I've been eating at Louie's... for a decade. I've always gone for the ambiance and food. We've had an array of experiences to the point we stopped going for over a year. We still return occasionally for a few favorite dishes but know that the staff turnover is huge probably because of mgmt so your service will be adequate but the food is usually very good. Years ago they had a gnocci appetizer that was to kill for. If you're not going for the $35.00 deal just order the regular appetizer it's usually much better. Just my opinion...

Pros: Lovely carpaccio and great dishes

Cons: Management is gruff and cares nothing about customers

We were seated in a large party downstairs; the dining area is pretty much outdated. Service was very slow, only managed to get two drinks in three hours.

My main dish was beef filet with jumbo shrimp and mash potatoes. The cut of beef was questionable as mine had a lot of tendons, pretty chewy, but tasted okay. The two shrimp were WAY over cooked. I believe the mash potatoes were either, overcooked, undercooked, or made from powder; everybody said something different, but nobody liked them.

If you are going to spend this kind of money going out, I would put the effort into finding something a place that tries a little harder!

Pros: The escargots was a huge favorite among the party...BUT

Cons: Service was slow, looks outdated, main dish suffered

Watched them drop a piece of fish on the floor, wash it off and then serve it. Unclean, disgusting, also, is this an Asian fusion restaurant or a Mediterranean restaurant? There are plenty or great Mediterranean tuna recipes, you don't have to honey miso glaze it. If you say you are Mediterranean and a tapas bar act like it. Stop trying to be like every other crappy fusion restaurant that misses the target. The most important part of cooking is what you don't put in.

I went here last night, enticed by the Austin Restaurant Week Menu offering a three course meal for $35. This was a Wednesday night so we didn't expect it to be hugely busy, so where slightly disappointed to be sat on table halfway into the stairwell with every waiter and bathroom patron brushing past my jacket. Why did no one take our jackets?!? To be fair I asked to be moved, and was moved to a great table, that certainly cheered me up.
The menu is amazing. A little bit pricey, but some very interesting selections. I decided to ignore the set menu and go a la carte, the other 3 went for the menu. We began, of course, with the wine list, and started to get disappointed. A Mediterranean grill / tapas bar with 0 Spanish wines ?!? Interesting.
A wrong starter was brought out for one of us, but our great waiter left it for us on the house, which was nice. It would be generous to describe the actual food as such. A tuna tartar had an extremely bitter aftertaste that none of us where able to place, and not much else. My softshell crab with a crunchy batter turned out to be more deep fried fish finger than anything else. That's fine though, I love fish fingers. Both the ladies went for a creamy pasta dish who's name I forget, but it was rather good.
Ah, the mains. My duck was tough, my side order forgotten. My wife, who had specifically requested her r*ck of lamb to be at least medium rare due to her being pregnant was dismayed to find it rarer than the two steaks we had ordered as well, and I found myself eating lamb instead of my duck. The steaks were unimpressive cuts of meat, averagely prepared, nothing to write home about. The ladies ordered Creme Brulee for desert, and I am somewhat of an aficionado. I rarely order it in restaurants as a disappointing creme brulee makes me very sad, but I have never come across one that I didn't finish anyway. Imagine slightly runny scrambled eggs, flavoured with vanilla. Disgusting.
Overall, poor poor poor.

For a "fine dining" experience, Louie's 106 is sadly lacking. While the food wasn't terrible, the service was just horrible.......servers were slow, clueless and sometimes verging on rude. Most of our food was acceptable, some of it a little bland, but even if the food had been great it would have been overshadowed by annoyingly bad service. All in all, underwhelming, and we won't be rushing back to Louie's 106.

It's hard for me to believe all the recent negative reviews for this place, after experiencing Louis 106 recently and being impressed with all that they had to offer. When my father and I visited, we were instantly acknowledged and seated. Our waitress was at our table within a few minutes, giving us menus and reciting the specials. I ordered a steak, while my father ordered a fish dish, which was one of the specials. The waitress provided additional assistance in helping us choose both complimentary sides and wine for our dishes.
Our food came out within a reasonable time (15-20 min) and tasted excellent. The steak came just as ordered and the fish was prepared perfectly, too.
The atmosphere lends itself to a laissez faire attitude, with the intent of not to over serve. Given this atmosphere, it would make sense that waitstaff would take a little bit longer to come take your order and not ask you a million times if your food tastes right.
The highlight of the evening was the piano player who started at 9:30pm (on weekdays, I think). He played any requests, in addition to his set lists. The music was just right in volume, as Dad and I could still hold a conversation.
I would go back here again and again. In fact, I'm buying a gift certificate to Louis' for a rather finicky friend of mine and am willing to put it to the test. Definitely worth the drive downtown.

