Romantic candle lit ambiance. The BEST pork chop and pasta. Right next to Paul Revere's House. Please do go to impress your date.

We recently lived in Boston for four years and for whatever reason always found Carmen's closed as we cruised the North End for food adventures. Having left Boston and returned for a visit, we walked in late one afternoon and was seated immediately, being politely warned that our table was reserved for someone else a reasonably period later.
Had a great and exceptional meal and wonderful service.
Have since been back several times when visiting Boston - with reservations that were honored - and our first reaction was only reinforced.
Hope they keep it up!
Thank you all whoever the three blond ladies who took care of us were, as well as the chefs in the very cramped kitchen are.

My bf and I had planned to go to Carmen for dinner and he made reservations early in the week for Friday night. We arrived on time and gave the hostess our name. She then told us 1 second and proceeded to call someone, lost the call and called the person back. In the meantime, 2 other people came into the restaurant. She immediately said hello to them and said just a moment. We had now been at the door for about 7 min. She then told them "right this way." To which I responded, "I don't understand?" The couple responded, "Oh we have a 8:00 reservation." To which my bf said, "we do too." They responded "oh gosh, this doesn't make sense." The hostess had already walked away and led them to what we thought was our table. We then asked if we could just sit at the bar. She told us that she had "just spoken on the phone with someone who would like to sit there." (You mean the people who called AFTER we were in the restaurant for 10 minutes? AFTER we made a reservation 3 days ago?!) She took us to our table which was on the other side of the curtain blocking the door. Anytime the door opened it was absolutely freezing. We had been sitting for a moment when another table opened up in the back. We asked the hostess if we could move, she walked away, turned around quickly and said "thats being reserved." The couple JUST LEFT! I then said " do we need to specify in the future where we want to sit when making a reservation?" To which she responded, "Its a small restaurant." (No kidding! Its super romantic thats why we had come. There are now 3 OPEN tables!) She then said, "we have a lot of regulars that we cater to." I said, "Oh, so what about the new people that come to Carmen? Tough luck?" She then looked at me, smirked and said ENJOY YOUR DINNER. We left. In the tough economic times its people like this that will ruin a business. Why would I spend my money at a place where I'm treated as a 2nd class diner bc the hostess didn't like me? Horrible!

I?ve never written a review for anything online before, but after reading the review below, I felt compelled to share my experience to balance things out.

My wife and I stumbled upon Carmen one evening this past winter during a pouring rain, and we were pleasantly surprised. The restaurant was small and busy, but they fit us in regardless after a small wait.

The food was absolutely delicious and the service was pleasant. We?ve returned twice since, and although the servers are not falling on your every word, we?ve never found fault with them in comparison to other North End restaurants.

The menu is an unusual gathering of unique dishes. The appetizers are to die for. Don?t go here for the typical pasta and lasagna!

Showed up at Carmen for my 9:00 reservation for 2. Seated at the bar, supposedly to wait for our table, 15 minutes later, the hostess finally came over to tell us she can " offer us this bar table, however if we don't want it she will offer it to someone else at the bar" - confused I asked her what our options were, she said, we are running 25 minutes behind, so we would need to wait outside. No apologies, not even an apologic tone. Given the option to either, wait in the rain or sit at the bar and eat, we took the option to eat at the bar. Our waitress, was nice, still since she was also attending the bar, it was really hard for her to fully serve us. The food was average, at best, nothing to write home about. The waitress never asked if we were done dining, instead we were rushed and given a check by another waitress, and no one explained that they do not serve dessert. So many amazing restaurants in the North End, and this is not one of them.

If you actually want to eat don't go here. I had made a reservation for 4 (my parents, my husband and myself) for 8pm. We called to reconfirm at lunch and then called at 7:45 to check in and see how busy they were. We were told everything with our reservation was fine. When we arrived the hostess advised we would have a 20 minute wait. 30 minutes later she advised that there was another table of 4 that was ahead of us and then we would be next, maybe another 15 minutes. Our reservation was not honored but the hostess kept telling different people in our party different stories. If you like being lied to and not eating then this is the place for you.

