Not sure why so many negative reviews. I think Birds is great. I've been coming here for over a year now and haven't had any bad experiences. It's nice to always be greeted at the door and offered a beer or water while waiting. The stylists have always been friendly to me, and I like my look when I leave.

From a guy's perspective, I highly recommend Birds.

So theres quite a few of these around town these days and their slogan is "Walk-in, Rock-out". I didn't have to wait very long and was in the chair. I explained I needed a little length on and just wanted it to look "cool". She got done and stuck some nasty wax on my head and tried to style it.. I didn't feel very cool or rockin, and wish I wouldnt brought a hat as I was kinda embarrassed to walk to the counter and pay, much less go out in public with a silly looking hair cut, I looked like a 3 year old. Needless to say I imediately went home and took a shower to try and get the waxy goo out of my hair, then proceeded to Adolf's Barber Shop where they fixed me up right and looked like a mans haircut.

Pros: Kinda cheap haircut

Cons: Not a very good one.

Talked to the hairdresser with specifics and she still tried to part my hair on the wrong side. Then after being specifically told that I did not want my bangs really short she cut them off so that all I have is forehead. Thinned the hair out so much that I have almost no hair. If you are female & you want to look like a female - you shouldn't go to a Birds Barbershop.

I recently moved to Austin and my first haircut in town was a Birds. I've since returned as they do a great job and the prices are extremely reasonable. The hairstylists on my visits have ealways been friendly and warm. I have received great haircutsand will definitely return.

This is a letter I just wrote to Michael Portman and Jayson Rapaport - owners of Bird's:

First, lemme say I'm glad Bird's opened up the Lamar location. Your people do a damn site better job than chain barbershops such as Supercuts ever will, and you're a refreshing twist on old school haircutting, especially for men. Bravo.

Today I called the Lamar store asked how backed up they were. They said the wait was about an hour. I said fine, can you write me in, and they did. I showed up on time and waited another 40 minutes. On leaving I spoke with the person running the desk, and suggested, politely and without rancor, that when they see anyone waiting will be subject to a wait greater than a half hour or so they might consider approaching that person and advising them that it will be a significantly longer wait before Bird's can cut his/her hair.

This suggestion is based on the supposition that the customer's time is valuable, and that courtesy to the people who support your business is a classier move than screwing them out of their time and then taking their money.

The person I spoke to listened, and responded to the effect that sometimes things are a little hard to predict.

I would suggest to you that this is not the best response. A better response would be along the lines of We're sorry. We realize you were penciled in for approximately 40 minutes before you actually got your haircut, and we apologize for the delay. We appreciate your business and we know your time is important to you.

Tell me something. If you called up your own establishment and they told you it was busy but they'd be able to get to you in an hour, and you showed up as agreed and then waited forty more minutes, and then when you mentioned this was a problem and politely offered a solution to it and the staffer didn't even as much as apologize for the inconvenience, would you return to your own business again? No? Too big a bite out of your day for a haircut? A little too much attitude? If you, the owner or manager wouldn't, why should I?

Is arrogance part of your business plan? Man. Did you achieve whatever success you have by letting people steal your time like that?

Please, consider a more customer courteous approach toward scheduling. If you loosely schedule someone and things change, hey, I get it. Things happen. Like the three stylists who walked out, not to return, when I walked in and sat down. This was no mystery to your scheduling staff.

But don't give me a haircut and then give me another one. I only want one (1) haircut.

Thanks for listening.

Pros: Good haircuts

Cons: Get an advanced degree while you wait

The first time I got my hair cut at Birds I was really excited because I was paired up with Lindsey who is a wonderful stylist. I wanted desperately to get back in with her. The problem- you can't make an appt with a particular stylist so you basically have to stalk them, figure out their work schedule, try to coordinate your schedule with their schedule, and if you plan accordingly you could call an hour ahead and get your name placed on a "waiting list." After much frustration, I was not able to get back in with Lindsey. I ended up with someone other woman. This lady seemed totally distracted. As soon as I got in my car I had one of those, "Oh no, I just had a really bad haircut" moments. I went back to have her fix it but still didn't like the outcome. When I went to another stylist a month or two later she pointed out to me that my hair was a whole 2 inches longer on one side of my head than the other. Nice.

Let's just say that I've chosen to spend $15 extra for peace of mind.

