A snake ...do not usePosted by radar822 on 07/15/2008\r\n\r\nI selected him to do some routine plumbing service (replace a shower valve) because he was an in-town business. I like to support local businesses. My mistake was not asking for an estimate...I just figured he'd be competitive with other plumbers. I know that plumbers usually range in around $75-$90/hour for labor. I was not at home the day of the service and left a check with my son. When I came home later that day, the bill was for $550! On the bill was an itemization of the labor, at 2 1/2 hours, plus a few miscellaneous parts totalling no more than $30 tops. Do the math and you will see that he charged me $395 in labor, or $158/hour!!!! Upon calling him, he claims that it is a flat rate that any plumber would charge -and some would charge more. He suggested I call other plumbers and I'd see that they all get a flat rate and that some would be $700-$800. I did call three other plumbers: one fairly large, and two smaller operations like his. They all said it was an hourly rate and that it typically take 2-3 hours.for the labor. I purposely asked, ""is it a flat rate"", and they all reiterated that it is by the hour. I again called Jim and he got quite belligerent saying that what they quote on the phone and what they will actually charge once they get there are two different things. Clearly, he made me pay for two people, one of whom I believe is an apprentice that he had with him on his intitial visit. I asked him to reconsider his charges relative to the invoice on two occasions...he ademently and angrily refused, even though I proved his challenge that his charges were way out of bounds realtive to other plumbers. Use this snake at your own risk. And if you think that geeting a quote first will prohibit him from doing this to you...remember what he said about quoted prices and what a plumber will actually charge. Clearly, he uses that tactic after providing a quote. \r\n\r\n
