Let??s talk about BCU. on a friends recommendation I opened a bcu account( all you need is a pulse and a paycheck, no special affiliation with anything or anyone) and thy could not do enough for me then, offered me credit cards, mortgages, lines of credit, and personal loans. I am thinking this is great because all there rates are so good so I apply for the credit card on the spot, thinking I have a great credit score for someone who is self-employed, a great payment history and a few assets, not to mention a good amount of equity in my home. two or three weeks later I get a letter of rejection and when I call to find out why, they tell me I have too much unsecured credit and my income is too low. hmm being self-employed in the remodeling business during a time of recession can mess with your bottom line but I have a credit score in the top 10%, have paid every bill I have ever incurred and have managed to keep my business going for the last 25 years they seem to only look at one number ("current income", smells just like a big institutionalized bank to me). a few weeks after that someone calls me from there auto loan department and tells of the deals they are offering, I politely explain what happened with the credit card application and she tells me not to worry because they already have my credit report and that as long as I owe less than the loan it should not be a problem. so I make an appointment and go and spend 2 hours with this loan representative so she can tell me that me and my significant other would have to bring in 2 years?? worth of tax returns because they only seem to focus on that one number("current income" that smell of big institutionalized banking just got a little stronger).
bcu is awash with money because of everyone??s mistrust and disgust at larger banking institutions and I believe they forgot what they were established for in the first place, which was to help the people that kept deposits in there institution. my business has once again weathered the storm and my "current income" is double what it was and I have no intention of going to bcu for anything other than to deposit money in my account were the interest is a little better than there big brother( institutional bank ). so when you here there slogan " we've got your back" just know that it is either to see how big your wallet is or were to place the boot if you do not measure up
