I rented at 2 E 8th St primarily because of its proximity to my school (Columbia College). The building was formerly an official Columbia dorm, and it shows. Although some units have been "upgraded" with newer appliances and finishes

I had heard some horror stories about this place but I decided to give it a shot since I really had no where else to live. I have a great view but that's really the best thing I can say about this place. It's "fully furnished" with fraying furniture. The staff is EXTREMELY rude and unhelpful, they really could care less about you once you sign your lease. When we moved in the outlet in one of the bathrooms doesn't work, one of the bathroom doors doesn't close, one of the toilets runs all of the time. We told maintenance about this three times before they finally came up to our room (by the way the lady said there was basically no chance of them coming unless we gave them permission to enter when we weren't there which I don't like). The maintenance guy said that there was nothing he could do about the outlet and that my room mate should just use MY outlet in MY bathroom that I'm paying extra for. It took them a month to take the extra furniture out of my single occupancy room. Then to top it all off I was waiting for a pizza around midnight last weekend and there were over FIFTY people in the lobby arguing and one girl was crying. There was a party on the 11th floor with TWO HUNDRED PEOPLE there, security just let them in! Where is the security I'm paying for? Half the time they aren't even there. In the time I was waiting for my pizza I saw six guys sneak in behind a girl who didn't even know them after she swiped her card. But on top of all of that one of the staff members yelled at ME asking me what I was doing there. I told her and she couldn't hear me over the chaos that was going down in the lobby so I repeated myself and she warned me "not to give her attitude" excuse me but am I not paying HER salary? How is this my problem? Do you think I want 50 crazy people in the lobby where I live? NO. I had a friend over and it was embarrassing for me that she saw all of that, actually. Oh and the elevators break so much that they have signs telling you to call security incase you get stuck because they don't want to pay the 911 fee to get you out. Security can't even keep people out of my building why would I trust them? Also they take your ID if you're a guest, this isn't a dorm, why do they do that?! I hate this place.
