Wonderful shop with many items that will excite you. I find the best cakes and cookies come from the North End.

One week before Christmas Eve I ordered 18 cupcakes to be picked up at noon on Christmas Eve day. I paid $41 in cash and pre-selected an assortment of 10 different cupcake flavors. I was assured that my exact order would be ready at noon and that the cupcakes would be baked fresh that day.

My order was not ready when I arrived at LuLu's at 12:30 on Christmas Eve. There were only 5 different types of cupcakes on display and the woman behind the counter told me that I could only get those few flavors. The saleswoman was rude and unapologetic --- she kept complaining about the fact that "her help and the baker" did not come in that day. When I asked when the cupcakes were made, she told me they were made that morning (even though I reminded her that she had just said her baker was not there). Had the woman smiled and apologized and perhaps offered another solution to compensate for the situation, I might not be writing this review. Her lack of acknowledgement regarding my frustration and disappointment was incredible --- I don't think it's unfair to assume that a bakery will have a $41 special order ready-to-go with the exact contents you selected and were promised! And, the $41 pre-paid amount was supposed to include many of the more costly specialty flavors that were unavailable. Instead, it was all about the LuLu's saleswoman and the fact that she was shorthanded. I didn't lose my temper or raise my voice or even make a scene, but it didn't stop the saleswoman from giving me and my mother a dirty look as we exited the store. And, to make matters even worse, the frosting on several of the cupcakes was smashed/dented because they were not firmly placed in their boxes.

Absolutely horrible customer service...more aggravation than it was worth. I should have gone to Mike's or Modern's.

So, my friend Evan and I searched high and low for a great place on the North End to grab a pastry. Naturally, we went to Mike's Pastries first, but they had been ransacked since it was Saturday and barely had anything good left except Gelato. Because of this, we searched a little further and finally found this little place called Lulu's Pastries. We both went in and almost passed out looking at the amazing selection of this place. I noticed that some of the stuff was wrapped up and asked if they were closing and the lady behind the counter said yes, but I could pick something to go before she finished. I perused and saw a great selection of Red Velvet Cupcakes and had to have one. Even though these are a delicacy, I asked the price and found that one cupcake was under 3 bucks, which is amazing. I bought one cupcake, but the woman behind the counter was very nice and said "I'll give you some extra ones" and ended up giving me not only an extra Red Velvet Cupcake, but a little Vanilla Filled Chocolate Cupcake with "Lulu's" spelled out in frosting on top. Great place, unbeatable prices, simply sinful treats - JUST GO!!!

Pros: location (close to T), food, prices, customer service

Cons: not a lot of parking and is kind of hidden compared to other pastry shops on the North End

Lulu's is a great alternative to canolis and other usual dessert suspects in the North End. The cupcakes are always fresh and scrumptious. My boyfriend's favorite is the red velvet, he thinks they're light as air and delicious. My favorite is the vanilla butter cream, followed by the chocolate heart. The chocolate heart isn't exactly a cupcake, although it looks like one. It's a chocolate shell, with a chocolate ganache inside, topped with whipped cream and a cakey, brownie like chocolate heart.

The prices are reasonable. (Sidebar: I've been to KickAss cupcakes in Davis Square, and 15 cupcakes set me back $50!! I didn't even think their cupcakes came close to kicking you know what!).

My only complaint is the service. There are definitely friendly employees there, but the one who sticks out, is possibly the owner. She's got long dark hair and looks like you owe her money as you walk in the door. You cannot mistake her for the others! On my last visit I ordered 2 red velvets and a chocolate heart, it rang up to $12 which I thought was excessive. When I inquired about the prices, I discovered that she put 2 hearts in the box instead of 1. She just ignored me. Rude!

Although, I'll continue to go there for a cupcake when I have a craving for a cupcake, I no longer look forward to it as much as I once did. Poor service is generally a big let down.

This bakery is devine and the service is great. I have not been dissapointed yet. Try a great iced latte or buttercream frosted cupcake. Perfect alternative to the oh so trite cannoli the neighborhood is famous for.