Cons: Hipster-esque, can't make an appointment

I have spent 6 years in Austin getting $65 haircuts at Maximum FX (formerly on the drag, now in SOCO). My hair stylist there never left me disappointed, but she left my wallet emtpy. One day, I decided to try Stacy, since she was a friend of a friend. I went in with my fingers crossed, hoping and praying the entire time that I was not going to regret this decision for the next 5 weeks. Bird's was pretty new at the time and I was absolutely certain that no one could even come close to my top dollar salon. I was so wrong. I have not been back to the other salon since. I won't go to anyone but Stacy and every time I leave her chair and walk out the door, I feel ready to take on the world. I always get complimented on my hair. Stacy is a genius, a real artist, and should get paid more for what she does.

Really disappointed on the customer service, my stylist was talking more to the person sitting next to me than paying attention to cutting my hair. I felt like a sheep getting sheared, the lady doing the cutting was not happy to be cutting this head of hair. Got the feeling that if you're not wearing vans and covered in tattoos, you're not the clientele they're looking to serve.

I'd rather sit out the top 40's at supercuts than go through this again.

So today I took my 8yr old son and his friend to Birds Barber Shop on S.Lamar. He was so excited to go to this really cool barber shop. We had checked it out online, and driven by it numerous times. It just seems like a neat place to get your hair cut. So we go in and get on the list, the orange haired girl at the counter says "thirty minute wait" we are ok with that, even though there are only 2 guys ahead of us, and about 5 more came in after we did. About 15 minutes goes by and the 2 guys ahead of us go and get their cuts. My son goes up and asked the girl where the restroom is, and proceeds to go and is out in about 3 minutes. While he is standing around the corner from the front counter looking at the cool stuff all over the place they take 3 of the guys that came in after us. I walk up to the orange haired young lady and ask her why she skipped right over my kid! She said " we are too busy to wait on kids to come out of the bathroom"! I told her that he was standing less than a foot from her and all she had to do was turn her head! And all she can say to me is that he should have been ready! At that point I was ready to walk out! But seeing the disappointment in my sons face, I could not do it. So we waited for another 20 minutes for him to get his hair cut. Finally he got his hair cut, and he asked the stylist if he was going to trim his bangs, as they are hanging in his face, to wit he replied, if you want to look like a dork then I will cut them! Needless to say my son now does not want his bangs trimmed! And hardly got a haircut at all! Needless to say we are very disappointed with the over all service we received at Birds and will never return. It was made very clear that they are not kid friendly!

I would not recommend Bird's to anyone who wants a haircut. If you are looking for a trendy location, with free beer and music and don't give a damn about how your hair turns out then this place is for you. My stylist walked away from my chair, WITH MY HAIR IN HER HAND, to tell a co-worker to change the radio channel. If a handful of hair didn't fall out then, a bunch did when she hacked through my hair like a machette. If that wasn't bad enough, she told me that she didn't think my suggestion for a haircut was good and did what SHE WANTED. After the cut she suggested I cut off all of my hair since I have to wear it in a ponytail for work. If I wanted an opinion I would have gone to a shrink, I just wanted my hair cut like I WANTED IT CUT. I was left with an uneven cut that took all of 5-8 minutes to do.

The Moral: Save the extra $15 and get your hair hacked up a Supercuts. At least you know what you a getting and not expecting something you won't get.

The haircut was okay, I got charged a lot more than my husband & he has a lot more hair. No one offered me a beer, (maybe it's only offered to men). My husband gets offered a beer there (we go seperately). Very product pushy, to the point of. "I really don't need this." Don't recommend if your a woman.

I walked into Bird's with horrible, scraggly. frizzy, gross, wicked witch hair and walked out with the best haircut ever! I didn't even call ahead and was in Lindsey's chair in about ten minutes. I wasn't exactly sure what kind of cut I wanted, but had a vague idea. She gave me the guidance I needed and was very helpful. Before this, I hadn't had my hair professionally cut in like, 2 years because of bad experiences at other salons. I had such a good experience there, now I want to get my hair cut everyday! My husband had had his hair cut there twice before and I loved it so that's what gave me the nerve to go in the first place. I'm so glad that I did! Hooray Bird's!

I loved the environment, people were great, the music, the location (north)... however I went there for hair cut... a stylish one, and I got something terrible... I can't wait till it grows again to fix it.... . I was seen by a lady that did not have any advice for me... I asked her what would look good on my type of face, and she kept on saying - that is ok, do you want this?, do you want that? I wanted her expert advise and she did not have anything to tell me.. so I tried to explain what I wanted, she did not get it and cut my hair in a very weird style. I needed assertiveness and I think she ken less than me. I don't recommend it to anybody unless you want to have free beer and spend a good time... don't let them touch your hair unless you have a very good detailed explanation of what you want... don't let t them try their little creativeness with you

For thrice the price, you get about the same quality as a less-hip joint down the street -plus a free can of cheap beer and some trendier mags for your last-minute hair ideas. Like the other low-end chains, it really depends on who you get. If you know of someone good, you'll likely be happy. If you just walk in at the mercy of fate, you're really taking your chances an a not-so-great cut. I've been twice: one stylist was talented, the other made me never want to go back.

