Terrible!! I wouldn't even give it one star, but I had to in order to write this. Baked ziti had no sauce on it. It was oily and the cheese tasted like it came out of a bag. Bread was as hard as a rock. Salad looked like it was made three days ago. Unfortunately I did take out or I would have returned it. What a waste of $10.00. Don't eat there.

First, let me say I am Italian and was raised by an Italian mother. I know what Italian food SHOULD be. This is NOT Italian food. This is inedible.

We arrived, the restaurant is old, dingy and in poor repair. We gave it a chance anyway, thinking it was a "rustic" quality.

We sat down and were served a small basket of bread. The bread was so tough, it really should have been croutons. The waitress said she would bring some bread that wasn't burned, but this was no better.

We ordered fried mozzarella sticks and these were served with the cheese ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE STICKS. Sometime during the fry process, the cheese came out and instead of fixing the problem, they served them. $6.95.

For dinner, we ordered 1.) Chicken Parmigiana 2.) Vegetable Lasagna and 2.) Baked Ziti.

The Chicken Parmigiana arrived with the chicken less than 1/4 inch thick. The chicken was hot, but was covered in extra thick, pasty sauce that was COLD. The spaghetti on the side was cold. This was not fresh cooked, it was clearly a reheat item. The chicken was so tough in the middle, it was not able to be consumed. $13.5 for food that I was able to eat less than 1/4 of the product.

The vegetable lasagna was served warm and aside from the gray, nasty egg plant they put in the middle, I guess it was okay UNTIL you got to the bottom two layers of the lasagna. The noodles on the bottom were literally like melba toast. They were touch, unable to be consumed. I was left with a plate of food that looked like vomit on toast. $13.95 and I was left with the most disgusting thing I have ever seen. It is really too bad I couldn't upload photos as I took pictures of this and the chicken. It was that bad.

The baked Ziti was interesting. It kind of leaves me at a loss for words. It was served hot which was a treat for the entire meal since most things were served cold. The Ziti was under-cooked and had a sauce that is something that escapes words and not in a good way. I just don't know how to describe it. It was mostly oil and some sort of pink substance. The flavor was absent. $9.95, a waste of money.

The salads were served okay. I have no compliments nor complaints. It was a standard bag salad mix and bottled dressing. The only reason it was decent is because they had nothing to do with the cooking process.

Then we move to the STAFF. Our waitress was unprofessional, unkept and down right sloppy. She acted like waling to our table was an inconvenience. She spent more time cackling in the kitchen with the other server than she ever did paying attention to our table.

The "chef" was a rude, abrasive b@sturd. He treats his customers and staff like dirt. We didn't send anything back for fear of what may come from this man based on the way he treated others.

FINALLY, there were the YOUNG CHILDREN running around in the kitchen. I'm not talking about pre-teens or teens, I am talking about 6 AND 7 YEAR OLD LITTLE GIRLS! These children are 1.) a health risk as they have no clue about proper sanitation and procedures in the kitchen and 2.) at a serious risk for injury by running around a commercial kitchen.

This restaurant is a joke and I am not sure how on earth he has managed to stay in business this long. We were ripped off for $60 and left to go eat dinner at McDonalds.

Never eating here again. Although the menu prices have changed, the place still sucks! The staff is an incompetent bunch and none of them care about the service. Last week we were turned away because of a "party for the owners daughter." IT WAS 8:00 pm ON A SATURDAY NIGHT and we were turned away! We had 5 people with us and went to the other Italian restaurant down the road where subway is. That place is a million times better. Never coming back to mama lenas. The owner clearly doesn't need business!!

I have lived in Waxhaw for many years. This is by far the worst thing we have in Our town, it makes you wonder why is it still open? We have given this place enough chances but the truth is the owner makes it impossible to succeed. The food got lousier by the week from the day it opened. You could tell the quality of the ingredients got worst every time we tried it. The owner is so nasty it makes it very unpleasant to go through a whole meal, we have seen so many people kicked out of there, even vendors! If you want to spend at least $20 on a lousy lunch, give it a try, good luck!

