I can't believe the bad reviews I have read about this great restaurant. Especially since two in a row are almost exact. They don't like the waitress with black hair. FABRICATED. My husband and I have been going to this restaurant since his days at NCSU in the early 80's and, in fact, I am meeting a friend for lunch today there. Best stromboli in the world! And where else in Raleigh can you get Sicilian Pizza? We have NEVER had bad service or food and their prices are reasonable. Try it, you'll love it. Moving here in the 80's from the Philadelphia area, we can definitely say that it is New York style pizza. Lovely atmosphere too. Keep up the good work Frank!

Great eggplant parmagiana which is rare for the Raleigh area! Good atmosphere and location! Kid friendly, so if you don't enjoy dining with families, make a later reservation.

I have been eating at this restaurant for years, its always been delightful. The staff has been excellent, and helpful. In the spring there is nothing better than getting a table outside, and eating a plate of pasta while watching the world go by at Cameron Village. The food is always excellent, the prices are reasonable. The tortellini is fantastic.

I went there on Monday afternoon, looking forward to a nice dinner but all we received was bad service, the food was alright but then to add insult to injury- I just looked at my bank statement and they charged me twice..once was alright but then the next charge was double which was not my bill.
I will be going to the better business bureau! If you have cash, fine. Do not let them take a credit card!! Very bad and illegal business!
Would NEVER,EVER go here again!

The sad thing about your false statements is you are not thinking about the employees who work at Piccola Italia. They go to work every day to make money to pay bills. I am sure the health inspector has shown up in the morning unannounced at least a few times over the last 28 years!! You did not quit, you got fired and it is understandable to be upset, but to go about it this way and try to defame a good establishment truly supports the reason you were fired in the first place. The food at Piccola Italia is the real thing!! Piccola Italia has lasted longer then some marriages lol. You have to be doing something right to stay in business as long as Mr. Amato has. Move on and good luck in your job search!!

There is no place better for mouth watering Pizza and great Italian.

We know exactly who's posting the fraudulent reviews in an attempt to make Piccola look bad. Don't pay any attention to this liars. Try Piccola yourself. It's the best!

Ignore the negative posts. They are being posted by a few ex-employees who were fired because they couldn't or wouldn't abide by the rules, i.e. get out of bed and go to work /go to work on time. I suggest these posts are easily traced back to the posters who have maliciously and with malice posted grossly untrue information about Piccola Italia herein. Got $25,000 to $30,000 to defend your lies in court?

I went to Piccola based largely on good word of mouth, and I ordered the "Gladiator" (all meat) pizza. The first few pieces tasted great, but I actually started to get sick after the 3rd or 4th slice. I ended up vomiting the entire meal up. I think it was because of how thick and greasy the crust was.

Still, because those first few slices tasted great, I went back a second time a few months later and ordered the same pizza, the "Gladiator." The exact same thing happened; I ate one or two slices fine, but started to get an uneasy "sick" feeling after the third slice. And I ended up vomiting again.

I too have been coming here for many years and always enjoy it. The manicotti is the best I have had. Frank the owner is always there and makes sure everything goes as it should. I would highly recommend!!

I discovered Piccola Italia in 1982 after searching high and low for REAL Pizza. A friend suggested I visit Piccola Italia and I've been hooked ever since. At least twice a week I can be found stuffing my face at my favorite booth.

Don't pay any attention to the negative posts.

They are being posted by a few former employees who were canned for failing to show up for work .

Try Piccola yourself. You won't regret it.

When my husband and I arrived at Piccola Italia, the hostess asked the waitress out front, "Will you take this one?" The waitress replied, "I guess if I have to." Looking back, we should have left then - or at least when we got to our table, where food and dirty silverware littered the floor. Our waitress came to our table three times - the last time, she asked us if we wanted dessert while we were only about halfway through dinner. Then she dropped the check on the table. Maybe she was in a hurry to get off work - I don't know. We tried to speak to a man who seemed to be a manager about the service - growing up, my dad used to say his worst customers were the ones who never came back and never said why - but he just shouted "Thank you!" at us and ran. No apology, no interest in what went wrong. This place was quite a bit different fifteen years ago - maybe it's the new generation. We won't be back.

