went there once years ago, wouldn't go back again. i was new in town back then, and thought the line outside the restaurant meant something. while i waited hesitantly (just had a really bad experience w/chinese-japanese food the night before), i peeked into the patrons' dishes thru the window, and they didn't look that bad. just until we got our own food.

the rolls were sloppy (the nori--wrapping seaweed--soggy); sushi not the freshest. i seldom order cooked food items in japanese restaurants, but i did that night--bad decision. the curry rice was 10 times worse than what i could make (my eyes closed!) with the "just add water" packaged kinds i get from supermarket. if they used that i actually wouldn't have complained. i really didn't know what that faded brown, watery pool of sauce was (i really want to describe the visual but people will be grossed out by that); it was just NOT japanese at all.

now that explains the chinese kitchen god statue that stands in front of the restaurant. i'm chinese myself and i totally enjoy chinese food (some "unauthentic" ones included!), but i ABHOR going to japanese-looking places that are served by chinese (or koreans) who are trying to pretend to be something they're not (i.e. don't really have the skills of real sushi chefs). the general outcome is so-so at best, while many fail miserably. why don't they just concentrate on doing well in their own specialties instead?

Pros: none

Cons: why wait for bad food?

As a resident of Brookline, I frequented Fugakyu until I discovered this gem. By far the best miso soup I have ever had. The sushi is of great quality and the establishment is low-key, casual. The decor is simple, but the food is fantastic.
