A friend of mine was having her going away party at Kona Grill and invited approximately 20 people. When I arrived, the majority of our party was already seated outdoors (on the patio) eating and drinking. I sat down and waited to be served. The waitress approached our table and my friend had to remind her of the margarita she ordered but never received and the waitress replied with "oh. I don't think I ever brought that out." When she asked me what I wanted to order I said a water and then she immediately asked me for my ID. I told her I just wanted a water, not a drink, and she told me I still needed to show ID. I am 20 and was planning on eating food while my friends provided Kona with plenty of business buying tons of drinks. The waitress proceeded to tell me I was not allowed to be on the patio after 9pm because it was a bar. I told her because they served food and advertised their establishment as a restaurant that I should be able to stay. I asked for a manager, hoping for a more competent employee. He explained to me that they had had an incident in which underage customers were served alcohol and the restaurant had to fire their bartender. Sounds like the restaurant's problem to me if they were dumb enough to serve underage kids. The manager told me I was allowed to sit inside. What is the difference? Food and drinks are served both inside and out on the patio. He did not offer to move our party's table indoors and explained that the rule of 21+ after 9pm was a mix of restaurant/TABC policy. Apparently (as stated by the manager), TABC has such little confidence in Kona Grill that they continue to check in on the restaurant and "test" them by creating underage drinking scenarios to make sure the restaurant is complying. The manager did not offer me a giftcard or a free meal but instead told me where I was and was not allowed to sit. I told him he just lost a customer and left.

On 12/03/09 my party of 13 people went to Kona Grill at the Domain for Happy Hour. The temperatures were freezing outside, the outside heaters were not working at full capacity. We asked to be seated inside the dining area and management/and hostess refused to accommodate us. We were told Happy Hour customers had to sit outside as the dining area was not a Happy Hour area location for discounted drinks. We explained many of us would be having dinner, again the Kona Grill refused us - so we called McCormick & Schmidt, they told us to come down the block and they'd take care of us (and they did). Kona Grill obviously didn't want our business. I'd not recommend this place ever again.

I recently went to Kona because my 7 year old son wanted a sushi roll. I was excited because I used to love the Diablo Shrimp. When I asked about the shrimp I was told it was no longer on the menu. I was disappointed but I just ordered some coffee and let my son enjoy. I was quickly approached by the Manager Scott Mathews and he was asking about me wanting the shrimp. He said that has been off the menu for a year. I told him no big deal to not worry about it. He said they didn't have the ingredients to make that sauce but he would go back and play around with some things to try and get it as close as possible. He came back with a huge plate of Shrimp, very elegently presented. It tasted amazing. The then said that the waitress had asked him if he could do anything. He then presented me with his business card and said if I was ever coming in to email him and he would personally go to the grocery store to get the ingredients needed to make this. WOW... All this to get me an appetizer that is no longer on the menu. I don't remember the waitress' name but between her and the Manager I have never had service like this anywhere. I just want to say thank you. To top it off he came out and said the shrimp dish was on the house. If that is not going above and beyond, I don't know what is. Thank you thank you thank you...

per other reviews, maybe it's not the best food in the domain but i like the fact that I can get sushi and creme brulee at the same place. it's great for a crowd that wants different things or if you're indecisive like me and not just going for the sushi. again, i'm sure there are better sushi places in austin but i'd recommend if you're an amateur like me and just like the veggie rolls.

I told my husband that we were going to drive north to a place that had a good reputation and as soon as we sat down we knew that this was going to be a place we would walk out of - we were not acknowledged for more than 5 minutes after being seated. We were outside on the patio and it was about 65 degrees outside - very pleasant - but they had all of the outdoor fans on high with the fan lights on as well - it was very windy and distracting. We asked out waiter to turn off the fan above us (pull the string idiot!) and he said that all of the fans in the area were on the same breaker. We got up and left and walked over to Jasper's where we had never been before - take my advice and go to Jasper's - promptly seated, waited upon in a timely manner and the food was fabulous!