First of all, I would like to point out the fact that the last review could not have been written by a so-called "teacher" because teachers would not use such incorrect grammar and incomplete sentences. It's crazy the things that some people will say or fabricate to try and seek revenge for a personal bad experience. Listen people, Piccola Italia is a great restaurant to eat at. I've eaten there for several years and the food is amazing. I've never had a problem with the servers or night time management. I have also worked in the food industry and witnessed many cases of people writing negative reviews on citysearch in an attempt to retaliate for not being given whatever it was that they wanted. (I.E. free food, a discount, a free dessert, etc.) Piccola is not a corporate restaurant; it is family owned and operated. Therefore, since most expenses are from out of pocket, they are not going to be so quick to give away free food such as a corporate restaurant would. No private or family owned restaurant would give away free food because they simply can't afford to do it for everyone who cried wolf. Don't read these crappy reviews for any restaurant. Most of them are written by people that just wanted their a$$ kissed way too much or wanted something for free. If you really want to find out what the food and service is like at any restaurant, especially this one, go and check it out for yourself. Don't let other people decide for you.

I am a teacher and each lesson is a lesson learned. The main thing I teach my students is being polite and to be respectful of others.
This place is fine if you want pizza, to go. The food was spared, nothing to the description and the wait staff ignoring us after he had already been rude and was talking loudly enough for people to hear in the resturant to the other wait staff about us because we asked questions was unbelievable. Finally had it and left, they came out screaming and threatening us in front of their own customers in the parking lot! Now that we finally got their attention I tried to discuss things and after being looked up and down so many times by the Manager and holared at by other wait staff, being profiled as beggers and wanting something free (yes this did come out of their mouths), when obviously we didn't want it at all at this point just wasn't even worth anything! This was completely disgraceful and untactful! The staff (Especially the manager) has all been in their narrow minded world of this place for too long they need professional training and etiquette.I am sure her father would have not been the proud owner he seems. I have been coming to Cameron Village since I was a little girl with my own mother and doing the same with my own daughter's now, which were with me in this catastrophe. I have never been treated this way in any place I have ever been.

I can not believe that some people had bad experiences at this place? I have been eating there every chance that I get since I was a college student at NCSU back in the 80??s. I eat there almost every time I return to Raleigh. Their pizza is so good that I am actually dreaming of it now. Every person that I have ever taken to eat there has returned. I have always received excellent food and great service. I would recommend the Piccola to any one with out hesitation.

I live in the neighborhood and have been eating at Piccola Italia for years. I've eaten here dozens of times and have always had a good experience.

This is the perfect place for yummy Italian comfort food--great pizza and pasta, mammoth calzones. The service is friendly and the owner is usually on hand to welcome you. This is also our go-to spot for take out pizza--forget the pizza chains.

Nice ambience indoors or you can sit outside when the weather cooperates.

Nothing better than cold lasagna, on a big, cold, plate.

What kind of management lets cold food go out of the kitchen?

I saw a lot of old patrons here. You know what that means.

I must agree with the last posting. I did see the roma pizza sauce cans on the wall so i think you nailed it on the nose that the sauce is out of a can! I recently had a terrible experience at dinner. The food was below average at best and the service was terrible. We had a black haired waitress who was in her own world. We had to lo\iterally remind her about are drinks twice...she was eating right across with from us when we still hadnt gotten are salads which came out the same time as are pizza. The salad was a mixture of brown iceburg and old mushy cucumbers! The waitress rollled her eyes when we asked about the salad and continued to eat with the manager. Anyways we asked her to speak with a manager at the end of the meal, she claimed he was busy and couldnt talk. This place is a joke and the owner needs to get a grip on his staff..........a can opener and a plate wont cut it. I suggest going to olive garden over this place.

