DatBoys Data Recovery is by far and away the best data recovery company in the Greater Boston Ma area . I took my hard drive to 2 other companies. I asked the other places if they had references. They told me they weren't allowed to under privacy laws or some such thing. They had it for 2 months each. I was periodically calling and one place seemed as though it was never open. Those 2 experiences cost me hundreds of dollars. I should have gone with my gut. I was resigned to losing my data but I couldn't throw the hard drive away. Months later I was at a computer store called Microcenter in Cambridge Ma, while discussing computers and hard drives with a MicroCenter employee named Ed. You can't miss Ed he is 40's with a long ponytail. He seemed to be the 'go to' guy for the customers and employees. I mentioned my earlier problem. Ed suggested DatBoys. He said that if my data was recoverable DatBoys could do it. I was glad I had kept my dead hard drive. I contacted DayBoys. I spoke to the manager named Chris. I could tell he was passionate about his field. He emailed me letters of recommendation and told me I could call the people that wrote them, I decided to call his bluff. I did call a couple of the numbers in the letters and I did speak to 2 guys who praised Chris for recovering their data. One man credits Chris for saving his business. This guy said he used another company in Cambridge Ma. not far from DatBoys called Tech...something or other but went and got his drive when he heard about Chris too. I guess Chris wasn't bluffing. I decided to bring my drive into DatBoys. Chris is a friendly guy but up front with information. He said he wanted me to understand the rudimentary process of data recovery. Information the other 2 companies I went to didn't give me. I told Chris my story. Chris said that if it was a successful recovery he would see if he could reduce the final charge by the amount I'd already spent at the two other companies. Chris said he needed to verify my story by calling the other companies. I didn't have a problem with that. Chris also said that my data could take many times longer than it would have the first time, if I had brought it directly to DatBoys, and that there was the increased potential the 2 other companies may have physically damage the hard drive further maybe even to the point it wasn't recoverable.
I felt comfortable enough and now educated enough to proceed with DatBoys and specifically with Chris.
The DatBoys contract is a no nonsence & easy to read & no lawyers review is required. There are several levels of service. I chose the Standard Service of 5-7 business days. Chris told me he explains to all customers that the 5-7 business days is a guideline when there are no extensive issues to deal with but, that if it was my data that I wanted he would employ his years of experince and every possible technique he knows to get the data and if there are extensive issues it could even take a couple of months but it wouldn't be any additional costs. He pointed out 2 of the letters as evidence to his assertion. I had nothing to lose so I agreed. Three days later Chris called and said that he felt as though he would be successful and asked if I'd have some patience and that he would contact me in 2 weeks. I agreed. About 3 weeks later Chris called and said he had some good news and that he was in the actual recovering phase and that he would have the data onto a new hard drive in a day or two more. Well, needless to say I was ecstatic of the news and told my wife. Three days later I went into pickup my data. It wasn't cheap but paying for Chris's experience and dedication was worth it. Chris had recovered years of data from my wife's User Account and my User Account that was on Windows XP Pro. The files we lost included family pictures, home movies, years of Word docs and some were very important documents, once in a lifetime correspondences, tax information, legal documents and music files galore. My wife wasn't as pleased with the price of $1,875 but when the math is done....$1,875 divided by 39,679 files we've accumulated over the years worked out to be about .05 a file...I think that was well worth it.
I don't believe a word these other reviewers have written. I will end with this. On the DatBoys website is a Better Business Bureau Seal. It's an A+ Accreditation . I clicked it and it goes to the Better Business Bureau's website and shows information on DatBoys.
I read what it takes to display that Seal. That Seal says it all. Don't believe reviews...even mine. Do your own research. I'm sure you'll agree with me.

I would rate this business 0 out of 5 if it were possible, but 1 is the lowest rating.

I had such a horrible experience with this data recovery shop that I've decided to write this review, so no one else has to go through the same experience.

First of all, it is painful to simply talk to Dat Boyz. The owner (and as far as I can tell, only employee) thinks that he is some slick businessman with all of his bit talk, but he really comes off as a pitiful cheap used car salesman. I should have gone with my gut instinct after meeting him face to face, turn around and walk right out the door. For whatever reason, I signed a contract and gave him my business. Big mistake!

Second, it took SEVERAL MONTHS for me to get my hard drive back. He is terrible at communication, and I felt as though my business meant nothing to him. He made many commitments to call me back with estimates, timelines, etc. Not once did he ever call me back as promised. And every time I called him for an update, it was like he had never met me before. He never had a clue about the status of my case but would promise to look into it and get back to me. Hey buddy, you have a small mom-and-pop shop. You don't know who I am after receiving dozens of complaint calls from me? Even if you have a terrible memory, your computer is right in front of you...just look me up!!!

I know the real reason that he pulled these tactics. He simply never worked on my case and knew that he had no progress to report. They were obviously delay tactics.

The only reason that I got any results from him at all is because I started making threats. That got his attention, and he started working on my case months later.

Then, he gave a ridiculously high estimate, which I knew was BS. I was being taken advantage of, so I told him to forget about it and I would forgo my deposit and take my business elsewhere. He called me back minutes later with a much more reasonable price.

Then he wanted to charge me a ridiculous price for a new drive to transfer the recovered data to. I told him that I had a brand new, unused hard drive that I would provide him to store the data. He said that "the lab" would not do this, "but he would try to ask". I know that other data recovery labs are perfectly willing to do this, so I told him that I would only pay for data recovery on the condition that he accept my hard drive. Of course, "the lab" agreed.

Honestly, folks, you cannot trust this guy as far as you can throw him. The extent of his lying became so ridiculous that I started recording our conversations, both on the phone and in person. I know that this does not hold up in Mass courts, but I figured that I could at least use it against him and show him that I caught him in his own lies.

Heed my warning and go elsewhere!!!