I've been here several times now. Their happy hour prices are great; however, only cover a limited array of menu items. Also, the food isn't fantastic, but it was okay. The service isn't the best, but again, it was okay. BUT THE LAST TIME I was there, and probably the last time I will EVER go there, was the worst. We arrived around and were seated at 11:30 pm. We were ignored for HALF AN HOUR despite our "miss...excuse me...miss" and our "sir...excuse me...sir" several times. I was getting incredibly agitated. At PRECISELY midnight, I was approached by one of the waitresses who asked "have you been helped?" And I replied "I've been here for a half hour and no, have not been helped." And her reply FLOORED ME. She said "I'm so sorry, but our kitchen closes at midnight," and walked away. They should consider upgrading on the food (outside of happy hour, the price for what they serve is ridiculous) and training their employees better (or hire someone qualified to work in public).

I went to Kona Grill today for the first time and will never go back. The sushi roll I ordered was rubbery and the sushi I ordered tasted like a dirty refrigerator and was separating. Anyone who has ever had sushi before knows that fish that separates is stale and possibly toxic. I brought this to the managers attention who initially got defensive saying that was typical of the "knife technique" and is common in toro (a prime part of the fish and generally a very expensive one). Um, not.
He later came back with "new" sushi (which was a bit better but not by much) and offered to give us a dessert. Very nice that he went out of the way for us but the creme brulee we had tasted like an omelet.
Won't be going back there....ever. Shame, the service was friendly and attentive, but the food was...blech....

HURRAH! General Manager Scott Matthews is Back in action. My wife and I had a superb experience at Konas last night. Konas signature dish, the "Macadamia Nut Chicken" is once again the best it has ever been. No doubt G.M. Scott Matthews is cracking that whip in the kitchen. All the food we experienced last night was very well prepared and delicious. We will continue to visit Kona and refer all our family and friends.

J.Villarreal 11/7/09

I have been a fan of KONA GRILL ever since they first opened here in Austin. The food was always first rate. My wife and I love the fact that they are very close to our neighborhood. I don't know if "Scott Matthews" is still the manager there, but he would always make sure we were very well taken care of, always very accommodating and always paid attention to the customers. I have not seen Scott in a while and do not know if he is still there.
However, my wife and several friends had dinner there last night and the Macadamia Not Chicken was not good. The chicken was very hard to cut even with a knife. Almost as if the chicken was pre-cooked, set aside and then reheated when an order came through. We did have the waiter return the dish and ordered another one. Unfortunately the second order was no better. The waiter was genuinely apologetic and seemed to really care. However, what should have happened is that the Manger should have been notified and should have come to the table and tried to make amends. It did not happen. As a result we will be very hesitant about going back again.
YOU KONA GUYS AT THE CORPOATE LEVEL NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT IS GOING ON WITH YOUR GRILL HERE IN AUSTIN.

it was suggested i try the sushi and drinks here for happy hour. you could only get happy hour if you sat at the patio or bar area so my date and i sat at the bar. the bartenders ruined our evening! terribly slow service, acted as if they were doing us a favor by serving us. the drinks absolutely sucked! the sushi happy hour was very, very, limited(i think 3 rolls). DO NOT SIT AT THE BAR. DO NOT ORDER COCKTAILS HERE!
the only positive thing i can say is that they had little hamburgers that tasted good.

The drinks at this place are less than PAR. Not only are they expensive, but no pride goes into making them. The crowds vary from upscale to students. I found the atmosphere enjoyable. I wish I could have brought my bartender from Trulocks to this place. The food is good but not exceptional for the price. I would recommend this place to a friend only so that he could compare it to others like it.

I love this place - I moved into the Domain not too long ago and before that I didn't even know that they existed but apparently it's a chain restaraunt. The theme is grill hawaiin food and it's awesome. The ambient is always upbeat and fun, but I do tend to only go during happy hour so maybe that's why haha. Also you should know that when you go during happy hour a lot their drinks and appetizers are half price! Crazy good food in a fun place for a crazy good price. Highly Recommended.

