The Scene
Andy's is rarely confused with a concert hall. Comfortably rowdy during most of the working day, it becomes positively hectic by 6pm. If you're going for the music, go later, when the desperately happy white-collar tipplers have grabbed the train home. The food menu ranges from the expected bar fare (pizzas, burgers and sandwiches) to surprisingly tasty salads and platters of ribs and chicken.

The Draw
When the late music set ends, it's only 11 or 12 hours till the next one starts at noon, followed by another at 5pm, and still another after 9pm. No less than 15 different combos take the cluttered stage every week. The jazz itself is an appealing mixture of music, not so much of styles, but of personalities. The venue tends to the mainstream, with bebop and swing-style bands predominating.

The Inside Scoop

  1. Save Money - Cover charges vary, rising on the weekends but manage to stay reasonable. Those under 21 must be accompanied by a guardian.
  2. Know Before You Go - Andy's is popular among musical tourists as well as true jazzers (foreign tourists, primarily from Japan and Europe, made it the place to be in the '80s).

To "colum" you must be mistaken about the smoking, and the website not letting you know about the cover charge. Your story sounds made up and I hope no one takes what you wrote to be true. Get a life.

Ratings_icons How LUCK Chicago is!!

TXjar

You have no idea how Lucky you are to have a Jazz bar like Andy's. Back in the 90's we would go there & enjoyed the JAZZ. Joe was the doorman then. We moved to Houston, Texas & we just don't have such a fine place like Andy's. If you want good Seafood go next door & then come to Andy's for munchies, drinks & the BEST JAZZ! When we head North we make sure to stop by there. IT IS A MUST!!!
LUCKY, LUCKY, people of Chicago!!!

Pros: THE JAZZ, Price

Cons: Average food.

Ratings_icons Great atmosphere, jazz!

As a devoted customer at Andy's I had to reply to a comment left by "colum." I too have been going to Andy's for years, and have enjoyed myself everytime. As far as the hostess "exhaling from her cigarette" I think you must be confused, because since January 1 of this year, no one can smoke in restaurants in the state of Illinois, so that must have just been a fabrication to add drama to your story. Yes, there are cover charges to come in.... how do you think the band gets paid? Anyways, I have always found the service to be good, and the staff enjoyable. There is an excellent variety of food options to choose from, a large drink menu, and the atmosphere is always lively and entertaining. Most of all, it has excellent musicians and groups who come to play. Andy's Jazz Club is still an excellent place to go!

Ratings_icons I'm sorry to burst the bubble, but Andy's Jazz Club is now officially off the list.

I've been a regular at Andy's Jazz Club since I was just out of high school. I regularly go to Andy's during the week for a good jazz session and a great wine list. In recent years, however, Andy's has been losing its charm. What's worse is, of the last few visits, each one was a bit worse than the previous. I'm sorry to burst the bubble, but Andy's Jazz Club is now officially off the list.

This past weekend my wife made reservations for dinner at 8p on a Saturday night. We arrived promptly and were told by the hostess, "Dat'll be twenty bucks. Each." She exhaled her cigarette and outstretched her palm. "My husband and I made reservations this afternoon," replied my wife. I added, "We've never had a cover charge when we've come for dinner..." Rolling her eyes and putting her hand on her hip she explains, "Dinner is optional. Da cover charge is not." I was seething as I grabbed my wife's hand and turned to leave.

Nowhere on the amateur looking & poorly maintained website does it specify a cover charge. Not when my wife made the reservation did the host specify a cover charge. What happened to Andy's Jazz Club?

Pros: Plenty of alternatives within walking distance.

Cons: Attitude & service are terrible.

The music was amazing. The service was average. They seemed not too have the rush time crowd under control. The food was over priced and was not tasty. The entry charge was worth every penny..music ws great.

Ratings_icons THE place for Jazz-Period

klarson_esq

Andy's IS Jazz in Chicago. It always has been. I get in there infrequently. Whenever I go, it always feels like home. If you're from out of town, or in town, sit at the bar and chat with new friends.

Pros: Jazz...Excellent Jazz, friendly

Cons: Hard to Park, can be crowded

Ratings_icons Not for groups?

gardner_girl

Andy's was a great place for atmosphere and wonderful music! The food was excellent and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. HOWEVER, we had a group of 12 and the table service was terrible. We had to repeat requests for drink refills many times (one of our guests asked 5 times for a glass of water) and we waited a ridiculous amount of time for the waitress to return with drinks in general. The dinner was also slow reaching us, but I assume that was due to the large group ordering together. Great place for a couple or foursome, but don't expect them to handle a larger group comfortably. Go before 6:00 p.m. to avoid the cover charge.

Pros: Great music, very good food, not crowded

Cons: slow service, no parking
