When I moved to Plymouth I was eager to check out their library. The South Street library is quite modern and clean but seems to be a lot of wasted and under utilized space. I've been there numerous times when I was the only patron in there surrounded by lots of staff! I must say I do like quiet in a library but I keep thinking what exactly are my tax dollars doing going to this 'museum'? I think many people are using the Internet for research, and book clubs seem to be at an all time high. I'm a bit old fashioned and still like to check a book out--unlike my children and grandchildren who would NEVER go to a library--yet they are all avid readers.

One day when I was there the Director Dinah came out and yelled at one of the staff members! Her voice was loud and very demeaning and her language not very appropriate for a public setting. I was quite taken a back at her lack of finesse. Perhaps she didn't realize i was there but even if I wasn't I can never imagine any one in management speaking to an employee that way. It was nasty and very unprofessional.

After the Director stomped away--much like a two year old with a tantrum--I told the employee how awful I felt. She was clearly embarrassed and apologized to me! I can't imagine that SHE apologized for her bosses behavior. I told her, "Boss or no boss, no one has the right to demean another human being in that manner." And the poor woman said to me, "You get used to it!" My goodness! It was like I was talking to a battered wife! She was making excuses for inexcusable behavior--even if it had been done privately.

So my applause to the staff for working under such hostile work conditions. And now I'm very upset that my tax dollars pay that particular Director's salary! I had considered reporting it to the town manager or selectmen but it seems all they do is cover for each other.

This library is huge. They offer the nicest childrens room and staff. The programs they run for small children to get them interested in the workings of the library. The Summer program this year was so much fun for all ages. Story time is a blast.

I am not that impressed with the main branch of the Public Library. First the selection of new books is not as good as those at the smaller Manomet branch; second they are not open on weekends in the summer; third in order to reserve a room I can only do it in 3 month increments which makes no sense to me. I have never found the staff personable. In fact on one occasion I had words with one of them.
