I went to Jesephine's while on business based on a recommendation from the consierge. I had the ceasar salad which was ok and the veal parmasan which was terrible. Sadly when I asked my waiter as I was ordering, he told me that salads and parmasan dishes were their specialty. Meat was over fried. The tomato sauce was terrible. And I could see the shape of the mozzarella slice on the meat not completely melted. I will not go back.

Traveling to Houston, the concierge made a suggestion for a good restaurant within walking distance of the hotel and close to the Toyota Center. The place looked very nice and the wait was short. We got seated quickly and from there out, the expedience was gone. We waited too long for drink orders, then again too long to receive or drinks/appetizers. The waiter we received was curt at best and unapologetically slow. The appetizer was disappointingly delivered at the time of the meal. The only highlight of the night was the food was actually very good. I dined on a very good pasta primavera, with very fresh vegetables and a very tasty spicy marinara. The irony is that on the tables they recognize their location and offer to share with the staff that you are in a hurry; an excellent idea we tried to capitalize on. At the end of our meal we skipped another bottle of wine as a result of the wait and asked to speak to a manager. Even the manager took 10 minutes to come visit. I spoke with her how the food was very good but we were dissatisfied with the service and wait provided. The answer I received in return was full of excuses with no intent to fix the situation at hand.

I will not be referring and I will share with as many people as will listen to avoid this restaurant.

First off those of you that complain about runny sauce have clearly never made it. Traditonal sauce is runny/ thin, that is unless you add a ton of cream and or butter or cheat with tomato paste (as in came out of a can). I have eaten there and often have great service and everyone I have brought there at diff times love their food. This even includes people that are Itailan. Yes the food is simple, so what it tastes good! It is food not entertainment. What do you want it to do, do a song and dance? The only time I have subpar service there is when the place is busy. It is usaully a good idea to give a place a second chance as every place has off days. Try the sicilian ziti it is a great dish and can't seem to find it elswhere. Putting up with the DT parking is worth the trip and it isn't as bad as other places DT (don't have to pay a high price or circle for an hour). The service is often good and the servers often apologize when things are taking awhile.

Prices on line menus need to be updated.
The service is poor . It was better before when you order your food and they delivery to your table , now is a sit down with a waiter.

This review is from a regular customer who dines in during lunchtime for 8 years now.
I don't what is going on with the bad reviews and sorry if you had a horrible experience.
I have lunch gatherings at Josephines during lunch time (11P.M. - 3 P.M.) . The food is good during lunch time. Take a chance and you will NOT be disappointed.
Antonio is the best waiter there and is always prepare to make you laugh when you are having a bad day.
Request for Antonio (the waiter) when you visit Josephines and you will be happy with the customer treatment you receive from him. He treats you like family and brightens your day or night with a smile and politeness. Antonio has a great sense of humor and is my regular waiter when I visit the restaurant.
He is very polite and ready to exceed your expectation that you may have. He makes very sure you are happy and content with your food order. Everyone makes a recipe a certain way and has a way of cooking it that is why we like some cooking and dislike others' cooking. We all know you can't please everyone the importance in this all is trying. I am happy with the food during lunchtime.
No matter how hard you try you can't please everyone!
Try the food during lunchtime and you will love the food there because I know I do otherwise I would not be a regular customer. there.
The Gumbo soup is good with a salad.
I hope you enjoy the great customer service as much as I do with Antonio plus the Gumbo soup with salad on the side.

Our small lunch group took a co-worker here for a b-day get-together. This was my first time to dine here. I had one or two "decent" previous reviews. Believe me! It was not good at all. Two people had to send their items back. Sad to say, one item was a salad, a simple ceasar salad. How do you mess up a salad?! The comparison was to the taste of "Sardines". YUCK!! The other was the oven-fried fish. Two people tried that one and it was definitely a NO! My entree was chicken parmesan. The pasta was not drained, therefore, I ended up with "wet" meat. There was very little sauce on the spaghetti. I do not like wet meat! That's not good! I will however, give them the recognition only from a few that had the shrimp alfredo, they said it was "good". Other than that, the remainder of the party was not satisfied!

I have NEVER been served food that bad! I honestly do not understand how they can stay open. My girlfriend and I are both sick from her seafood dish. I could only stomach one bite, luckily or I might be as sick as her. My beef ravioli had ZERO flavor and the Marinara is a sad excuse. Wish I could say something good obout the food. It was nasty. What was that freaking stuffed artichoke??? Unique yes but not good AT ALL. I suggest sticking with the bread but don't blame me if you are sick later that evening. I really wish I could have met the chef that evening. It was 3/21/2009 if it is you.