I went yesterday with my boyfriend for him to get a haircut. It was quite busy when we got there, so were not surprised at the 40 min wait. The place seems really neat and relaxed. I will say,we did wait longer than the 40 mins we were advised. At one point while there were chairs full of people the stylist took smoke breaks and even just stood around talked to one another. Once he finally got his turn for his cut, he showed the guy a picture of what he wanted. The stylist was very honest and realistic about being able to do that cut on his hair. After he was done, he gave my man a great hair cut that was very trendy and user friendly. I advised him to keep going, but to call ahead to put his name on the list.

For a whilethere I thought you had to be a rock star to go to Bird's. I have a job and my haircut isn't that interesting, really, so I don't know why I pulled into the lot on my way home from work. Maybe its cuz the waiting room was empty, i guess. anyway, this guy- i forget his name- he cut my hair and it was great. i mean, as great as my haircut gets... parted on the side and actually combed. so yeah, you dont have to be in some band to go to this place

the only time i have to get my haircut is on the weekend and for two weekends in a row i went to birds and there was a 400 hour wait. finally i came in during a weekday (night actually) and it took like 5 minutes to get in a chair. the girl was hot too. so i'm happy now and pro-birds again. i hate lone star though, but whatever.

Sooo, i just have to say that i HEART Bird's Barbershop ... I am sick of paying more than $60 for a trim and hate going to chop shops (I've walked out of those places with some BAD cuts, not worth the risk!). I'd recommend this place to any of my lady friends.

I enjoy Birds Barbershop for many reasons. I am always confused with what to do with my hair. Almost every stylist has cut my hair and it always turns out great! I can't remember a time when I liked my hair more! I appreciate the wonderful staff for- dare I say it- thinking outside the box. My hair has a professionals touch now! Unlike the cheap places where they do the same haircut on everyone.
Plus, I rarely have to wait a long time. If I do have to sit for a while, I catch up on my reading with a cold beer! That's great! I hope this review moves more people to head over to Birds Barbershop. I called ahead and got put on the list. I recommend that.

Plus, I rarely have to wait a long time. If I do have to sit for a while, I catch up on my reading with a cold beer! That's great! I hope this review moves more people to head over to Birds Barbershop. I called ahead and got put on the list. I recommend that.

Pros: good magazines

Cons: NOTHING!!

I have been to this shop 4 times now and will never go back again. The shop has many value added items such as the atmosphere and music but what I need is a stylist that will give me the cut I ask for. I need a regular barbershop without all the fancy cuts. JUST TRIM MY HAIR -CUT THE ENDS NOT TO GIVE ME MORE ISSUES TO DEAL WTH EVERY DAY WITH MY UNCONTROLABLE HAIR. I have vists have consisted of 3 different stylists and they all want to do things to my hair that I DO NOT WANT. Razor cuts would be fine but not with the dull blades they use.

Birds is a much needed addition to the ever expanding Austin landscape. This locally owned, Lonestar serving, fuseball having barbershop is so fun. I have been to Birds several times and always walked away happy. I have to admit as a woman I was scared to get my haircut at a barbershop. But everytime I have left happy as ever. At $39 for a womans cut and only $19 for guys i am a loyal fan.

I love Birds Barbershop because I can get a cut and not have to pay the norm for shampoo and style. I wash my hair daily and dont need to pay for something I already have. I thought I found a great stylist in Allie only to find out after my 3rd visit with her she is tempermental and will cut your hair the way SHE THINKS IT SHOULD BE CUT.

I came in yesterday and Lindsay cut all my hair off. Before it was long and plain now its shorter and full of life and I feel so beautiful! Birds is such an awesome vibe. Ive been to the more upscale salons and always felt uneasy but I felt right at home at birds with my lonestar and great conversation. Lindsay Rocks! I know ill be a lifelong customer at birds.