Im not the type to ever complain about a restuarant but this was THE worst italian restaurant ive ever been to. I came into for lunch about two weeks ago....we had a black haired female server who had no idea what was going on. It was relatively slow and it still took her over five minutes to take are drink orders. The salads and food came out at literally ten seconds apart! This wasnt a big deal but are waitress was so rude and didnt say a word about everything coming out together. Anyways we were just happy the food had finally came out(45 minutes latetr). My husbands pizza was burnt along with tomato sauce that was obviously out of the can......not better than ragu pizza sauce. We asked the waitress about the pizza and she claimed that was new york style.....sorry pizza hut puts this place to shame. Anyways i had ordered a regular penne with marinara sauce. It came out angel hair with regular tomato....the waitress proceded to get angry and claimed i didnt order that. This was THE worst restuarant experience of my life! Who does the hiring? I heard the owner cookes but he obviously needs to make changes.

The atmosphere of this restaurant was nice and the service was good. I had penne with sausage and a red sauce. It was okay but was definitely something that I could make at home with little more effort than opening a can of diced tomatoes and giving them a whir with an immersion blender and cooking an Italian sausage. My husband ate there last week and left with the same impression.

Honestly, I thought this place had the worst pizza I have ever had. The service was bad, the crust was burnt, the toppings were not even melted into the pizza. Also, there was little to no sauce on my pizza. When I commented as such to my server, it was met with a look of disgust that my order was going to have to be corrected.

Never again.

I would rather eat fecal matter than ever enter this establishment again.

I came in on Thursday with my girlfriend and her father. I have about 12 years in the service industry and that makes me a bit critical sometimes, however, I was very much impressed with the waitstaff and their cooperative effort in taking care of our table. I had the linguini and clams with white sauce and was thrilled with it. Thank you very much and we look forward to coming back.

Piccola Italia still has the best pizza in town but has gone downhill over the past few years. The service is not very good or fast and the wine list is lacking. The owner Frank, is really nice and very professional but he must not be around much these days because the staff is not up to his standards. They still have the best pizza in town.

This was one of the first places I went to after moving to Raleigh about 2 yrs ago... nothing on the menu is a miss... you just can't go wrong. I felt like I should keep this place to myself but I finally took a friend of mine there last week after yrs of bragging to her that they had the BEST pizza (and Italian food) around... she totally flipped for it and now she tells everyone... I guess the secrets out lol. You guys are fantastic :)

The owner is wonderful! However, the night time management needs some improvement. My family loves the food. In recent visits, from our observations, we have come to this conclusion. They have never done anything to us and we will continue to eat there. Our service has always been great as well. I hope they never treat me the way I've seen some people being treated. My advice - work on the management before you start losing business.

Everyone should go and try it though. It is one of the better places to eat in Raleigh.

I love NY & NJ pizza and this place has the closest thing to it. I've read some of the negative reviews and I have to say that it's kinda sad what some of these people are saying. Best pizza south of the mason-dixon. Hand's down. If you're from NY or NJ, try this. All their food is good (that I've tried), though, so it's worth a few visits or call-in orders. Service is alright, and the atmosphere matches the service, but the food is absolutely worth it.

I have been going to this restaurant for 3 years now, and until the last two visits it was my favorite restaurant. After the incompetence of the waiters (2 different waiters) and managers I will NEVER go there again. There were huge spiders at our dinner table during one meal, and seems that it's the waiters number 1 job to forget to put in the food orders, not once, not twice but THREE TIMES. It was completely ridiculous that during both of the past visits we have had to ask for our salads, remind the waiters to refill our drinks and to finally bring out our appetizers (which come after you've finished the main course). This past visit was the worst because we had to wait an hour and fifteen minutes for our food and when it came out it was WRONG! When I confronted the manager all he could tell us was that " its statistically impossible to have two bad experiences at a restaurant" and that" I don't want to make up stories so I'll just apologize". Statistically speaking it won?t be a problem ever again, because they won?t have a third chance to mess up one of my meals. After everything , all we received for these very unfortunate experiences was a stale dessert that we were not even allowed to pick out and the comfort of knowing that we would not be charged for the order we refused to eat because it was wrong. I have never experienced a worse visit to a restaurant and hope no one else is subjected to the horrible service and management at this facility! Although I sadly admit the food is delectable, but no where near the trouble it takes to hassle it out of the waiters and manager. Please don't waste your time!!