We have loved Josephine's since our first experience there. Johnny always remembers us and greets us at our table. Carlos is one of the reasons that we have made Josephine's a regular evening out. He is friendly, attentive and makes the meal that much more enjoyable. I don't understand the large number of bad reviews. Maybe I am not as sofisticated a diner as they are but I know what I like. We dine there before any downtown event and on other occasions and have NEVER been disappointed!

I went for appetizers before a show at House of Blues. The service was awful. We waited 30 minutes to get salads- and only two of the three arrived, and ended up leaving before the appetizers were ready- because we had been waiting an hour. The glasses were dirty (old lipstick on them), and the waiter would appear every 10 minutes promising bread. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

We made reservations a week in advance for dinner before a concert at Toyota Center in December 2008. We arrived on time for our 6:30 reservations and were promptly seated. We ordered dinner and drinks at 6:45. At 8:00 our dinner had not arrived. We canceled our order so we could meet clients for the concert. We were still asked to pay for our drinks. We will never, ever try this place again and will discourage everyone we know from going. It was a terrible experience. Houston has too many good restraurants that know what service is all about to waste our time and money at a place like Josephine's

I visited Josephine?s in October 2008 before a concert at the House of Blues. The food and service were below average. I had the way over baked chicken and my wife had mushy tasteless vegetable lasagna. I have had better meals at Olive Garden. I was very disappointed because any restaurant that has been in business for 20 years should be exceptional. If you are in or near downtown Houston, there are much better Italian restaurants such as, Vincent's.

Over the years I've dined here many times with various groups of friends and everyone has always been happy. I've found that Josephines excels at appetizers, pizza and desserts. The Eggplant Ghiotti is awesome. It's a very large appetizer served with capers, raisens, olives, tomatoes. REALLY WONDERFUL but you will want to split it because it could be an entree. Their bruchetta is very good and large as well. Good fried artichokes. Good sausage and peppers. I've dined there many times ordering one appetizer after another and then just moving on to dessert. I've had their sicilian pizza many times as well. A couple slices of this is also very filling with it's capers, mushroom, tomato, artichoke toppings. They have a pasta that's done with this sicilian style that's very good as well. You can order it with Chicken, Veal or Shrimp per the menu. We ordered it with sausage which was very good. Some friends had it with chicken which they said they liked. I haven't cared for some of their attempts at lighter cooking here but if you stick with the standards they have been a safe bet. Or have anything I recommended above and you will be happy. Usually the service is very good here. If you go on a busy night the kitchen seems to get slow so allow yourself time. Parking used to be very easy but it getting more difficult and the upcoming opening of the Houston Pavillions across the street will likely make it even more difficult. Unless you want to valet or pay for a garage....

Salad was nice. Food very average. Service good. Quaint place. Chef needs to turn it up a few notches. Not much better than Olive Garden.

I don't remember the last time I had service in a restaurant like that. Our waiter was a seasoned professional with international charm that made us all feel so special. The food was great, but the ambiance and service made the dinner a wonderful memory. We will most definitely return to Houston for Josphine's!!

My family and i dined at Josephine's Ristorante before the Rocket's game. There were 6 of us, and not one of us liked our dishes. The food was AWFUL. Everything was watery and had no taste. My food tasted like clorox. Not joking either. We had them take some of our meals off of our tickets it was just that bad. Other people sitting around us were not eating there food either. Just moving it around with there forks! The only good thing was the salad and bread. Do not eat here!!!

This is my first review so this should tell you how disappointed I was with our dining experience. It started out good with garlic bread and salad, but went downhill from there. The lasagna was so bad you could not even eat it. It had no cheese and was swimming in a pool of very watery bland tomato sauce. The fetucinni alfredo had no taste and had a slight smell of clorox . We had to have it removed from our bill it was so disgusting. We also tried their veal house special and found it very chewy with little taste. I could go on about the other dishes in our party of 6 but you get the idea. Very disappointed in this restaurant because we love Italian and were looking forward to some great food. The best taste was the peppermint on the way out the door !!! If you love Italian food this is not the place for you.

I am from out of town, and am in Houston on business. I stopped by Josephines for lunch after hearing that they had pretty good food. I ordered the veal parmessean. The veal was tender and tasty. However, I would have preferred there to have been more cheese on the dish. Also, the sauce was watery. If you are going for lunch and are dressed well, make sure that you take one of the bibs they offer. The sauce is watery enough that you will need it. There was no wait and the price was reasonable. All in all, a good place to go for a decent lunch at a fair price, but not a place to write home about.

Our Server Jaun was very accommodating and courteous. Food was perfect, Josephine's special salad and homemade soup was authentic Italian. Our party of four was very satisfied, we all enjoyed the most eye pleasing and tasting desserts. We did not have a long wait and we were not rushed. This was our second visit, will be back soon.