Pros: Live Piano Music, Excellent & Creative Dishes, Not Over Serving

Cons: Some may characterize service as lazy, A little on the expensive side

.

Wait staff miscommunicated. Ravioli was no better than what I buy at Costco. I had always heard good things about this place, too, but I doubt I will go back. For the price and the reputation, I was very disappointed.

Everyone in my downtown firm used to patronize this place, dined there frequently, took clients there, etc. Then we had a taste of the unbelievably rude service, which unfortunately starts from the top down. In planning a 40-head luncheon, we ordered some entrees to sample, sent our young, Hispanic, casually- dressed assistant administrator to pick up. One entree was wrong (restaurant's screw-up). When called, restaurant promised to replace, our colleague went back over. Upon arrival, manager insisted he pay for the replacement since he hadn't brought the "used" one back (as if they could serve it to someone else!). Although the mistake was her fault, the manager was snotty, rude, snide, and disrespectful to our employee, pointing and gesturing as if he needed to be schooled. Two followup calls from us to owner/manager Joe went unanswered. Joe was evasive and unhelpful in a face-to-face visit. Though he promised to get to the bottom of the incident and call us back, he did not. Give this joint a pass - - - there are plenty of places in downtown Austin with better food that are happy to have your business.

I went here with a party of 10 for a graduation dinner. Everything was going fine until the waitress served my mother's plate upside down right in front of her. I wasn't really upset about this, accidents happen. When she finally brought out the replacement plate, the fish was tough and dry, probably from being cooked too quickly. From that point on, we didn't see our waitress again until the check came. The busboys cleared our entire table and we were just sitting there--no one to refill drinks, ask us if we needed anything, or offer a dessert menu. My brother had to go downstairs to speak to the manager who said he would take my mother's meal off the bill, but no one even apologized for what happened. At the prices they charge, I expect much better service. The food was okay, very rich, nothing special. I definitely would not recommend this place.

Pros: Can't think of any

Cons: Lack of service

My fiance and I went here on a Sat. night on the recommendation of the hotel that we were staying at. We were seated right away but it took our waitress about 5 minutes to greet us. After she finally showed up she must have taken another 5-7 mins to come back with our drinks. As usual my fiance hadn't made up her mind on what to get on the menu which turned out being a 15 min smoke break for our waitress. I exaggerate on the smoke break part but not at all the time that it took for her to get back to us to take our order. The food however made up for the lackluster service. For the appetizer we had the tuna tartar which was exceptional. For our entrees I had the flounder special which was heavenly while my fiance had the halibut which was also good, but not nearly as good as the flounder. I would go back, but perhaps next time I'll get it to take back to our room.

A few months ago my husband and I decided to give this restaurant a try. We were very pleased that we chose to do so, our experience was perfect in every respect. Our waitress was gracious and attentive, we went with her suggestion and tried the sea bass and the roasted duck. Their wine list is extensive with reasonable prices. The only complaint we had was that the music was a little loud, but as soon as we mentioned this to our server it was taken care of as well. We returned a few weeks later with some friends and again everything was fantastic. We highly recommend this restaurant to friends and will definitely be back.

The place is not what it used to be at all. This was the 2nd and last time it's been poor all the way around,we won't be back.
It's now loud and fast, poorly prepared basic food and weak service. The GM Joe wasn't interested in feedback any more than the owner. The menu prices would have been fine if they could have delivered quality food and service, they didn't.
You don't keep Risotto in a steamtble !!! It's made to order.
luke warm Lobster BASE bisque with too much congnac.
ONE warm crab cake per order mostly filler not crab.

The front door staff is the most qualified staff that work there, they even answer the phones and are used to settling down unhappy customers and covering for Joe. Rename the place to Joe's joint and Bar

Louie's 106 --- what can I say other than I have never had a bad meal and the service has always been excellent. Sure Joe is a creep but heck what restaurant owner is not?

I love the paper table cloths at lunch and cannot tell you the number of deals that have been outlined on those paper cloths.

