.

We contacted J Stewart Plumbing located at 2215 N Moody Ave .. We had what we thought was a sump pump problem and contacted them. They quoted us $350 to come do a new sump pump which sounded like a good price if we needed the pump. They came out and found out that it was just a valve problem. I was relieved because the kid on their crew told me it was $150 for the last valve they did. They put a new valve in after about 20 mins. And then presented me with the $450 bill. Of which the guy who said he was the owner told me I would have to pay at least $300 in cash or they would have to charge me $500. I was floored....but I had three guys in my house that wouldn't leave and looked like they were ready to get physical. Also since he was demanding cash I figured I wasn't dealing with people who cared too much for laws or ethics.

We almost immediately started having an issue with our ejector pump. I called a different plumber Drain-Eez...they had to replace the ejector as they said it looked like someone threw the basin seal into the pump well and it had lodged in the pump costing us another $1200. I suspected J Stewart...but there is no way to prove what they might have done. But I did ask them what a normal charge would be to replace the valve for the sump pump...they said that they charge $100 for something like that. I told them what I paid and they immediately started telling me horror stories about J Stewart. It seems the guy is a well known crook.

I called back again trying to get the owner...but the guy a J Stewart kept saying that he was John Stewart, and then when I told him who I was he would put me on hold...and come back and in a slightly modified voice would say that his name was Bill...and that he would talk with "the owner." I looked on Yelp and found out that I wasn't the first person to have problems with massive overcharging.

I have the bill for $450 and the description of the problem, which could be checked against any other plumbers normal fee.