I've lived in the North End for over 5 years now, but have somehow never managed to find this small, off-the-beaten path gem until recently. It has quickly become my favorite place. I see some people on this site have complained about how small the dining room is and that there is no place to wait. It's funny, but I find that to be one of the charming things about this intimate little slice of heaven. If you are anti-social, don't want to get cozy with those around you and enjoy a warm atmosphere, in both ambience and attitude, try somewhere else. CARMEN has a broad menu with decent portions and great wine (only beer and wine, no liquor). While the food and atmosphere are top rate, the service is the best part. The people that work at CARMEN love being there. They love food and they love their customers. It's exactly what a small Italian restaurant is supposed to be. Try CARMEN once and you will want to make it a regular haunt.

Easily one of the best meals out I have ever had. A friend who had been to Carmen recently let me know a little of what to expect in advance. If you have to wait for a while the entry way can be an uncomfortably tight squeeze but once you get inside its easy to see why so many people want to come here. That?s what she said, and after experiencing it myself I couldn?t agree more. Heeding her advice, my girlfriend and I made reservations in order to secure one of the very limited number of tables which fill Carmen?s candlelit and cozy exposed brick interior. We arrived 15 mins early so the hostess took down my phone number directing us to a nearby wine bar where we could avoid standing in the crowded entrance way or freezing to death outside the door. Our table was ready exactly 10 mins beyond our reservation time as promised so after pounding what was left of our glasses of wine we headed back and were seated immediately. The menu isn?t very extensive but it?s definitely a quality versus quantity type of deal here. Everything we ordered was excellent. The olive oil for bread dipping had a notably rich and authentic olive taste which explained the lack of peppers or various spices found in most others I?ve come across. The marinated olives included three varieties all of which I claimed to be my favorite at one point. It was difficult to focus on the olives since our grilled flat bread arrived at the same time and was probably the best thing I?ve ever eaten with my hands. We shared both of our entrees. The Seared Scallops were right on. Slightly crisp outside and al dente, but not over cooked inside. A butternut squash risotto backdrop made the perfect compliment. The Linguini and Clams came in a powerfully tasty red sauce which allowed for a moment to sit back, rub my belly, and consider just how great everything was that we?d just taken in. If you enjoy great food, eat here!

Arrived on time and was seated immediately... right in front of the entrance. The cold air on my back wasn't such an issue, but getting knocked in the back of the head several times by incoming diners, who literally walk in directly behind you, was pretty aggravating. Carmen has absolutely nowhere for freshly arriving guests to wait, so they stand flush to your table. The management doesn't seem to mind taking a large amount of money off of you for this "quaint" experience, but after several years of dining in the North End, I know the difference between normal crowded restaurant conditions, and being taken advantage of. If you must eat here, make sure you get a good table... or don't be afraid to leave.
Incidentally, the food was fine, and the service was attentive and all smiles.... but you can have a much better time elsewhere.

First off, I would like to say that the service was fantastic here. Our waitress was lovely, very attentive, didn't rush us at all. Now, the downside. I ordered the crespelle with bolognese sauce, and it was so salty I couldn't eat it. In addition, it was lukewarm. I told the waitress, who was very nice about bringing it back, and assured me that they would make a new one. However, the second one, though hot, was incredibly salty as well -- it was obviously in the sauce. The man at the table next to us ordered the same thing and commented that he hadn't liked it much either. After sending back the dish one time and then eating only a few bites the second time, we weren't comped anything on the bill, which I thought was a little cheeky on the part of the management. My husband's main course, duck and winter vegetables over pasta, was very nice. We ordered a selection of small plates to start, and they were OK, but mostly tasted like they came straight out of a can onto the plate. It's a shame, because I really wanted to like this place. The decor is lovely and inviting, and the wine list is good. I'm not sure I'd go back though.

