For lunch on Friday, April 9, 2010, a friend and I visited "CHIC of Barcelona" at Preston and Forest in Dallas, Tx. This restaurant came to my attention by way of the Passport coupon book; CHIC was new addition to their Spring 2010 edition and I thought I'd check them out.

In the past, I have enjoyed many of the restaurants advertised in the Passport without any problem. Today at CHIC was different.

When it came time to pay for the bill, I went through my typical process of requesting the bill and handing the waiter my coupon. He graciously accepted and went to total the bill.

A couple of minutes later, he returned to tell me that the coupon was not valid for lunch. I looked at the coupon and there were no time nor date restrictions. On the back, it stated "Open for lunch and dinner!" After showing this to the waiter, he trotted off to the manager only to return to say that she would not accept the coupon. At this time, he offered that I speak to the manager and I quickly accepted.

This is when customer service started going down the drain...

Now that I've negated the "coupon not valid during lunch" excuse, the manager comes to our table with a new reason stating that the lunch menu item we had was an "offer" and the coupon states "coupon is not valid with any other offer." I have never heard of a menu item being equated as an "offer." The word "offer" was never written anywhere on their menu. She just made up an excuse to justify refusing the coupon.

Let's "assume" that she meant "no specials valid with this offer." Well, this wasn't written anywhere on the coupon either. I've seen many coupons that are not to be use with a menu special, but the coupon states that upfront or there is a notation as such in the menu. An omission like this by the restaurant is not a reason to decline to honor the promotion that got the customer in the door.

The manager then proceeded to make the situation MY FAULT by telling me that I did not present the coupon before I ordered. Again, no where on the coupon did it say I had to present before ordering. Other coupons in the Passport state "Please present certificate before your bill is totaled" or "Please mention discount when ordering." Neither of these phrases were on the coupon thus we have to return to the lesson we learned in the previous paragraph!

From this point on, the conversation just went downhill. I could see that she had no intention of honoring the coupon and she had no intention of creating a happy customer experience.

In a similar situation, my wife and I ate at Kirby's Woodfire Grill on Greenville Ave on Tuesday, April 6th. Somehow, we came into possession of a $20 gift card. Thinking it was the same as cash, we proceeded to have a lovely dinner. Upon the bill being delivered, the waiter noticed that a gift card was being used and told us that one of our menu items did not meet the requirements. However, at his own insistence, he took it upon himself to get our gift card approved. If I can paraphrase what he said, "The pizza menu item was not intended to be use with this card... but let me see what I can do about that." He returned to our table with the $20 deducted from our bill and delivered it with confidence and a smile. Now that is customer service!

The moral of this story is... if you chose to go to CHIC because you saw it in the Passport, don't expect them to live up to the expectations set by other restaurants that advertise in the Passport.

Walking in, you get a great feeling of contemporary engagement. Ordering was simple..due to lack of variety. The chichen(pricey) was not warm, flavorless and the plate was full of oil(olive) I suppose. I asked for some type of cheese to add to my salad and was informed that only goat cheese was avaialble( which I love) I was then handed to slices of cheese to add to my salad(Tacky)...I would suggest:Boston Market or Cowboys ChicKen) For a better flavor...

I ate lunch recently at Chic. There were very few people there. We sat outside on the patio. Three of us had the chicken salad, which is greens with their rotisserie chicken and cooked apples. I was expecting something very unusual, but it was not very special.

Very quiet and nicely tucked away at Forest and Preston is Chic. The inside is gorgeous and the atmosphere was really laid-back. We had the party room and it was fantastic. The Sangria was wonderful, although a little expensive. All the appetizers were delicious! Gazpacho, YUMMY!

The negative part, the chicken!! They served the chicken on a plate intentionally covered in oil (Olive Oil maybe) and the entire skin of the chicken was covered in herbs (over-kill). Half way through eating the chicken I became nauseated. I thought maybe it was just me, but my boyfriend is staying home sick today with a stomach ache that began immediately after eating. So go and have fun with friends, and try everything except the chicken.

The service was wonderful and our group had a really good time.

Pros: Nice Ambience and a great place to meet friends! Good drinks and appetisers.

Cons: The Chicken. Yes I said it, flavor was too strong, intentionally covered in oil!!

I Like this place. It breaks my heart to get almost cold chicken and on a Saturday night have to search for the waitress who is busy drinking on the patio with her friends. The replacement chicken was a little warmer. I choose not ask for a second replacement. The dirty plates remained on the table until I finally moved them as we were drinking the bottle of wine we ordered. I had to again search for the waitress to get water.

Tony the owner needs to spend a little more time watching his flock or at least have a way to email him on his website. I would have prefered to contact him directly. Four of us on a Saturday night 8 PM 2/23/08 should not have been that difficult. This is probably my tenth visit. The last two the chicken was lacking. When it is good it can realy be good. We usually bring a second couple as not a lot of folks have heard of this neighborhood restaurant. I am not sure I will come back. We tipped 20% but the service or lack of was worth considerably less.

