I entered the ER with a high temperature, lower abdomen, and lower back pains. I was immediately triaged. The medical team determined that I likely had a urinary tract infection and, possibly, kidney stones. They ordered appropriate tests and admitted me.While I was in a standard inpatient room, my condition worsened and I became delirious. One of my nurses became so concerned that she arranged to have me transferred to the ICU. Not long after arriving the infection spread, developing into septicemia (septic shock) and I coded. Had I not already been in the ICU, I likely would have died. They resuscitated me, put me on a ventilator, and put me into a medically-induced coma for 5 days until I improved. I was then transferred to the PCU where I was treated for a couple more weeks until I recovered enough to go home. The doctors and nurses were outstanding, both very caring and competent. The non-medical staff (dietary, orderlies, security, etc.) were also very attentive and helpful. The physical plant and equipment (beds, furniture, floors, medical equipment, etc. ) all looked new or near new and was very clean and well-maintained. I hate going to the hospital for any reason and to the ER in particular but I've had two occasions to return since then (once for myself and once for my wife) and both visits were similar to the first. After having previously been in the ER and hospitalized in several major Boston hospitals, I'm glad I've now moved near Winchester so that, if I *need* hospitalization I can go there. Highly recommended.

I came into the ER this evening with severe chest pains while breathing in and I had asthma. I went to Winchester ER and they knew nothing about asthma! I was treated poorly by the nurse and the doctor who had no idea how to treat asthma.

1.Parking is horrific for ER patients! Try walking far when you can't breath well. Big sign for valet but no one is around to take your car.

2. The good think I have to say that they did a good job to get me right in ER patient room but then left me to suffer. While waking to the room down the hallway the assistant realized I needed a wheel chair. She said, "Ops I guess I should have asked you if you needed one." No kidding and thanks a lot!

4.The women gave me an attitude because I couldn't talk to provide her business information. However I had my health insurance card and license ready for her. Sorry but I was in the ER because of the pain and was experiencing asthma attack.

5.When the male nurse arrived he made me feel bad that I had chest pains and asthma. He said my O2 stats were fine and accused me of having anxiety. EDUCATION OF ASTHMA 101: Yes, you can have a major asthma attack and not have your O2 levels drop. An O2 level dropping is a late stage very serious sign of an asthma attack. Lastly, try to do a peak flow on a patient to see how the patient is doing. This is standard level of care with an asthmatic.

It was horrible I was having a hard time coping with the breathing issues and he didn??t understand this. I explained I had pain breathing in and out and I asked him for a nebulizer treatment. He told me I didn't need a nebulizer that I had to wait for the doctor. At this point I thought I was going to walk out and I was scared.

6.The doctor came in the room and he tried to give me pain medication! I refused to take this and he said, ??You can take a nebulizer treatment if you want but your O2 stats are fine.? He also made me feel bad and tried to convince me I was fine and I don't think you have asthma." The doctor did not seem confident and didn??t seem to know anything about asthma. He agreed the pain was from pleurisy of the lungs and gave me Motrin for this. Just so you know pleurisy is inflammation of the lining around the lunges and this is associated with sharp check pain upon breathing.

I'm now suffering with asthma for nearly two hours and you could hear me wheezing. Both the nurse and the doctor were fresh out of med school and clearly have no business working in an ER. I??m highly offended and they made me suffer. I was rushed home to take nebulizer treatments. I will never go back to this hospital again and I would never recommend anyone who has asthma to go to the hospital.

I agree with the previous reviewer. The facility is really dirty and the carpeted area outside the private rooms stink. I was really embarassed when friends and relatives came down to the hospital to see my new born. In addition to rooms being tiny, I had a very bad experience with one of the staff woman, who was ill-mannered and rude. I would never recommend this hospital to anyone for delivering your baby.

We recently had a baby at Winchester Hospital. The doctors and the nurse in the labor room were great. But the private rooms are horrible. They are tiny and the carpets outside of the rooms are filthy and literally stink, which is a big health hazard for the new borns and the mother. At some places there is tiled area and that too is black from dirt in the corners. We called the nurse/receptionist from the room helpline to ask for a maternity hosiery for the second time and she was really rude and while handing over she says "this is the last one you are going to get". Come on, we are not in the hospital for free. They rip off the insurace companies with huge bills and these nurses act as if they are doing charity. Before you opt for this hospital, go and check the facility for yourself and if you do that, you'll know what Iam talking about.Don't miss to check out the private room area. I would never recommend this hospital to anyone.

OMG. Run do not walk from this hospital unless you have a hang nail and are under 65 years of age! My poor friend had to endure the experience of her elderly dad contracting an awful MRSA infection following surgery at the Winchester hospital.

Recognizing he was not well following the surgery even after a follow up visit with the surgeon she managed to get him to Mass General Hospital where they said her dad would have died within 2 weeks if she'd not brought him there. They advised her to inform the dr. and Winchester hospital as they considered his care neglectful. When she did, all she got was the brush off from a very rude woman "manager of patient quality care" and after all he was 87!!! Yes, it could have happened at any hospital but did it have to be handled this way? Appalling! On a better note she does say that the nurses who attended her father were wonderful in general. (Hope they compensate them well!) All except for one who screamed at her because she didn't sign a dnr (her dad didn't want her to- yikes!). Kind of scary if you ask me.