I want to like Kona Grill, I've gone 3 times now and even ordered the most basic food in the hopes to find soemthing good...but I can't. The macadamia chicken, any of the sushi, pepperonia pizza and numerous appetizers...all sub par. Not good flavor, not good quality and does not live up to the price of the meal.

Sure you can sit on the cool deck and get tipsy drinking mediocre drinks but it won't cover the bad food. Service is ok, not well seasoned servers but nice people.

6 of us went this past Saturday and we all decided that was the last attempt to try and like this place. Sorry Kona, your food is gross. Change the menu and your cooks. Yuk.

I don't recommend eating here at all. The food is boring and service is slow on the patio. Their drinks are weak, walk to Joe DiMaggio's for happy hour for some serious alcohol like greygoose martini for $5 during happy hours, red wines (la cream-pinot noir), white wines(la crema-chardonnay) and many specials from 3-6 p.m Everyday!

A friend took me to lunch yesterday (Feb. 9) at Kona Grill in the Domaine. What a sophisticated, serene atmosphere! The waiter, Jason, was cordial and professional. I decided to order the pulled pork sandwich, something I don't usually order, but it sounded delicious. Beautiful presentation, some of the worst food I have had in such an upscale restaurant. The sandwich had small bits of pork in overly sweet sauce. The main filler was skin and fat. I couldn't eat it. The slaw was so drenched in mayo dressing, it was nauseating. The huge thick onion ring was barely passable. When I ordered the ginger peach tea, a bottle and glass of ice was delivered -- more expensive, no refills. This was the kind of meal I would have sent back -- except I was being treated and didn't want to spoil the ambiance. I may go back and give Kona a second chance, but I definitly won't order the pork sanwich. It should be pulled from the menu.

I went there to have a drink during happy hour. Someone had told me that this was a great spot to go to for sushi, especially during happy hour (I'm from San Diego, and was dying to find a good non-expensive sushi place).

It was gross. The happy hour prices (which were great) were limited to a certain area that was open to outside and there were flies everywhere. The sushi was unimpressive, you may as well have taken tuna mixed it with mayo rolled it into a maki and called it sushi. The drinks were cheap which is great, but if that's the only thing it has going for it, it doesn't make up for it's lack of everything everywhere else. The "look" of the place was sort of generic, nothing boasts of uniqueness, it's very BLAH and boring. Maybe it's trying to play it "safe" so it can be everything to everybody, or ... I dunno, if you don't go here, you won't feel bad. You're not missing out on a good time or anything else. The only thing this place has going for it is that their happy hour prices are really really good, but what you have to endure for it is, just too much.

Ok we went to this hard to find restaurant in the domain (by Macy's) on the weekend and it was great. Great upbeat enviorment. Nice set up. I love going out to dinner and having choices. This place has a lot: Sushi...not for me, Ribs, chicken, pasta , fish, pizzas and meatloaf?....When we were joking about the large selection our server Danielle even told us she could check and see if they could make us a Huge hamburger they normally serve for lunch.....Some of my friends love sushi, and I don't. This is a great place for all of us to go out together. I had the baby back ribs...Loved them. My wife had the Kona Grill Chicken...Really tasty for chicken! Our friends had the sushi thay said it was good...The kept saying that it was not as good as Kenichi or others (They are foodies)....I asked them to think about this....Here is this huge restaurant with all these choices....What would the chicken or ribs taste like at their sushi bars.....They agreed. Nice wine list although for Austin it is a little lacking but lots of choices by the glass. Very busy bar and patio..the server told us it was their reverse happy hour ....We are going to have to check it out...Service was good, dinner was great, wine list OK. Dessert was terrific we had a Macadamia Nut Pie. It was relly good..I never heard of it before. Not a fancy place, just a good place to have a great meal with friends...Something for everyone...The only dissapointing event was the parking it was raining and we all got a little wet....We will be back.....Went back tonight for happy hour.. busy place...need to get early...filled up fast at 9pm...great happy hour prices.....The eggrolls were fantastic...the sauce was killer....wife had chicken satay...a little boring for me but healthy....Sake Bombers......huge beer (like a quart) and sake for 6 bucks!!!

