough to make me not give a whoop. (We also twice tried Shuggie's, their trailer next door...I'm waiting on that one. The first time the shrimp po'boy was hands down the best I've ever eaten -- sweet shrimp, incredible toppings. But the next time it was lacking shrimp, and what was there was fried into leather. Husband likes the burgers though!)

Good food! Most orders in small portions, so be sure to order plenty. In fact, order something with green chile. They do it the right way. This is about as South Austin as it gets, so be sure not to miss it.

Torchy's is a small trailer parked on S. 1st street in the Bouldin Creek neighborhood that serves the best tacos in town. This place has turned out to be quite popular because of their inexpensive gourmet tacos. The green chile roasted pork and spanish goat cheese taco is the best thing that has ever happened to my mouth. Their queso is also "out-of-this-world". So go try it and find out!