Pros: the food

Cons: everything else except the food

.

The food is usually pretty good, but the management is awful! I believe its the owners son and his wife, very disrespectful and rude. My family and I were setting there eating and next think I know the son is beating up his father. My kids were scared to death. I would never recommend this place unless you want to feel like you are in a Jerry Springer epsiode.

there have been many times that i have gotten horrible service at this restaurant....and it is all involving the management.... well i shouldnt say the management because the owner is a wonderful man and is always there everytime i come in for dinner.i went in for dinner and like the first review said it was just like jerry springer.the son punching his obviously older man that is his father.a young dark haired woman was crying and screaming (this girl has been rude and short many times with me and friends that have come in separately).only making the situation worse.i will not go back until these people have had time to mature and grow as professional adults.its one thing to fight within the family but another to be violent and disrespectful to your father. I keep going back because the food is so good but i dont think that a restaurant should be rewarded for behavior like this. i have worked in many restaurants and it is stressful! but be adults and take it somewhere private. these are people who obviously dont care about their customers. i have tried to avoid posting this but it was the last straw for piccola italia

I've lived in the triangle for 11 years and going to Piccola since I arrived. The garlic pizza is to die for. They also have excellent calamari. I'll miss this place tremendously should we ever move. And, if I could figure out a way to get the recipe to that red sauce I would! Great place to eat. Family friendly, and worth the dollar.

This past weekend, my girlfriends and I visited Piccola Italia for the first time. I have to say that I was truly impressed with the food and service. I ordered a dish called the Rosaria, and it was a blend of penne pasta with scallops, shrimp, and sun dried tomatoes in a pesto/wine sauce. It was so delicious, and I'm still not over how good it was! My girlfriends ordered calzones and strombolis, and they couldn't stop raving about how fabulous they were. The bread on the calzones and strombolis was so good, and you could just tell that they had to be home made! Even the soup that came with my entree was delectable! I've never been to a restaurant where my entire party has completely enjoyed everything! Even on a weekend night, we still received excellent service. The wait wasn't bad either. For a group of six, we only had to wait about twenty minutes to be seated. The place was very inviting on the inside, and even the host and hostess made sure that we had a wonderful experience. I would definitely recommend this place to any and everyone. If you have kids, I'm sure they'll love the pizza and pasta! If you're an adult and you're looking for a nice dinner date or just a good time with friends, Piccola Italia is the right place for you. (I forgot to mention how good the chianti is!) I will definitely be returning, and I will definitely tell everyone I know about this place!

I recently visited Piccola Italia with my husband. We had been looking for a good Italian restaurant for a long time. I ordered the chicken parmagiana and it was the best I've ever had on the east coast. My husband ordered a pizza, and I have to say that it was the best pizza we have ever had in North Carolina, maybe even better than the pizza we had in New York and New Jersey! The bread served with entrees is home made, and all the sauces are home made too. The owner came to our table and he was so courteous and made sure our dining experience was a most delightful one. They have an extensive wine menu, and our server was great at recommending things to try. Our drinks stayed full, the portions were huge, and the place was romantic and cozy. The desert menu was excellent as well. All in all, we had a great dining experience at Piccola Italia. We will definately be back with our family and friends! Bon Appetit!

I went Piccola Italia last weekend with the girl I'm seeing. We were looking for Italian food in Raleigh and thought we'd try this place out. I ordered Pasta with Italian sausage. I couldn't find any sausage on my plate, just a slight pink color to my red sauce. My hunger was such that I didn't argue but I was pretty disappointed at their attempt to put sausage with penne.

It seems their idea of Italian food is throwing pasty tomato sauce on everything in sight and dropping it on a cafeteria plate for you to enjoy.

We had to ask for bread (at an Italian place?) and it tasted like they had just picked it up at the nearby Harris Teeter. No, that's not a good thing.
Out waiter was slow and barely visited our table.

If you're looking for something a few notches down from the Olive Garden on the bland-o-meter this place is for perfect. The only decent thing was that it fairly cheap for two.