I chose this place based on some of the reviews, and I have to say I was disappointed. The food was expensive, and very lackluster for what I was getting. We tried to order various things off the menu, like the rolls, salads, steak, and seafood. The steak was overcooked, the seabass was oversalted, and overgrilled, the salmon was a bit charred. Overall, not a very good food experience. I hope the other restaurants in the Domain aren't like this! Maybe you are better off staying away from the chain restaurants, and sticking with something more local.

Cons: Expensive for what you get

.

We took our team out for lunch and had a pretty big table. Our waitress was PHENOMENAL! She ensured our drinks were full and we had everything we needed. The food was fantastic and everyone left with a pleased pallet. I will be going there again!!! The calamari ROCKED!!!!

An otherwise-pleasant family outing was all but ruined by the less-than-less-than-mediocre sushi offered at the Domain's Kona Grill.
Although the atmosphere and rather extensive menu seemed promising (strict vegetarians have very few options including and limited to pizza, which, in view of the sushi, should actually be considered very lucky), the food was a stomach turning embarrassment.
As voracious sushi-eaters, my party and I were stunned that any accredited (and, from the other reviews, acclaimed) restaurant could produce sushi that we couldn't choke down. To say that the sushi was boring or underwhelming would be euphemistic. My brother-in-law had to expend effort just to keep it down. No exaggeration.
The inedible sushi aside, though, the service was attentive, and the repast was certainly unforgettable.

Pros: The bathroom was clean and readily available.

Cons: The sushi made me want to die. No, really.

If the food at happy hour reflects the restaurtant, then I would have to say it is not for "foodies." A lot of fillers and grains make up the happy hour menu. Maybe try the sushi?

I was wary to try Kona Grill because of a review I read recently. After our experience, my husband and I would have to strongly disagree with the critic who wrote that article! We ate there on Sunday afternoon, around 4pm. The hostess was polite and sat us in front of the kitchen windows. We were promptly greeted by a female server who was bubbly and recommended a few things from each column of the menu. I ordered the sushi sampler and my husband ordered the ahi after we enjoyed calamari and some cocktails from the bar. Everything was delicious and served with excellent timing. We've had great food before but were stunned at the reasonable prices at Kona...$12 for a perfectly cooked ahi filet! Amazing!
What stood out the most was the service we recieved. She refilled our drinks before we had to ask, she recommended entrees and an appetizer that were great and made us feel welcome and appreciated by engaging in conversation. After my husband expressed concern about the amount of liquor in his dessert drink, she promptly fixed the problem with an apology and a smile.
If this is the kind of service that Kona Grill, I would have to say that the critic was extremely mistaken. I will return to Kona Grill kowing that I'll be taken care of!!!!

My husband and I decided to try out this new trendy restaurant a few weeks ago. We read reviews online before we went and were a little worried based on past reviews. I would have to say that I disagree with a majority of the food snobs writting these reviews here in Austin. People have said that it's "chainy" but it's a chain restaurant, so why would you expect anything different? I understand that Austin is very loyal to their local restaurants, which are very good, but for a chain based out of Scottsdale I'd say their food begs to differ. My husband ordered the seabass and I ordered the Macadamia nut chicken which was based on the recommendation of our wonderful server who gave us excellent service. After all the bad reviews about service that we have read about Kona Grill we were a little concerned about what to expect, but the service that we recieved was more than excellent! Happy hour does get a little loud in the bar area, but it looks as if it was more of a "clubby" happy hour for college kids that look like they are barely legal to drink! We loved the ambiance in the dining room with the fish tank and the romantic lighting. If I could compain about one thing it would be our interaction with the management staff, our appetizer and food came out pretty much at the same time when a manager(white, mid twenties, brown hair) came over to see how our meal was we told him we would have like to enjoyed our appetizer more before we got our food, he seemed confused and sidetracked, he didn't acknowledge our complaint and told us to "enjoy our meal," I would go back, and I would recommend this restaurant, their menu is different and refreshing from the usual tex-mex restaurants that everyone raves about in Austin! It seems as if everyone in Austin thinks they are a food critic, don't take their advice, try something new!

