This is just a perfect place to relax. They have great coffee in here, I really enjoy their iced coffee, and its the best. There can be a lot of people in here so be warned.

I recall with fondness the caffeine buzz due to my my average 2.75 per-visit drink consumption at Catalina. I went there with one main intention: to have an amazing coffee experience. I didn't come to make friends with the baristas, I

This coffee shop on Washington is a great addition to the scene there. Instead of a pretentious coffee shop, you get quality coffee with baristas who know what they are doing!

I got a simple iced coffee, but my friends got a french press coffee and a cookie with pistachio, chocolate and raspberries. They have cozy music and a chill atmosphere.

Adequate selection of books to choose from, but no laptop plugs, which I was saddened to learn had been removed. But I do think that is it a nice change of pace from the Starbucks shop where there are several people taking up chairs/plugs for hours on end!

All in all, a great place to have a fabulous cup of coffee!

By far, Catalina's Coffee is the most tasty and delicious coffee in Houston. I literally am driving 20 minutes from my house to pick up a cup 3-4 times a week. I love it. The only comparison is some of the delicious coffee I have enjoyed in Europe. With that said, 20 minutes doesn't seem that far away :O) I love quality! Life is just too short to settle for less!

The "homemade" kopi luwak at Catalina is to die for. No bitterness and an exotic mingling of animal scents and deep mysterious chocolate overtones. one can detect hints of onion & canned corn kernels as well. Ask the owner or one of the excellent baristas to demonstrate the fermentation process of the finest of the fair trade coffee....one bean at a time!

Of the coffee houses that I have visited in Houston, Catalina by far has the best quality coffee. If you are looking for great tasting coffee that is made by baristas with experience and know how then this should be your first stop. I frequent Catalina and consistently they serve up excellent espresso.

They use different blends and origins of espresso so if you don't like how it tastes on one day I would definitely try again on another day. One of my favorite drinks is the Cortado which I believe is equal parts espresso and milk.

The shop itself has a nice coffee shop ambiance to it, nothing out of the ordinary but it does display some outstanding local art by artist Kelley Devine.

If there is anything I don't like about Catalina it would be that they close at 8 pm. Sometimes too it's a little on the dark side, especially in the evening. Which is good for nice close conversations but not so great for trying to read a good book.

I noticed there are a number of bad reviews here about how the baristas treat the customers but I have never had any problems. In fact most are very friendly and happy to help you out.

Pros: Coffee, service

Cons: hours

The coffee would have been perfect had it not included a heaping dose of attitude from the guy serving it. What a jerk.

Pros: Coffee is good

Cons: People who work there

Had an OUTSTANDING breve cubano this afternoon. A real coffee revelation. And I appreciate that it was on the house after buying a pound of beans. Great place to read quietly for 20 minutes before continuing with the day.

What a cool place. Just the right balance of trendy and sophisticated and local neighborhood charm. Max, the owner, really loves his business and his crew really knows their stuff and seems to enjoy being at work.

Even when business is brisk the service is always friendly and witty. Just FYI the Wi-Fi is free but this is not the kind of place to hang out like study hall. All the outlets are capped, but if you want to go somewhere and have top-notch coffee and enjoy good conversation or relax and read, there is not better place than Catalina Coffee.

I don't think it's quite fair to this jewel of an independent coffee house that the last two ppl have slammed this place because they can't sit on their laptops and use up electricity. You can't expect a small business to be happy with being abused by customers who expect to be treated like royalty for their purchase of a drip or a three to four dollar whatever. It costs money for you guys to sit there and write your books that will never get published or f@ck around on facebook or check your emails hoping you'll get a life sometime soon. It's extremely selfish that these people expect for a small business to foot the electricity bill and the space these people take up for other paying customers that are there for the coffee and not the free ride on their internet. Jeez, go to Starbucks if you want to surf the internet or your own house for that matter. Independent coffee shops don't need ignorant folks like you anyway. I do have to state that I do not work here nor any other coffee shop but I love coffee and am tired of people taking up the best spots in the house for HOURS AND HOURS ON END. Besides, I don't think anyone of these people realize that cords stretched out across the floor is a liability for the owner himself. Someone trips and breaks a leg, he gets sued not the laptop user. Please try to see it from another point of view and look past your own selfish bubble and try and see why someone would be covering the outlets. A business owner does not want to get rid of customers but a smart business owner has to cut costs especially with the economy the way it is.

Now, the coffee is good and these guys have obviously done their research. Go for the good coffee and not the free ride and you will be satified.

Unfortunately, I'm not much of a connoisseur when it comes to coffee drinks so I can't comment much on the quality of the drinks at Catalina Coffee. What I do know a little about, however, is business and customer service - a quality clearly not shared by the folks running the joint.

I sat down to drink my coffee and catch up on some emails when I noticed that all the power outlets had been covered since the last time I'd visited. I figured that maybe the outlets were faulty and that the problem would be resolved soon, so I asked the guys at the counter. I was shocked at their response, "people would just buy a cup of coffee and just hang out for three hours. And it wasn't real conducive to our business."

Seriously? At 6pm, the place was more than half empty. There was no line of frustrated folks waiting for tables, and based on what I learned of Catalina's idiotic and incompetent management today, there never should be.

I have never had a worse experience in a coffee shop than I did after going to Catalina's. My family is out of our house due to the hurricane. We went to Catalina because we heard they had wifi after the storm. The coffee was mediocre but they were providing a service and we gladly paid for it.

After about 90 min, an employee came to us and said "sorry guys, you've outstayed your welcome." Then, when I asked if he treated all customers this way he replied "you're not much of a customer. I'd just spent $30 in the last 2 days in this place. While no fortune, it is a lot for a place that makes money $3 at a time. I was dismayed. He was completely rude and made it where it became a confrontation in front of all the other customers. 3 other customers left with us.

I have never had such customer service anywhere in my life. As a small business owner.... I cannot believe someone so dependent on customer service would allow their employees to act in such a way.

Cons: terrible service. no flavor in mocha.

Catalina Coffee is a great little coffee shop in a renovated historic building on Washington Ave. With free wi-fi and great service, this place is my favorite spot to stop on my way in to work.

I highly recommend the iced coffee drinks- they're cold brewed, resulting in a super-smooth coffee taste. The iced mocha isn't overly sweet and you can actually *gasp* taste the coffee over the chocolate. The baristas are all really helpful if you have any questions or need a suggestion. (If the iced mocha wasn't enough of a suggestion for you, how about a ham & cheese croissant? Yum!)

Despite all of the new business on Washington, this place still retains a laid-back, neighborhood vibe. Kudos to Max and his crew for doing such a great job!

Pros: Great coffee, fast service, easy parking

We're not ones to pooh pooh a place because it's corporate or praise any independent because it's independent. We just love Catalina's coffee, the atmosphere and friendly service.

It's not a bad place to take a date after a nice dinner either. In addition to truly superior coffee, you can get a great dessert to go with it like chocolates or a cookie. They have ice cream and blended drinks we haven't tried yet as well as some tasty breakfast items and they have room to grow from there, not that they need to.

I also like to go there with my laptop to write and our 5 year old loves to have a snack there on the weekend.

The most delicious Mocha I've *ever* had! Excellent, friendly service and by far the best coffee in Houston. Inside a lovely renovated historical Washington Ave building. Bring your puter for the free wifi and you must try the Ice Cream!

In Short
Well suited to its Washington Avenue address, this independently owned coffeeshop retains its historic building's characteristic brickwork and crisp, architectural style. With a limited menu of bakery goods, the emphasis…