DO NOT EAT HERE!!! Food is fair to poor but the worst part of this place is the servers and owner! The owner is rude, bitter, angry, and unaccommodating even to children under the age of 5! Servers are unprofessional and poorly trained

While the food might be authentic the servers and owners definitely do not share in the Italian charm. My parents and I went to Mama Lena's after reading the reviews, looking forward to delicious Italian. We were promptly seated and served a small basket of bread. After our side salads were served our server offered to bring more bread which we happily accepted. Our food arrived and after one bite my Dad strongly disliked the lobster ravioli. The serving was very small (5 pieces to be exact) and was poorly cooked. Our server asked if everything was "delicious" and we expressed our dissatisfaction with the lobster ravioli. She apologized but nothing was done and no manager ever came over. We were still waiting for bread when our server took our plates off the table. At that time we asked to speak to a manager and were told that no manager was working that evening (Thursday night at 7:00pm). We then asked for the manager??s phone number so that we could call express our concerns. After multiple requests, our server told us that the manager/owner's wife was going to come speak to us. She arrived and promptly asked "What is your problem, I see you ate all of your food". My Dad calmly tried to explain that the food was bad and we were not given more bread till after our meal was over. She angrily kept telling us that "she was sorry" and that "it can't be that bad since we ate the food". She became increasingly agitated and finally picked up the book with our receipt (we had already paid for our meal) and stormed off yelling at us to "leave and have a good night". Mind you the entire encounter with the owner's wife was only a minute long. My only hope is that the woman who presented herself as the owner's wife was indeed not his wife. Overall this was the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. DO NOT GO TO MAMA LENA'S unless you enjoy bad service and being yelled at by the owner's wife.

I would NEVER go back to restaurant again. First of all the owner when I called the Restaurant told me it would be ok for us to use two Groupon coupons at one table (two couples) and when we got to the Restaurant he claimed he never said we could and told us we had to sit at separate tables in order to use the coupon. The owner of this Restaurant has no integrity and doesn't deserve any business at all!! The food was very dissapointing, small portions and the worst Italian I've ever had. Even the bread was bad.
Do yourself a favor and skip this place!!!

We moved down here from new york in july. We frequented many italian resturants at home. We have been to mamma lenas about four times and have had nothing but great meals. Even at home you might just hit your favorite on a bad night, but you can't bad mouth them for it. Pay your bill and go your way. Next time may be great. I would suggest a divider between the tables and the dark kitchen.......

This is a great Italian Restaurant! Good Prices and Great service in a CLEAN environment. Don't know what the previous person was talking about. There is always a few people who are just looking for something to gripe about... The Mussels in Oil and Garlic app is the best I've ever had anywhere! Lots of choices like Braciola, Osso Bucco, Lobster etc..etc.. Definately reccommend.

I think I remember the lady who made that long review. Sat in the round booth, I think - and after what they said, I don't really blame the man for tossing them out on their ears. There's just some things you don't say to a true Italian born man and saying his food isn't any good and nothing like Olive Garden, which is frozen stuff made by kids making minimum wage and have never stepped foot on Italian soil much less in an Italian kitchen? Yeah, I'd blow my top too. And honestly, he wasn't screaming. The guy a table over thought he was joking, that he knew the ladies there.

I've been a steady customer of Mamma Lena's even back when they were in Charlotte, where they have won several awards for their homemade authentic Italian cuisine. I've come in different times, seen them prepare the food by hand, and have spoken with the owner when he recognized me from frequenting his previous location. He's from Naples, which you can tell it by his accent and he jokes often about there's as many recipes for the same dish all over Italy, that all you have to do is go down a block to find a new version.

Going there, its like going to a family's house. The portions are of a good size, even during lunch and even though the walls are bare-brick and its on the small size, one can tell everything' about the quality of the food, not the way the place looks. Their prices have always been reasonable, even when the economy's tough like it is now.