I dare you to have the mussels, a pasta dish and dessert (maybe a good wine and an espresso afterwards) and not feel better about the world.

We do not often make the trek all the way downtown to eat or eat at establishments such as Louie's (were just a young newlywed couple starting out) but it was a special occassion. Although we were appropriately dressed, we were very much made to feel as though we did not belong there. The food was fabulous, but the staff was unfriendly and snooty, at best. To add to our embarrassment, when I mentioned that we had received something in the mail from American Express that we could dine there with additional discounts if we paid with our card, we were eyed warily. We did not have the coupon with us at the time and were not counting on being able to use it, but thought that it was definitely worth asking about. We were told that we could get the discount as long as we paid with our card and we were very excited and appreciative. Until we got our bill that is..
At the bottom of our bill, our friendly little waiter had ADDED THE GRATUITY to a party of 2. I can not even tell you how insulting that is. The worst part of it is that both my husband and I both have worked as servers in college and have great respect for what hard work it is. We may be working class, but the thing about us blue collar folk is that we know what its like to work hard for our money and therefore tip accordingly. We generally tip 25%-35%, depending on how impressed we are with our server. We were just discussing that we were going to tip towards the high end of that scale (not because we thought he has very friendly, but because he said we could use our discount) when he brought us the ticket with his tip already on there. Although we went ahead and tipped on top of that, we left there fuming. It probably wont hurt their business at all, and if this is a restaurant policy, they probably dont even care, but we wont be back.

On reading the review below mine, he wrote (The trout... left much to be desired... I thought it was boring and the breading is one I make on ocassion. I didn't really understand how this is considered "tapas" or "small plates") Well the explanation in quite simple. On the sign it says "A MEDITERRANEAN GRILL AND TAPAS BAR" meaning that it isn't just a tapas bar. Their main menu consists of Mediterranean inspired dishes. You may request a Tapas menu to your server. Tapas originated in spain where barmen would place a peice of bread over their drinks to keep the flys out. Later it evolved into small plates of food. While the service can be it or miss, I find during a restaurants busy time a little patients and understanding goes a long way. Being a server myself I can understand that I am not my servers only table and other tables are just as important as me. Usually if we take in account that they are there for everyone and not just you your experience will be much better. On the tapas subject I have been going to Louis for a while now. And All day Sunday and Monday in the bar area Tapas are only a 1.50, these little babies can become a cheap meal in there selfs. As far as there regular menu I highly Recomend the Sea Bass, It melts in your mouth with a wonderful explotion of flavor. If you live in Austin and have not eatin here you are missing out.

Usually whenever you have quality food you have smaller portions. I found these sizes to be really normal. They were large for the price. The steak was delicious. Calamari plate is huge and worth trying. The trout... left much to be desired... I thought it was boring and the breading is one I make on occasion. I didn't really understand how this is considered "tapas" or "small plates" I went for dinner during the week and the service was ok. Because I'm younger I felt like we didn't get as much attention, I was going to order wine but after the waitresse's attitude I decided against it. The environment is very nice, low lighting, very cozy.

Pros: calamari, ambience, location

Cons: service- rude waitress and uninspiring hostess, parking

.

Great ambience. A nice bar with a good selection of single malts.

For appetizers we had the crab cake and the fried calamari. Both were very good.
For entrees I had the macadamia crusted tuna which was great. Very rare just the way it should be. My wife had the salmon. It was very "fishy" and not very remarkable.

The service was cold and indifferent. The waitress had no personality.

A very good restaurant. Only the indifferent service is holding it back.

This place has been around for a longtime and there's a reason for that. Their food is awesome!! Last night my boyfrend and I went there to eat. We split the mussels as an appetizer, then ordered the 8 oz. filet and marinated chilean sea bass, both to die for. Atmosphere was great, service was great!! Although on the weekends I recommend making a reservation or arriving there early.

i have been eating here for years, but wont again. the last time i went for lunch, the waitress was inconsiderate and forgot our orders. when mine came, it was inedible-the past a had been sitting under heat lamps for too long, and my friend's fish was sitting in a pool of oil. we were each given the wrong wines, and had to repeat our orders. i have always gotten EXCELLENT service from the tall, dark-haired waiter who knows a lot about wine, but , other than him, my experiences have been uneven. the hostesses also tend to want to see parties of two in very uncomfortable areas near a lot of traffic.

i have been eating here for years, but wont again. the last time i went for lunch, the waitress was inconsiderate and forgot our orders. when mine came, it was inedible-the past a had been sitting under heat lamps for too long, and my friend's fish was sitting in a pool of oil. we were each given the wrong wines, and had to repeat our orders. i have always gotten EXCELLENT service from the tall, dark-haired waiter who knows a lot about wine, but , other than him, my experiences have been uneven. the hostesses also tend to want to see parties of two in very uncomfortable areas near a lot of traffic.