This place came highly recommended, but fell way short. The waiter, whom was rarely at our table, brought out my friend's food after the rest of the party had finished eating with no explanation. After a confusing, 20 minute discussion on whether or not the late food was going to be charged to our bill, with different waiters telling us different things, we ended up paying for the boxed up food. The owner's son made several comments, including calling my friend "the rudest woman I've ever seen" and "I don't care if you ever come back." My friend has been coming here for 20 years. The waiter also had to re-split our checks, because the first ones he brought out where wrong. Very disappointing. There are much better (and cheaper) places to eat on Hillsborough and Cameron Village.

The staff members are very friendly and the service is good. In warm weather, it's quiet enough to eat at the outdoor tables, as long as you don't mind a little smoke. The pasta dishes and pizza are excellent; particularly the Amato Specialty (pasta w/ smoked ham, in a cream sauce with fresh mushrooms). The Veal Parmagiana is awesome, too. All of the pizzas are great; you pick the toppings....Prices are a little high at lunchtime but everything from the atmosphere.. to the staff....to the food...to the cleanliness of the bathrooms and the kitchen make it well worthwhile.

I absolutely adore Piccloa Italia and have been eating there almost since it opened. It has wonderful homemade Italian food that is cooked with love and attention to detail. The staff is always thoughtful and careful to take care of any special requests. I hope that the person who had one bad experience out of many good experiences will give the restaurant another chance. It sounds like the Owner looked into the matter and took appropriate action. It is a neighborhood restaurant and a family restaurant that has been in business for a long time; yet, its quality has not gone down over time like some restaurants. Having the owner on site is a big plus, as he oversees the cooking and serving of the meals. I would recommend this restaurant to all of my family and friends as the top Italian restaurant in Raleigh!

We absolutely LOVE Piccola Italia. My husband is a pizza "snob" from NJ and this is the only place that he says makes "real" pizza. To the person who had such a bad experience.... We've been going there for years and everyone there has always been so kind and courteous. so please give them another chance. They are really good folks. We especially love Ernest who has been a mainstay of the establishment for many years. He's so dedicated to the customers and the success of the restaurant that we thought for a long time that he was the owner! Who knows, maybe he'll own it someday. :)

I have been a loyal customer to Piccola Italia for over five years, I eat there every week if not on a daily basis. Today I had the worst experience and will NEVER eat there again. The manager running Piccola is rude and unprofessional. The food is fantastic, but when you have to deal with attitude and people talking down to you because "they can" it is such a turn off. I suggest a much better all around Italian restaurant such as Bella Monica.

I've been going to Piccola Italia off and on for 10 years. I've never had anything that tasted bad here. The lasagna is very good. I usually order the pizza slice special for lunch and the salad is included in the price.
The atmosphere / lighting is not as dark since it was remodeled within the past two years.

Eaten here several times over the past few years. Always have had great food on every single visit. Prices are in line with location (Cameron Village) and quality of food. Like most places, service can be lesser at times, but it's usually pretty good. The owner works his tail off to make sure you enjoy your meal. I personally liked the old appearance before the remodelled (more old style emphasizing family owned), but the new look is certainly nice. Great date locale!

red sauce covers entrees and pizza. Having grown up around Italians and Italian food, I like to think myself a bit of an expert and this is the best Italian food I've had in the 10 years I've been away from my hometown, including that food Mecca that is D.C.

Pay special attention to the Grilled Eggplant appetizer; an excellent choice of fresh eggplant topped with tomatoes, fresh basil, mozzarella and big chunks of garlic!

I wish I lived next door....

While they're a little more expensive than other joints in town, the chewy thin-crust pies at Piccola Italia are some of the best in Raleigh. Other dishes are so-so versions of Italian restaurant staples but the deceptively light eggplant parmesan is a blissful, comforting indulgence.

In Short
This is one of those comfortable Italian neighborhood joints where the owner will greet you with a cheerful "Ciao!" whether he knows you or not. The dining room is a red-hued, softly lit, casual space where diners enjoy…
