We had the same situation occur last week when we went to Dr. Zs office--2 of us and we both "needed a deep cleaning". One was covered by insurance but the other wasn't until mid 2010. We were quoted $850 for a deep cleaning without insurance and just under $300 with insurance. Only the person covered by the insurance currently got the cleaning and was very pleased. When all was said and done, after some negotiation, the total bill [so far] was $150. Sounds a little fishy to me that all of their patients need a "deep cleaning" costing hundreds of dollars more than a normal cleaning. It's also fishy that they seem to diagnose something not covered by insurance but strongly recommend it gets done immediately.

Horrible dentist. She tried to charge me for a cleaning when I get 2 a year free. Then she proceeded to tell me I needed a deep cleaning and that my insurance wouldn't cover it until April and at this time it was Oct. She said so you really need it, it will cost $1,000. I said uh no I will wait until April. When April came I had it done and paid 550. Then she sent me a bill and said I owed her 300 more. Basically she is a scam because the procedure w/o insurance was 1,000 and with it was $850. She's out to get your money!