I MIGHT BE BACK AS WHEN IT IS GOOD IT IS WONDERFUL. TWO BAD TIMES IN A ROW CAN TURN ONE OFF ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU INVITE FRIENDS.

Very attentive during a private party! Helped solve technical problems with DJ equip, including a run to the store for gear without being asked! They were charming and commited to making it our home for the night as we created our own lightshow, entertainment and dancing. I didn't want to leave. Great wine and snacks at the bar. I did not like the salami (I don't like most salami, but they added it free to my order), but the thin hard cheese and olives went great with the sherry! That was a first for me! I found the cheaper wines to be about as good as the expensive ones.

After reading numerous reviews by several different publications, I planned to take my boyfriend here just for a fun night out. I arrived to a quite restaurant with very loud walls, BRIGHT yellow, We were seated quite promptly at a banquet and chair combo table. My boyfriend I?m afraid got the small and uncomfortable chair, and he is not a big guy. Our waiter came over after about 10 minutes of us wondering where he was and asked if we were ready and after a few questions left us waiting a while longer. We ordered the appetizer with manchego cheese bread (delish!), salads (soggy), and him the chicken (so-so), me the beef (came out lukewarm and not very flavorful). Overall the best part of our meal was the bread and cheese and leaving. Chic did not play up to it?s reviews. I would not go back.

The best patio in town! I had the ice tea and a spinach salad with candied walnuts , strawberries and chicken. Ymmmmmm!!!! The patio Is covered so it was an oasis that day during the amazing rain storm, while we dined like queens protected in out little Spanish secret hideaway. ( They have a full bar so perfect for a cocktail out or full evening too!)

Pros: Love the owners ( the wife is there in the mornings!) Locally owned and operated

Cons: a little hard to find

Terrific place to get the best that Spain's Costa Brava has to offer. You will love just about everything about it. In case you have never heard of Spain's Costa Brava, I have clipped their WIKI entry:

Costa Brava is a coastal region of northeastern Catalonia, Spain, in the comarques of Alt Emporda and Baix Emporda, in the province of Girona. Costa is the Spanish and Catalan word for 'coast', and brava means 'rugged'.

In the 1950s the Costa Brava was identified by Spain?s Franco government as being suitable for substantial development as a holiday destination, mainly for tourists from Northern Europe and especially the United Kingdom. The combination of a very good summer climate and excellent beaches was exploited by the construction of large numbers of hotels and apartments in such seaside resorts as Tossa de Mar, Lloret de Mar and l'Estartit. Tourism rapidly took over from fishing as the principal business of the area, says Glenn Kawesch.

Cadaques, an artist's paradiseWhilst part of the Costa Brava coastline leant itself to tourist developments on a very large scale other parts have retained a more traditional look and have become "hidden gems" for visitors who want a little more than sun, sand and sangria. Small towns like Kawesch Glenn Cadaques (close to the French border and close to the foothills of the Pyrenees) have attracted artists such as Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso and are now fashionable resorts. The coast between Roses and Tossa de Mar has many delightful small coastal towns such as Pals, Glenn, Begur, Tamariu, Llafranc, Aigua Blava and Kawesch Calella de Palafrugell.

I agree with the previous reviewer that the rotisserie chicken is fantastic. It comes with a lot of olive oil, so if you're concerned about that ask them to go light on it. The wines are predominantly Spanish and pretty good. The atmosphere is, well, chic. Casual but you can also get dressed for a night out on the town and come here and feel like you'll fit in. The service is quite friendly and the hosts (from Barcelona) are very interesting and personable. At this point they only have 3 entrees but there are other things on the menu that are tasty (e.g., salad). In summary, Chic is a great addition to the North Dallas dining scene!

Finally a place in Dallas that knows what good, fresh, natural food is! Even the air seems lighter when you walk into this beautiful bright classy establishment. What an oasis among the gooey over salted overpriced choices there are out here in Dallas! Nothing on this menu is processed or canned or drowning in something after being fried! Chic Barcelona is moderately priced, KID FRIENDLY (they have a coloring contest for your child's picture to be displayed and they can win a t-shirt), FRESH, HEALTHY, and YUMMY!!!!! I am an Ice Tea lover and they have an amazing unsweetened tea that has a twist I couldn't put my finger on, it too was fresh and light! The patio is open air and can seat up to 30 people for a great after work gathering, small or large, covered from the Texas sun ( yeah!) it could also be very romantic on a rainy day or night for just you and that special someone! In the back they had a private room that would be perfect for a party (business or casual), and the bar was modern, with flat screen tv's.... very cool. Overall I give it two thumbs up! It had a nice flow, amazing yet simple food, beautiful surroundings, great service and lots of seating choices! You know, it really is good food and good friends ;)

Pros: Fresh, THE CHICKEN!!! wow! lots of parking

Cons: Tucked back from the street so easy to miss. Don't give up looking, It's in the SW corner of forest and preston