A few weeks ago, my family and I were traveling through Boston as tourists and were busy hiking along the Freedom Trail when we decided to stop and grab something to eat. We were surrounded by great looking Italian places when my wife spotted Carmen's and wanted to eat there. I popped my head in the door and asked if they were "kid-friendly" and they quickly welcomed us right in, grabbed a high-chair for our toddler, and even helped my find a place to park our stroller.

The service was fantastic and the food was amazing. They had a good wine list and made a very refreshing, frozen, peach bellini. We went early (around 5:30 pm), but the staff was friendly and everything about our experience was perfect!

This is my first review, so I will try to be as candid as possible.

I wanted to take my girlfriend to a nice Italian restaurant. After reviewing City Search, Carmen appeared highly rated. Friday afternoon, I called for a Friday evening reservation. To my surprise, the hostess said an 8:30 reservation was available. I made it clear that I wanted a "seat", as opposed to the bar seating. A friend of mine had mentioned that the Bar seating was next to the front entrance and on a cold night you would always receive a draft from patrons entering and exiting. I made this clear to the hostess.

We arrived promptly at 8:30, but were rudely told that our table was not ready, and that the hostess would call us, or to come back in approximately 20 - 30 min. We headed to a nearby bar to grab a drink and wait for our table. After 30 minutes went by and not hearing from the waitress, we called the restaurant. We were told that our "bar seat" would be available. Confused, I reiterated to our hostess that we had reserved a "non bar seat", and asked her how long it would take. She rudely ignored my request, and again mentioned that a "bar seat" would be available in 30 Min. After some more arguing going back and forth, we were finally seated at 10:15 PM at a "non bar" seat.

We ordered the Penne and the scallops, and both were excellent. The waitress apologized for the delay, and provided good service. The atmosphere was pleasant, and the restaurant had a nice interior

So, I would definitely recommend the food, but be aware of the service on the front end. I am not sure if regular customers were seated while we left the restaurant to wait for our table, but I found it odd that the hostess was not honest or upfront about what was going on.

Went to Carem because my date wanted to try it. We had a reservation for 8pm on a Friday night (expected a 'short' wait on a Friday), and arrived early. Politely asked the hostess when we could be seated at 8:30 and again at 9 - she completely TORE into me and my date both times! Finally got seated at 9:15 and the waitress apologized for the OWNER's actions towards us! The OWNER chewed me out! The waitress claimed she often apologizes for the owners attitude towards patrons! Don't waste your money at this place - there are SO many other better places in the North End. Service was the worst I have ever had, and the food was moderate.

I've been to Carmens several times, and every time they astound me with the hospitality of their staff, they're charming ambiance, and the superb quality of their food. I find it ingenious how they fuse rich ingredients together to make some of the most delicious entrees I have ever had. Plus they certainly have the best sangria in town! The wait may be a bit, even with a reservation but the food, service, and dining experience are well worth it.

Thanks to our waitress, I think her name was Amy, we had an amazing time at Carmen. Although we were seated next to the kitchen, her expertise with the menu, wine and her personality made us forget all about the bright lights shining out on us. We had an unbeliveably delicious meal based on her suggestions (clams, half orders of pasta, steak and tuna). She convinced us to order a bottle of wine a costing a little more than we wanted to spend, but it was worth it. We have told all our friends and coworkers how awsome Carmen is. The only drawback was the owner screaming at a waitress like a maniac because some she broke a glass. Looking at how busy Carmen, and how attentive the staff was i think he can afford to buy some more glasses.

Camen's rude and ill-mannered waitstaff left a lasting and distasteful impression on us. The food was good, the atmosphere was cozy. However, mid-way through our dinner the waitress asked us to "hurry up" so she could "turn the table over." Appalled, even the couple sitting at the table across from us had asked the waitress if she was joking, and she replied, "no." Don't expect to order dessert since they rush you out before you've even finished your dinner. Needless to say, we will never return.

