I've been a member in Evanston for a year or two. I go strictly for the weights (free weights and machines) and cardio machines. The quality and quantity of equipment is pretty good, but there are a few serious problems:

(1) They threw away almost all of their 2.5 lb free weights six months ago, due to a defect, and have NEVER replaced them. I have spoken to several managers at the club, and called the LA Fitness help line, but have gotten nothing except promises and excuses.

(2) The free weights area is a mess; dumbbells and free weights scattered all over the gym, and no staff member ever encourages users to put them back where they belong, in the right order. Management allows users to stack multiple 45 lb. weights on the floor under an incline sit-up board, and just leave them there. Not only is this unfair to other people who might need to use them, but several of these weights are now stuck together, and no longer useable at all. Management also allows people to use an Olympic bar for t-bar rows, by sticking it into a corner of the wall, thus damaging both the wall and the bar. This is totally unnecessary, since there are already a t-bar and and incline t-bar machines in that room.

(3) The club is running very low on safety clips for the free-weights area. These problems show me that management doesn't care enough about the safety and convenience of their customers, and I hope that they notice this comment and decide to take some action

Worst Customer Service I have ever seen. Woman who sold me the membership was new and told me that starting January 1, 2012, the garage parking is free for the first two hours. Coming from Lifetime at $80/mo membership fee, I was looking

This place is really bad- the monthly membership cost is reasonable, but the pool is always closed for health code violations and the bathrooms/locker rooms are disgusting. The trainers here are overweight and you have to pay extra for towels that are never folded. On top of that there are no extra amenities, not even a hairdryer in the locker room.

Pros: none

Cons: Dirty, unreliable, pool always closed

I joined this gym primarily for the 25 yd lap pool. Unfortunately, it has been closed for the past month (April '08) by the city health dept; this is in line with the other review posted in November. The gym has established a pattern of pool disrepair. If consistent access to a pool is a serious concern for you, don't join this gym. It is too bad that the EAC pool is 5 yds too short.

When open, the pool is kept at varying temps with incorrect chemical levels. I've been competitively swimming for 22 years, and in February / March could tell by scent that things were off. That said, it is 25 yards and the middle lanes are relatively wave-free.

The gym itself is reasonable. You get what you pay for - but make sure you review your contract before signing the dotted line. They tried to sneak an extra fee into my membership that was not discussed (e.g. they told me membership was $X / mo, they added a fee that made it $X+5 / mo).

Pros: Number of machines, floor space, location, weekday hours

Cons: Pool often closed, weekend evening hours