I went to Josephine's last Friday for lunch and it was pretty good Italian food. I had the Chicken Parmesan and it had really good flavor. The spaghetti sauce was really watery though. It was still good, but really runny. It took no time to order and get the food, which was a plus. Plenty of seating. If you work downtown and are tired of eating the same food everyday, go check out Josephine's.

The best Italian Food all around. The service and the menu is real Italian, not Tex.Italian. My wife loves the basil, garlic, and olive oil bread dip, I do too. They even offer you a bib. A great place for families, and the dress is not fancy, but the fancy dressed need not feel uncomfortable. The waiting staff is great, prompt, and attentive, but not too attentive that they become a pest. A great place to eat.

I took my family here one evening before a ballgame. Parking was easy, but that was the hightlight of our meal. Service was slow and poor, food was overpriced and poor quality. My wife and I had Lasagna (usually a safe bet). It was pitiful. No cheese of any kind (no ricotta), just some overccoked pasta and runny sauce with a few specs of unseasoned hamburger meat. My daughters had a grilled shrimp dish, overcooked shrimp, with overcooked pasta, and runny sauce. There are so many good Italian Restaraunts in Houston, stay away from this place!

I was EXTREMELY disappointed, but as my friend said, it's a restaurant downtown near hotels; they're not looking for repeat customers. The bruschetta was nothing more than chopped tomatos in oil atop toast, so for those who called this place "authentic," they clearly have never been to Italy or to a real Italian restaurant! When I confronted the waiter, he acknowledged other restaurants do serve it properly with fresh basil leaf and mozzarella. Of course it wasn't until he brought our equally disappointing main course that he recognized our distaste for the bruschetta (read: poor service). The pasta was not "al dente" but tasted like it had been cooking all day in a vat. The alfredo was watery, and the chicken was not grilled or fresh (read: out of a bag). Seriously folks, stay away. If you want real Italian, with better value and service, you can find it elsewhere!

I've had lunch here many times, always with quick service and always satisfiying. Their pizzas are excellent too and take a little more time, but worth the wait. Took an out of town relative for dinner and had an enjoyable meal. Service was attentive, and the entrees the waiter recommended were excellent. Even on a Friday night and with a Rockets game that evening there was little or no wait to be seated. (fyi Toyota center is 1 block away, this is a great place to catch a pre-game meal) The crowd was a good mix of friends, couples and families, with no need to shout to be heard even though the tables are close together. It feels like a real family run restaurant, with friends and family in mind. At least that's my definition of 'ambience'.

The service was poor all around. It took forever for them to greet us, take our drink order and our dinner order. The waiter mummbled and seemed put out. The wait was long, and the food was shotty. It honesty tasted like a 99cent TV Dinner, and when you pay $10 a plate, thats pretty dissapointing. We actually witnessed 2 other couples walk out because service was slow and unfriendly. I would have rather eaten at a fast food chain.

It honesty tasted like a 99cent TV Dinner, and when you pay $10 a plate, thats pretty dissapointing. We actually witnessed 2 other couples walk out because service was slow and unfriendly. I would have rather eaten at a fast food chain.

Cons: bad food, bad service, cramped

I've only been to Josephine's twice, and both times I've gotten the same entree - the alfredo with mushrooms. Although this doesn't sound particularly fancy, it's excellent. You can tell that the mushrooms are fresh. When I took my family the second time on my birthday, they seemed less impressed with their tomato-based dishes. They gave me a huge piece of Italian cream cake on the house for my birthday, and it was also delicious. It's worth checking out, especially if you get the mushrooms.

Josephine's is a great place to dine and view the cityscape of the growing Houston skyline. The food is authentic and excellent. The moment you walk in the door you can smell the aroma of fresh garlic which distinguishes itself from other would-be restaurants. On most nights, Josephine visits every table becoming acquainted with her visitors and sometimes sits and chats. Josephine's is like a home away from home.

we definitely recommend josephine's. The waitress could not have been nicer. It was a relaxed and very pleasant atmosphere. The sampler platter was great since it was difficult to decide from the excellent menu. The food was excellent and served promptly. Going downtown feels so special.

Belive it or not, try the gumbo. It's not something you'd expect to see on an Italian resaurant's menu, but it turns out that Josephine is apparently from Lousiana. The gumbo is some of the best anywhere.

The chicken parmesan was room temperature and was NOT cooked to order. The sauce for the spaghetti was so runny, but the time the noodle was at your mouth the sauce had all run off back on to the plate. Friendly people, horrendous food.

This place is great if you have nothing to do. Me and my g/f must've become invisible cause the waitress forgot about us. We waited too long for service throughout the meal. The manager was of no help and didn't seem to care that I was not happy with the service. He told me I should've expected bad service because it was Valentines. He obviously didn't want my business so I accomodate that by not going there anymore.