Stacy (yes that's her real name) is amazing. I just started getting my hair done by her and not only is this lady qualified, she's gifted. I just went blonde for the first time, I was a little nervous and didn't really know what I wanted. I let Stacy make suggestions for me and sure enough, her intuition did me good. She suggested I keep a little of my natural color at the base of my neck, and I totally put my hair in her capable hands and now my color looks complex and natural. I was outraged when I read that Apocalypse guy's review. I've worked at hair removal salons before and if you have skin that has been untouched by a razor long enough to have a thick, coarse beard, some irritation is to be expected. My experiences at Birds have always been at the very least pleasant, sterile and left me completely satisfied with the work. All I can say is that guy was whack, and I plan to go to Stacy for long long time to come.

I'm very disappointed to see the negative review for Stacey. It appears the gentleman was too insecure to admit to her that his skin my be on the sensitive side, which really doesn't give her much of a chance.

My experience with her was absolutely top notch and I highly recommend her to any guy. She is very thorough in assessing your skin type and shaving habits. She is also very attentive to your level of comfort. I found myself amazed at how relaxed I was with a total stranger poised over my neck with a razor.

In short, Stacey rules. Give her your business.

Birds is amazing! Allie cut my hair and did an incredible job. My hair has always been heavy and hard to style. She layered it, got the weight out of it, and gave it great style that it DESPERATELY needed! I LOVED it...enough to come back 1 week later and get my hair colored too!

Bird's rocks.... cool atmosphere, cool people, great haircuts....you can't go wrong!

Me and my boyfriend celebrated our 1yr anniversary this past week. Looking forward to a big night out on the town. We were much in need of a fresh new look so i decided we should check out bird's. I got a fantastic ladybird (the girls cut), while he opted for the rock star (guys cut). We both walked out looking paparrazzi ready. The photo booth pictures tell it all.

I called bird's on a Saturday, and asked if I could get a shave that day. She said, "Sure," but when I got there, the answer was different. The guy at the counter was apologetic, though, and gave me some $5 off coupons, so I returned yesterday. Full disclosure: I have a coarse beard and sensitive skin.

Oh the warm towels and the fancy cream. Very nice. What then followed was a 45 minute horror show of razor burn, cuts, and overall poor judgement by me continuing to sit there as some lady hacked at me and rubbed more soap in my wounds. Why did I sit there and just take it? I don't know! The first thing I did when I got home was shave a few of the many spots she missed and marvel at my 'new' face, which looked like it had been peppered with a shotgun blast of rock salt. Here's a lesson I never learn: when somebody sells you a service, all that you know is that they want to be paid for it. there is no reason to believe that they possess any qualifications.

What I'm left with is tortured skin and a slight but sick fear that my many cuts exposed be to any number of diseases which I no longer presume aren't floating around in bird's. I will never get another straight razor shave, and certainly never at Bird's, and most certainly never from Stacy (at least, that's the name she wrote on the card).

"So how'd you get into hairstlying?" "Chickenpox." "Huh?"

Such conversations seem commonplace at this not-so-common barber shop. A friend accompanied me for my first visit, and at the door, he exlaimed, "Free Wi-Fi?" then turned around to retrieve his laptop from the car. That and the foosball table kept him busy during my entire well-pampered salon experience. My stylist, Michael, took good care of me. And everyone else around him.

"Why do the dirty songs always come on when kids are around?" he wondered as a pink blur scampered around in the mirror behind me. I put my glasses back on. A little girl was running around the shop. She didn't seem to notice, and listening carefully, I couldn't find the dirty lyrics my stylist, Micheal, was talking about. The song was skipped.

And I skipped through the door feeling lighter, my hair smelling yummy, and with an invitation in my hand to Birds' first concert. I was sad I couldn't make it, but I'll be back to Birds soon.

I just wanted to say that Brenda did a wonderful job on me last Saturday. Although she cut it short as I requested, it is still manageable. Where I have been going the last couple of years, they never could do both. I'll be back.

I wish I could get a straight razor shave at Birds every other day. What a fantastic feeling. Jacquie is an awesome barber!

After a year of being butchered by low cost, grandad barbers, I've finally found a reasonalbly priced shop that understands what I want from a hair cut. Despite the fact that Lauren didnt have the necessary clippers to do my fade, she did a fantastic job by hand with shears. Wow!! It is the best cut I've had in ages. Birds definitely fills a void in the salon community is Austin!!

Are you tired of crappy haircuts? I was too so I tried this place. Everything about it is great - the haircut, the magazines, the music, the giant mural, the haircutters (I'm sure there's a better word for this). Seriously, I like the haircut (thanks, Laura) and the place beats the crap out of all the other places I've been.
