Ok, I have to admit that usually when someone suggests Thai for lunch, my immediate reaction is the dreaded groan - I mean who wants overly oily Pad Thai and imitation meats that just don't fit the bill when it comes to eating Thai?

Tony Thai totally changed my outlook. Walking into the restaurant, the decor was just amazing. Being located in Chinatown, I was surprised to see such a modern ambiance, something totally different from the cheesy asian decorations that typically are found in the restaurants on Bellaire.

The food, to say the least, was amazing - it was such a different experience to actually experience GOOD Thai food - I am definitely a Thai food convert now that I've eaten at Tony Thai.

My boyfriend and I had been looking for a decent Thai restaurant for a while in the Bellaire area. Before, we used to go to Thai Spice, but then we found this place. Tony Thai has such a contemporary atmosphere. We walked in to the place thinking the food would be really expensive based on the decor, but it wasn't! Everything was reasonably priced and tasted better than we expected. The pad thai is delish, the green and red curry is exceptional, and I love their Thai tea. It complements any meal, especially their spicier ones like red curry. The only negative thing I have to say is that some things are almost too spicy for my tastes. If you want a fun place to celebrate a birthday come here. They play this funky, funny song for you recorded by the owner himself and plop crazy mad hatterish hats on your head. It's a hoot. My boyfriend and I go here every time we're in the Bellaire area now. If it's too far for you, I heard they also have a second location up north by Willowbrook mall that serves sushi AND Thai food there. You can' really go wrong with Tony Thai.

Pros: upscale atmosphere, authentic Thai experience

Cons: inconsistent service, busy during peak hours

Tony Thai is not your typical Chinatown Thai restaurant (think: strip mall with linoleum floors, greasy tabletops and diner chairs). One of the most upscale restaurants in the area, Tony Thai's owners spent big bucks to make this place look nice. But it's not just the decor or the ambience that make Tony Thai a great place to take your friends - it's the food. This is authentic Thai the way I like it. The papaya salad with the lime chili dressing is one of my favorites, as is the deep fried fish with garlic sauce (an entire fish, artfully arranged on a large platter). The staples here, the tom yum soup is spicy, so beware. The pad thai won my mom's heart and she insists its the best she's had in town. I also love the beef Tiger Cry, tender sliced bbq beef with a sweet tangy chili sauce that's melt in your mouth. The Thai iced coffee and tea perfectly complement your meal and while you're at it, don't forget to order a mango and sticky rice dessert. Service isn't always the best but the ambience and food make up for any shortcomings.

Pros: One of the nicest, cleanest Thai restaurants in town

Cons: Service can be slow

I loved the fried fish we got. I could drink up the sauce! We also got the pad prik and pad thai which came out soon after we ordered and was very satisfying. I would recommend the place to anyone who wants to try good Thai food. Tony Thai was a great choice!
