My Wife and I were very excited on Sunday, July 25 to use our last of 4 Groupon??s that we purchased for Zapatista. However, when we arrived for dinner at 4:30, we were met with a sign on the door that stated that Zapatista was hosting a private party from 3pm until 10pm. I called on the following day to speak with the manager (George) at Zapatista to determine if it would be okay if we used the Groupon the next business day. George told me that he would not authorize the use of the Groupon after I politely explained our circumstances. He was very rude and unprofessional as he told me that he didn??t care if we patronized his restaurant again. My previous experiences at Zapatista were excellent, but I do not plan to dine at this establishment again! I believe the manager of a restaurant sets the expectations of service for the staff. Is this the way a valued patron should be treated?

My mom and I attempted to eat dinner at this establishment earlier this evening. I live about a block away from the restaurant and this was my first attempt to dine there. Unfortunately, the staff ignored our presence. I am African American and when my mom and I stepped in we waited to be helped. The hostess proceeded to help a Caucasian individual who came in after us. My and mom I stepped up to the desk to make sure they knew we were waiting and another hostess proceeded to help another Caucasian individual who came in the restaurant after us and stepped up to the desk after us. At that point, I asked to speak with the manager. I was surprised to learn that the manager was standing behind the desk the whole time. I explained to him that we had been waiting to be seated and two individuals who came in after us were helped first. The manager looked at me like I was crazy and simply said do you need something. No apology for the poor service...nothing. I was stunned. People can make honest mistakes and it is possible the hostesses simply were not paying attention. However, the response I received from the manager was unacceptable. Needless to say, my mom and I left the restaurant and went to eat a fabulous meal next door at Exposure Tapas.

June 2008, went to Zapatista for dinner. Had the fajita for two (chicken and tilapia). And three margaritas (regular sized). The bill was around 80 dollars! The chicken was tasteless. The tilapia was very salty and ?fishy? tasting, a sign that it was on the very opposite spectrum of fresh. The fajita came out with just the tortillas (3 tiny ones) and the meat. We were told we have to order the toppings separately. When we did the side was: a tablesppon of cheese, a tablespoon of lettuce, a tablespoon of guacamole. These were to be shared by fajitas for two adults. It was the worst rip off I?ve experienced in a restaurant in a long time. I will never go back and will inform all out friends of this. If you need dinner, skip this place!

If you love Mexican food, you have to go to this restaurant. It is delicious! I had to write a review because of all the negative comments about the food. Yes, the service is mediocre and you will often have to remind them twice of a request and the restaurant is noisy. Try to go at a less crowded time and you will not be disappointed. I highly recommend the carna al sada steak, the guacomole with jicama, and the chocolate soufle dessert, yum!

Service was great. Drinks- GREAT but food is horrible. I live in the South Loop, 3rd time there (now i remember why I only go once a year) and every time I go there I swear I will never return. My enceladas was served cold, and my wife's chicken tasted like carboard... the corn tortillas was the size of a quarter???? went home and was much more satified with a peanutbutter and jelly sandwich!
People are crazy to waste their money here!!!!!!

This is by far the best mexican food my wife and I have ever had. I used to travel for a living and love mexican food so I would try different mexican foods in different cities, and this is the best I have ever had. We recently moved to the south loop and thought we would try it out. The fajitas, tacos, even the burritos are excellent. You must try this place out. I recommend the fajitas, they are truly unique. If you like tequila, get a tequila flight!! Friday and Saturday nights you should probably have a reservation. Hope to see you there!!

Took friends from out of town here. We had a party of five. The service was friendly and good. The food was good and fresh. It tends to be on the spicy side, especially the guacamole. It's a bit pricey for what you get, but that's the south loop for you. All in all, I can think of better places, but I would recommend this one if you want Mexican food and are in the south loop.

I had made reservations for 8 at this restaurant on a sunday afternoon at 4 pm. I arrived on time and i had to wait an half hour for my table to by set up. When they finally sey my table, it was for 6! When my guest arrived my snobby waitress took our drink orders and it took at least 15 minutes to bring 5 adult and 3 kid drinks. When everone ordered their food it took them a hour and 15 minutes to bring the food and it was cold! Then the server didnt bring 2 entrees. She never came back to give us drink refills but when it was time for the bill she brought it quickly and it had athe added gratuity that she didnt deserve because of her poor service. When everyone was done and was conversating one of the hostesses said we had to leave because our children were too loud ( ages 1, 2 and 3). I will NEVER recommend this restaurant to anyone or return because the service was horrible and this is definately not a family restaurant!!!!

My husband & I live in the S.Loop and thought we'd found a great new mexican place..so not the case. We have been there twice and will NEVER go back. The 1st time we went was a Sat. evening, we had reservations for 7. We got there and were seated immediately, and then the trouble started. Our waiter couldn't have possibly rushed us more. Before we even had our coats off he was asking us what we wanted to drink, did we want an appetizer, which we hate. We tried to make it clear we weren't in a hurry, but, we were literally in and out in less than an hour. There were people still eating when we left, and they were there when we arrived! We swore to never go again, however, a friend wanted to go for a birthday dinner so we went again..again it was a disaster. The food was cold, the waiter kept forgetting about us, and, never brought the desert we ordered. After that we can safely say we will never waste another evening in Zapatista.

i was really looking forward to trying this beautiful restaurant and i was so VERY disappointed. we sat and waited forever even though they weren't that busy (i think our waiter had a huge section and was overseated even though the restaurant wasn't really hopping). the salsa was ok with a smoky flavor and the chips were pretty warm, so that was promising...but our entrees were cold, flavorless and BORING. nothing interesting about the food whatsoever. our waiter really overlooked us even after his section emptied out. save your money and go somewhere authentic. this experience sucked.

