Sorry about the Tele but the pick-up policy is hardly fine-print. I always went in for routine set-ups, amp repairs, bought a guitar from Ian, tried out some of the best amps I've ever heard. Although they're pretty busy, they'll always take time to answer your questions via phone, e-mail, or in person. The shop does quality work and offers classes so you can do your own set-ups, build guitars/amps. If you need something in a rush, they can most likely take care of you too, for a small rush fee. Specimen also carries products and accessories like strings, cables, knobs, pick-ups, etc. and I'm sure they'd happily order parts for you if you need them too. They offer a Chicagoland Bicycle Federation discount as well. Go to Specimen and not Guitar Center, please! Take advantage of this guitar shop because not every city has one like this.

Pros: Quality wood work, not Guitar Center

Cons: Price can be an issue for some broke musicians, but if you can't afford a set-up, save up and take a class and do it yourself

My first experience with Specimen was a result of signing up for a guitar setup class. Since then, I have taken just about every class they offer and in some cases, multiple times. I have built a custom guitar from scratch and am in the process of building two more. I learned to build a Fender style 100 watt tweed amp and numerous other luthier skills.

Specimen is a fantastic learning resource. Their staff is great and personable. I am constantly figuring out ways to sign up for more classes because I learn so much every time I go there. What I love most is that they are innovative and true artists. They know how to do things well and they pay such close attention to detail.

I couldn't recommend them enough for a) guitar setup, b) luthier education and c) quality products. Anyone who hasn't taken a class at Specimen is losing an opportunity of a life time.

Read the fine print on your claim ticket!! If you dont pick it up in 6 weeks it becomes his!! I got stuck in Austrailia for an extra month (originally I was going to be there for 3 weeks) for work while he repaired my telecaster. I had even given him $200 down payment on the repair work and told him I was going out of town. When I got back he had sold it and kept my $200 as "conciliatory"!!! Ian royally screwed me out of the 1983 American made Telecaster Elite I had had since high school. My first real guitar. And this was after I had already bought an acoustic at his store. You'd think he'd treat his customers with a little more consideration. He could care less and will rip you off if he gets the chance. I can only hope Karma really works.

Pros: none

Cons: dishonest

Owner Ian Schneller offers top-notch service for electric and acoustic stringed instruments. He claims he' "just learning" about vacuum tubes, but don't let that scare you from taking your vintage Fender or Marshall to the best amplifier technician in town. He sets up guitars well and cheaply. A gem.

Specimen is the best place in the city for guitar repair. Ian, the owner and luthier, is awesome and my guitars have never sounded better. Plus, they don't make you wait weeks to get your guitar back. The store is super cool too, full of weird old guitars and Ian's own custom guitars.