Cons: Rude, Ill-mannered, Rude

We had another great dinner at Carmen last night. I've been there three times and every meal has been delicious and impeccably presented. Wine was awesome, service was informally friendly. Candles everywhere! So cute. But use your common sense when trying this teeny tiny little place...make your reservations for later in the evening and you won't feel rushed out the door, don't be miffed if they ask you to wait outside (where else would you wait??), and EVERYBODY knows this place is not recommended for weekend evenings or parties of more than 4...go to Lucca for your big nights out.

Absolutely loved this 2 cute little restaurant, boyfriend and I decided to dine there on a Thurs night made reservations, highly recommend. Food was delicious, comparable to alot of fine dining establishments in Boston but very reasonably priced. 2 salads, 2 entrees and bottle of wine approx 100$ not incl tip, overall wonderfull meal, exc. service. Loved it will definately go back!!! I can imagine people would experience waits on busy nights, Who wouldnt want to dine HERE.... you would worry if the place was empty.... Hello............... call ahead.......

I ate at Carmen the other night. We were seated promptly for our reservation and we had a wonderful meal. The food was outstanding. After we had finished, we remained at the table for five minutes to finish our wine. We knew there were people waiting and were not lingering. However, we did want to finish the wine that we had paid for. Before we could finish our wine, the waitstaff asked us to vacate our table. We were beside ourselves when this happened so we left abruptly, but we've both been fuming about it since. It is clear to me that Carmen books too many reservations and don't allot enough time for each. So people either end up rushed out of the restaurant or not seated until hours after their reservation time. I won't be supporting Carmen with my patronage again until they fix this problem.

I recently went to Carmen restaurant with a small group of friends and what a great time we had. The atmosphere is wonderful and very romantic, should have gone there with a date! The food was wonderful, one of my friends had the crespelle with a wonderful bolognase sauce and my bass was delicious, served with tender calamari in a wine sauce. Highly recommended. Our waitress was very friendly and had great suggestions for both our food and wine. We will all definately be back for more!!!

Very cool atmosphere. However, as many of the other reviews mention, expect to wait for a table - even with a reservation. And it's very tight quarters at the bar where you'll likely have to stand and wait. Also, there was absolutely no apology for being seated 45 minutes after our reservation. Food was OK.

I'm so glad that the North End finally has a place like this. I'm now officially a regular... The restaurant is VERY cozy, quaint and a great place to go any night of the week. It does get crowded and a bit hectic on weekends (plan to wait a few minutes, even with a reservation), but it's well worth it. And the food is to die for...just want the North End needed, a small trattoria with wonderful food and great atmosphere.

I had my first visit to Carmen last week, and, I will definately be back. My date, and I were greeted for our resevation by Carmen herself, who made us feel like old friends imediately. After sitting, the waitress explained some of the dishes on the menu, and we went with all of her recomendations. I had the Lamb Shank, and , my date had a Salmon which was incredible. I very rarely clean my plate, but I did that night. I was also amased the check. I't was so inexpensive! I loved it!!!

I hope that is not the best Boston can offer.
We came at 9 pm as requested, set down at 10, took them 30 minutes to offer a glass of wine while we where waiting (standing by the way).
Aragula salad was OILY and bitter the carpacio was the smallest I have ever seen and no traces of marinating at all - not a carpacio.
The entree's where OK but tiny pricy and salty.
We are from europe and we hope to find better places in Boston than Carmen.

Carmen is your standard tiny North End restaurant with a more progressive, non-traditional menu. Very good food and reasonably priced. Very nice people. Very slow service. Painfully slow. Plan on being here over 2 hours, even though they don't serve dessert. I would recommend it if you don't have any plans afterwards...don't expect reservations to be honored.

A wonderful, tiny addition to the North End. The food was excellent, the staff were friendly and very well informed. The only down side is that Carmen does not offer a desert menu. However, after the amazing lamb I had it was no great hardship to forgoe desert for once!

Bill Bradley's superb creations blend Italian cuisine with a bit of Californian flair and are sure to pleasure your palate. The restaurant has a very cosy atmosphere, and the wine list is excellant. Be patient waiting for your table...the restaurant is small and reservations can get backed up - but it's worth it!