Personally, if you're ever in there, I suggest the Chicken Parmigiana or Pescatore, those are my favorites off the regular menu. And if it's on the special board, get the Braciola, its a stuffed steak with pasta that makes a guy's mouth water.

Our experience began wonderfully on March 27, 2010 but ended traumatically. We started with delicious cream of mushroom soup and rustic hot bread with garlic butter. Then we (my mother and two sisters) ordered 2 eggplant parmigiana to share. When it came out, the eggplant was one huge, gray, lifeless, soggy blob with no flavor. We asked the waitress if she could change it to lasagna as we were not happy with the eggplant. I could tell by her slight hesitation that this could be a problem. However, she said she could do that. She came back and said the chef wanted to know what was wrong with the eggplant. Then she came back again and said the chef said there was nothing wrong with the eggplant and he would not exchange it for lasagna. We said that was fine, just to take the eggplant off the bill since we did not eat it. I gave her my visa to pay for our soups.

Then the chaos began. The chef came to the table and threw my credit card down and said he would not accept any payment from us. He loudly proceeded to yell and scream at us to get out of his restaurant right now. To put down our waters and get out. Then he proceeded to go over to other patrons and yell, "They say my food is no good." We tried to state to the patrons that the soup was delicious, it was only the eggplant we had a problem with. But he would not allow our voices to be heard over his belligerent ranting. I'm 47 and my mother is 76. We have never experienced anything like this in our lives. Being thrown out of a restaurant was a first for all of us. I'm sure he meant to intimidate us, but his reaction was so over the top that after leaving and getting over the shock of what happened, we were laughing at the absurdity of his behavior.

I've eaten eggplant in many different authentic Italian restaurants and this was visually the most distressing and nauseating looking eggplant I've ever seen. Not to mention how it tasted. We felt bad for the waitress who was not at fault in any way, so my sister went back in to tip her $15 since the chef would not accept the money for the meal. He went ballistic. She explained the money was not for him but for the waitress. She tucked the money under the corner of something (I think she said the hostess stand) and he took it and threw it all over the floor. She left the money on the floor and came back outside. Since lunch was free, we took in some of the lovely shops where we found everyone to be lovely and courteous. I purchased a lovely necklace at Waxhaw Art & Chocolate to help me remember this once in a lifetime (I hope) experience and my sister purchased some earrings and pottery at the Waxhaw Pottery store. Don't let this review keep you from visiting and shopping in Waxhaw, but please find somewhere - anywhere else to eat besides Mama Lena's.

This chef is totally hostile and rude. I would not recommend that you criticize his cooking in the least, you never know what he might be doing to your food back in the kitchen to get even.

Mama Lena's is still one of my favorite Italian family owned restaurants. When I lived in Charlotte I ate there at least three times a week. I have since then moved and so have they, however everytime I return to Charlotte my Best Friends know exactly where I want to go to eat.....Mama Lena's! It is so worth the 45 min. drive. The place is so cozy and friendly and the owners always make their way around to say Hello! My favorite dish is the Chicken Antonio...which is no longer on the menu, but they are always willing to make it for me when possible and my friend really enjoys the Chicken Florentine. You should give them a try! You never know you might just get addicted like me!

My husband and I started going to the Charlotte Mamma Lena's when we were dating - 14 years ago. We were so excited when they moved to Waxhaw, close to our new home. The food and service are always excellent! It's still one of our favorite places!

Apart from a lovely and perfectly attentive waitress, our experience was awful. We could see into the kitchen from our table and it was filthy. The children's portions are far too small and the food is just bland, the sort of thing you expect at a school cafeteria. It was not cheap but terrible value at any price.

Apart from a lovely and perfectly attentive waitress, our experience was awful. We could see into the kitchen from our table and it was filthy. The children's portions are far too small and the food is just bland, the sort of thing you expect at a school cafeteria. It was not cheap but terrible value at any price.

.

Mama Lena's is small italian restaurant, that serves authentic italian food and the prices are great especially since you get a large amount of food. The staff are very friendly. Mama Lena's are opened for lunch and dinner. Also if you get a chance try there desserts - wow!!!!