Pros: good moules, good valet parking

Cons: bad service, greasy food, uneven service

.

The menu is terrific - we haven't had a bad meal yet - and the specials are fabulous and very well priced. Service has been really good, even when we've eaten upstairs. They will also validate for parking in the lot across the street.

Louis 106 should not call themselves a fine dining restaurants. The absolutely horrible service at this restaurant completely ruined what should have been a joyous occasion for me and my family. I came to Louis for my graduation from UT with a large group of people. We were made to wait a long time for our table (even though we had reservations) and after being seated, we saw no waiter at our table for about 15 minutes. When I asked to speak to the manager, the owner of the restaurant was provided. He was the rudest, most unaccomodating man I have ever met. I work in the restaurant industry and his treatment of me was disgusting - He made me cry at my own graduation dinner! He never even came up to our table to see how we were doing after we complained to him! Fine dining?-I don't think so!!

My friend and I wanted a nice upscale place to take our dates and this place ending up being perfect. I read great reviews on their food but mixed on their service. From our experience, this place is top notch on service. We dressed up and every bit of the night was as elegant, if not more, than we expected. The waitress (Megan) was super friendly and accomodating. My date was allergic to shell fish and she went out of her way to help her order something that would not bother her. The wine list was incredible and the specials were delicious. I recommend making early reservations and asking for a table in the back. We had our own booth and it turned out to be a most elegant romantic evening. I highly recommend this place for fine dining for a special occasion.

I have heard of this place and finally made it over last weekend. I was very impressed with the environment and set up, as the place seems to take you away. It was very busy this Saturday night and they look like they can handle big groups.
The Sea Bass was magnificent, the Ahi Tuna was pretty good - but not the best I've ever had- and the squash soup was awesome (if you like spicy).
Only downer was the service. Our waitress seemed stressed out, brought out the wrong salads, and it took longer than usual to get our main course. Appetizers were quick, but way too long for the main course but the sea bass made up for it. Also has big downstairs room to accomodate big parties. I will definitely go back to Louie's 106 and highly recommend this restaurant!

I have eaten here twice and both times were miserable. While the food is quite good, the service is ridiculously bad. Servers are unapologetic about the shoddy service and act as if they are doing you a favor by waiting on you.

The food was good at Louie's 106 but the service was awful. First of all, the host ignored us and waited on the men who came behind us. I felt like they looked down their noses at my boyfriend and me even though we were nicely dressed and had a reservation. The waitress was huffy when we asked for a table not up against another couple. The paella was delicious but the service was terrible. I would not recomenend eating here - there are plenty of places in Austin with better food and service for the price.

This place was not that crowded and we were seated promptly (and it was a Friday night, too). If the food were to recieve a grad, it would be an A+! The appetizers were excellent, especially the crab cake (best crab cake I have ever enjoyed). Go there now!

I went to Louie's 106 a couple of weeks ago and hated it!!! The food was bland......and the chicken sausage tapas tasted funny. But what really ruined it for me was the service!!! Our waitress was the most snobbish person I have ever met.......she hardly ever smiled, and answered most of our questions with monosyllables. I had gone there mainly coz of the citysearch reviews.....and I was very disappointed!!! Would definitely not recommend this place to anyone.

My husband and I were starving after our wedding. We love Louie's, so it was only perfect to have a late night dinner there. Our hotel was just around the corner and it was far enough from the large crowds of sixth street to be relaxing.

Louir's provided the best food consistently over my many many visits there. Great service and a prime location in downtown all add to the reason this is the best restaurant in town.

A '98 U.T. grad, I return to Austin as often as possible, for football games, live music, and of course, Louie's 106. This place is an Austin staple as far as I'm concerned. The food is consistently top notch, as is the service. Best tapas I have found anywhere! Ask to sit downstairs in the private dining room if you have a large group - the room is wondefully cozy. And make sure to save room for dessert!