Won't be taking my elderly father or mother there anytime soon!

It's a nice hospital--just wish they would update the maternity ward--the rooms are small and not very home-like, but everyone says the same thing about the staff--that they're wonderful and received excellent care and would deliver future children there.

Had a burn that was terrible, nurses would not even put ice on it. The burn was aggravated by the bad care they gave me. When I left Winchester Hospital, I went to Brigham and Womens about 1 hour later since I knew something was wrong. B&W was appalled that WH left me out of their care. They said that I had the choice of being put into a coma, and needed multiple skin grafts. This is the burn that WH said was nothing, and left me with no care in their ER for 3 hours until they basically just discharged me. Similarly, my husband had an intestinal blockage, and he was just sent home with no care. he had to go to Brighan and Women's the next day to get care.Wht I know from these experiences: do NOT go to Winchester Hospital. It takes literally 15 minutes to travel the 11 miles to go to MGH, why wouldn't you?

There is a serious problem in radiology, as no less than 3 of my family have had broken bones (in one case, a broken NECK) that was missed -- how the hell do you miss a broken bone?? Three strikes and they're out -- the rest of the hospital might be terrific but the ER is a danger. Be extremely careful!

Winchester ER has the worst staff ever. As a family member of someone admitted through the ER I have never been treated so poorly before. I was told to go away and to shut up by one Dr, while the other Dr told me he did not care that my girlfriend was in pain. Obviously there is more to the story, but to be treated this way by Drs and the staff is never acceptable.

The ER has misdiagnosed both a broken foot - it was broken right in half! causing near surgery and six months in a cast due to a delay in treatment! and a fractured clavicle (for which there is no treatment but it would have been nice to know...)

However, I gave birth to two children there and had a wonderful experience.

I delivered two of my children in this hospital and found it great several years ago. Within the last year my father had a heart attack and being in his eighty's we had great concern for him. But he made out just fine and everyone at the hospital was just great.

I am sorry that you experinced what you state as poor Quailty care. As a past employee of Winchester Hosp. Security Officer I have nothing but high Praise for the Staff in the Emergency Room . I worked with these fine people on the 10pm to 8am shift four to five nights a week from 2001-2002. I will admit times can be hetic. but they are or were never rude.I understand the feelings of the families involved with obtaining care in that situation

I have delivered both my son and daughter at this hospital and we all had excellent care. My care was terrific, the L&D nurses are great. My children were both preemies and had extended stays in the special care nursery (SCN). The staff there is friendly, patient and very caring, I wouldn't hesitate to send anyone else to deliver at the hospital.

My father was brought to ER for Pneumonia.
They put him in a freezing cold room for 5 hours. The staff was slow and rude to say the least.
I had asked them to turn down the AC which they said they would do. Nothing!. They said they would get my father an oxygen mask at 12: 30. I had to chase down the nurse Denise an hour later. There was another family there who I walked by when the daughter was calling out for help for her mother ..I think she thought i was a doctor or nurse.
The point is that nobody was responding to her desperate cry for help. There were 4-6 women standing around chatting like it was their lunch break. I understand that they deal with this day-to-day so they are insensitive to families who are in distress over their loved ones suffering but this was down right appalling! At one point they were standing outside of my father's bay chatting so loudly i had to close the curtain and ask them to move it somewhere else.

For a "Magnet" hospital I was shocked. It was the worst experience my father has ever had in a hospital. I had to leave for 2 hours and that is when things got worse. They treated his with disrespect. I won't go into the details but as soon as i was gone they shoved him around like he was a piece of luggage. I wish there was a way to report the staff.
A woman named Denise was particularly rude and she should be fired for her behavior.

Maybe they are better at delivering babies but please do not send an elderly person to Winchester Hospital in Massachusetts!
Choose another ER hospital if you can.

My wife delivered our last child here and the staff was excellent. we arrived without a moment to spare and the nurses did everything to make my wife comfortable. You could see how well the staff worked together and coordinated with the doctors. Delivery staff was excellent.

The maternity ward is state of the art with a video surveliance system/door bell to ring to get in. Great neo natal unit. The rooms are very roomy and the service you receive from everyone is fantastic. We were very happy. Parking is great either find a spot in the garage or on the street.

I had 2 children at Winchester Hospital and would never go anywhere else. Their care is wonderful and the nurses are so friendly and helpful. They have a great bedside manner, and keep you informed every step of the way. The doctors that are affiliated there are also wonderful. And believe it or not, I look forward to the food here! Giving birth is such a stressful time in your life and it's nice to know that you are in good hands and don't have to worry when you come here.

Last year, I became ill and was rushed to the emergency room at Winchester. Despite how busy the ER was, I got A+ medical attention. I have worked in emergency rooms and hospitals in the past, and I have NEVER seen such a group of sweet, truly caring individuals as the staff at WH!

After several hours, and every test imaginable, the doctors determined that I needed to be admitted. I was so scared because this was my first time ever being admitted, but they took GREAT care of me. I really felt like these people truly cared about how I was feeling and the pain I was in.

The ER nurses even came up to visit me, during the week I stayed and even bought me a teddy bear! How sweet!

I've been back for tests and even for the C-session of my friend's new baby and the quality of the place never diminished. This is truly exceptional medical care!

PROS: Amazing, caring, thorough staff
CONS: sadly there aren't too many places like this!