I ate at Kona Grill the other night for the first time and I loved it! The service was exceptionally friendly, and each item recommended by the server was greatly appreciated. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and our service was on-point and on-time from the moment we arrived.
The seabass, marinated in a miso-sake mix, tasted like butter in my mouth. My friend tried the macadamia nut chicken, which was equally as delicious. I thought the price for each of the items I tried were inexpensive and well worth it.
After dinner I proceeded to slide over to the bar for an excellent reverse happy hour from 9-11. You just cant beat Sake-bombers for 5 bucks a pop. This isnt just some measly sake-bomb either; this is the large bottle of Kirin with a full caraf of warm sake.
Kona Grill is my new favorite restaurant, not just because of it's friendly service and resonably priced food, but because of it's incredible happy hour and fun atmosphere.
I will definately be back in there soon.

My family and I visisted last night. Upon arriving we were not greeted by the hostess (white, short, glasses, unprofessional attire) look at the front, who seemed only interested in talking to a server. When we finally got her attention she had the look of boredom or as if we were annoying her. She passed us off to another hostess (a young black girl) who walked us to our table, put the menus down and walked away. Did not say a word to us. We were then greeted by the stuffiest server we have ever encountered, Christy. She was boring to say the least. No personality and it seemed as if she was too busy to really take care of us. She asked us if it was our first time, which it was, and then asked if we wanted something to drink. Made no reccomendations, again, probably because she was in a hurry. The food was outstanding though. The Macademia Nut Chicken was incredible. We did notice a male, Indian/Hispanic server, next to us who seemed to be having a lot of fun at his table, and his guests seemed to be really enjoying their time. When he refilled our waters and tea for us he did ask us how everything was and told us to make sure that we saved room for the Key Lime Pie. We asked his name and we will certainly ask for him the next time we come back.
Hostess: No Star
Server-Christy: One Star
Food: Four Star.
They just need to get their staff on par with their food, at least some of their staff.

Went in for a beer for the first time at The Domain location in Austin, Texas this evening. Took forever for any of the bar service people to wait on me. I had to really get their attention. Once I got their attention, the bartender (female) started to give me an attitude. Horrible service to a first time customer! Then one of customers sitting next to me stuck his nose in my wallet telling me to tip the bartender whom gave me lousy service and also had an attitude. I think this guy was a young car salesman with a big mouth and a big ego. I let him tip the bartender whom gave me lousy service to satisfy his ego.

My next beer went a little better, a different bartender, paid attention that my glass needed to be refilled. I tipped him 100%.

I will go back another time for a beer only at happy hour. I cannot trust the service yet to a dining experience.

I went to Kona Grill a few nights ago with a friend. Overall, it was a good experience - I liked the setting and the atmosphere, and the food was great, but our waitress was not the best. I had the lemongrass-crusted halibut ($20.25), which came with a large serving of really good white cheddar mashed potatoes. We also had the turtle cheesecake, which was good but nothing special, and I had a chocolate martini ($8). During the meal, I had first ordered regular tea, but then asked for the flavored tea when I needed a refill. When we got the bill, I noticed that I had been charged $2.15 for the regular tea AND $3.50 for the flavored tea, which I thought was a bit ridiculous - I figured they would just charge me for the flavored tea since I had only had one glass of the regular tea. Also, the waitress seemed to be rushing us out, even though it was only around 9pm when we finished eating. I'm not sure why the service was so poor, because we went on a weeknight, and it was not at all crowded, even though I had made reservations just in case. So, I do recommend the restaurant because of the food and the atmosphere, but good luck getting good service!

This place was a bit of a snoozefest. The "sushi" was just your typical tuna and salmon, nothing really to write home about. The grilled chicken salad was boring boring boring. It was packed, which is typical, it's new and the Domain is new, but it really wasn't a very special experience, and for the price paid for the meal, it was a bit much for what was offered.
