You have to SEE it to really get it- go visit Montessori School of Raleigh to see the wonder of modern Montessori education. Montessori kids learn "the basics" and much, much, much more. The "freedom in a framework" means that they work at their own pace, but teachers carefully monitor them behind the scenes, making sure each student is learning everything he/she needs to know. In addition to super-strong academics, kids benefit from a nurturing, safe, low-stress environment, strong extra-curriculars (art, music, PE during the day, and wonderful afterschool offerings as well), phenomenal teachers with extremely low turnover... I could go on all day about the benefits of MSR. It's NOT what you think- check it out- see the Elementary classroom at work, and compare it to a "traditional classroom." Judge for yourself! It has been a true gift and blessing for all 3 of my children, each of whom is very different in terms of strengths, weaknesses, and personalities. All kids deserve a Montessori education! The website will give you some insight- www.msr.org; but again, you have to spend time in a classroom to really get an idea. I love MSR!