After making a reservation to take a friend for her Birthday I read some of the reviews on this website and started to panic! Luckily we didn't cancel the reservations!

This was a fantastic dining experience. The food was delicious, the guacamole - out of this world, the drinks were tasty and effective....the dessert....kept 5 ladies happy! The service was friendly and efficient. the food came out quickly and we were attended to by multiple members of the waitstaff!

I will go back to this resturaunt as often as I can find the time. I am craving it already and I was just there on Friday!

GO GO GO...it is FANTASTIC!

My wife and I are south loop residents and have been here twice. The first time was 3 days after it opened. Service was horrendous, but we gave them a pass since it had just opened. We went again last night with some friends and again, the service was horrible. The place is so loud that I could barely hear the waiter! Food was average, both time my burritos came out cold. The first time, they came out and offered us free dessert. We ordered dessert, and when the bill came, they charged us for it!! Anyway, if you are looking for good mexican food, head over to Pilsen. This place is just another trendy mexican restaurant with bad service.

My fiance and I went here on a whim one friday night because of the close proximity to our house, and have been back four times in the last two months because we are ADDICTED to the guacamole! It's so fresh and delicious, made to order at a prep table at the edge of the dining area. The Revelucion Margaritas are fantastic as well. The menu items we did try were very much to our liking, but we were usually too full from guac and margaritas! We've also brought along a few other couples as it's a great place for groups as well as couples. We'll be back... hide the avacados!

I had the Ceviche was decent. Had striped bass which was taste, not overdone but the mole sauce that came with it was too strong so it ruined my apetite. Stay away from the coconut desert....sorry can't remember the name. Wine list was not impressive.

Went to Zapatistas last weekend, we arrived a few minutes earlier for our reservations and were seated promptly. The place was jumping, music was loud and energizin. the food was excellent, the ZAPAS appetizers is a great choice. The fajitas and burrito with the creamy chipotle topping was delicious. The Bigote ( Wow what a dink) and mango margarita were excelent. I'm coming back real soon-got the cravings. Service was friendly and very good.

I realize that several people who have reviewed this restaurant have complained about the lack of "stand-bys" of the Mexican variety. If you want standbys, go to Chi-Chi's and have a chimichanga. Regional cuisine is never supposed to resemble the vanilla, mass-produced fare at the chians.I found the guacamole here to be excellent! I enjoyed the menu variety, the decor and the staff!

I really never thought that it was possible to screw up Mexican food as bad as they did. We were left with the feeling that even canned, grocery-store mexican food would've been a vast improvement over the bland, dry, and slightly sweet palate of the dishes we had.
A further downer was that the menu was devoid of the host of Mexican classics that you come to rely on.
For perspective, this was to Adobo what Tang is to real orange juice (without any of Tang's innate good fun).
It's sad because we live in the neighborhood and were really excited to have a good mexican place close by.
The service was pretty laissez-faire too...
The only things Zapatista had going for them were that they weren't expensive and they were really nice...

I have been to this restaurant 4 times since it opened. Everytime (except once) the food has been pretty good. But 3 out 4 times there has been some or the other problem with service, like, server not being prompt, getting wrong dish, dish prepared incorrectly. They always were very apologetic, but I would like to see an improvement. Also, last night, I asked the guy to box my food for me and he totally forgot about it. This is after the got me the wrong entree and then replacement took forever and my friends were all done with their dinner by the time my entree finally arrived. Desperately need better communication from staff.

A friend and I recently gave Zapatista a try. We were pleasantly surprised by how good the food and ambiance was at this restaurant. We started off with the empanadas which were very good. As an entree, I had some of the best and biggest chiles rellenos I've had in while. Make sure to try the desserts as well. We had the Pastel de Chocolate and Crepas de Cajeta. Both desserts were very, very very good. And yes, they did deserve the the three very's. Aside from the food, the lively crowd and tasty margaritas gave the restaurant a somewhat festive vibe.

Our server warned the chef was a stickler when we tried to order the mini-taco appetizer for my 4 year-old daughter's entree. He was not able to make them all chicken. I asked for other options and was pointed to the single tacos (need to purchase 3 for $12). We shared steak-fajitas (I hate to admit were better-than-average). But the fact that the chef is an inflexible stickler and won't variate from the menu to accommodate a child is ridiculous. Saiko (previous occupants) didnt necessarily promote as family friendly but the chef was always excited to bring out child-friendly creations he prepared on a wim. Not uncommon to many in my neighborhood and the entire city in fact, I have a child. We will not spend our time in an establishment who wont surrender to a small request when there are so many options out there who will.
