I have to eat at this place about once every five or six years to remind myself how horrible the food is at this restaurant. The staff are nice enough, and the portion sizes are good, but incredibly overpriced given the quality or lack thereof.

We went tonight (on a Friday), and the bread was warmed but had obviously been frozen and then warmed in the oven. I could see maybe getting bread like this on a Monday when it is kind of slow. Not okay then, but understandable.

My wife got the caprice salad and couldn't even eat it, that's how bad it was. I got a house salad that tasted like it had been in the freezer for three or four days. Nothing like tasty freeze dried lettuce. No fresh vegetables here, thank you very much.

The pasta dish I ordered wasn't horrible, just kind of disappointing.

Polcari's is overpriced Italian food for undescriminating patrons who don't really care about price or quality.

I have been here a few times and it has been great everytime I've gone. The restaurant is huge with a ton of seating and the dining area is a sort of Italian-American theme. The place is always clean and the service there is outstanding. The host is always very friendly, pleasant and attentive and that carries over to the waitstaff. I have gotten a couple of different italian dishes as well as their pizza. They don't have an extensive kids menu, but if they like pasta then I would recommend getting one of the dinner plates and splitting it. I have done this with two little girls and there is always plenty of food. The bread that they serve before the meal is always hot and fresh. All in all this is just a great family friendly restaurant with great food and even better service.

Having grown up in the North End, I am somewhat of an expert on what constitutes "like Mama used to make." But curiosity compelled me to check out Polcari's in Saugus. The theme-park-like atmosphere was the first indication that the cuisine was not their first priority. Don't get me wrong...I like being entertained as much as the next person. But when I'm in the mood for a great culinary experience, I want less flash and more substance. So I ignored the wait staff dressed like stereotypical gangsters, and the statue of St. Anthony very much displayed like Mickey at Disney World. With restrained skepticism, I ordered the Veal Parm. What greeted me was a veal cutlet atop a bed of linguine smothered in a sauce of chunky tomatoes. I took my first bite, and instead of tasting gravy infused with garlic and basil, I tasted...nothing. Nada. Zip. If you find Ragu and Chef Boyardee palatable, this is the place to go. If you're looking for a fun evening out, and don't mind mediocre Italian food, knock your lights out. I, for one, will continue to make my own gravy on Sundays, and stick to the little Italian joints that have stuck true to their roots.

Pros: Nice atmosphere

Cons: So-so service, the food

What a waste of money...The portions are enormous...too bad you won't want to eat them. I haven't had a worse meal in recent memory. Bland, flavorless food, sticky tables, rushed service. Ugh!!

I've been to Polcaris often. Without having to trudge into the North End is nice. The food is excellent, always hot, always fresh, and the portions are enormous.

A "little" pricey... but not unreasonable. Their sauce is to die for, and their lasagna is out of this world. I kept eating, even though I was so full I could have exploded !!

The waitstaff there are extremely attentive, the menu selections are great, and you'll looooove the bread.

Overall, if you live on the North Shore, and you want really good Italian, without driving into Boston, choose Polcaris. You won't regret it, and you'll probably go back.

Good eats !!
