Amaka's International Spa is outstanding. The service is very professional and great. I have had numerous styles by the owner and other Amaka's style team. The silk press leaves your hair light and airy. The sew-ins are worth every penny. The protective styles for natural hair last. I would recommend this salon hands-down. The atmosphere is very soothing and relaxing.

They seem nice and try to be professional, but overly confident and I'm not impressed. Hair looked okay, but had to rewash it because ends were brittle after shampoo & style. Called owner to express my disappointment and she told me that I would have to pay again, but will give me a discount..wtf?? I argued that I could do my own hair free, with better results. Then she informed me that the original tech (Brittney) would have to do my hair. She gave me excuses as to why my hair was brittle, and I have been doing my hair forever and it never was it brittle on the ends after a fresh relaxer, and yes I used a treatment. Said she would have receptionist call me back to set up a time for her to redo my hair. Like I said, it wasn't horrible looking she actually did it real cute, but after wrapping it i noticed how dry the ends were. Don't care about getting my hair redone, I'll just take this as a lost and go some where else. Do not recommend this place. PS. Haven't received phone call from them to set up another appt for my hair to get done. That's okay, I know better and don't want to feel uncomfortable-- I have a slight temper.

Worst natural hair experience EVER!!!

Stylist name: Ariel or Aurielle.

She arrived 15 minutes late and didn't apologize. Didn't section my 4c hair during shampoo/condition/blowout process. At home, I section in twist to make my washing process easier. She left me at the dryer for 20+ minutes after the machine cut off to do another client (didn't acknowledge or apologize then). Only added a couple spritz of heat serum and did NOT detangle my hair before the blowout (for naturals that's a NO! NO!). 5 minutes into the blowout I voiced my concerns, and must've upset her because she left for at least 15 minutes without telling me, and came back talking on the cell phone. I asked for a salon manager. One never showed up. Once the stylist returned I told her I no longer needed her services, and clearly there were too many distractions for her to complete my hair. So I left the salon with my hair unfinished.

NOT THE WORST PART!!! The kickeranother stylist scolded a lil girl (during a shampoo) for not informing her that she was suppose to receive a relaxer (the mother or receptionists job, not the child). It was too late b/c her hair was already wet. The little girl seemed shy, scared, non talkative but clearly it wasnt her fault. My stylist told the other stylist doing the childs hair that it would be fine placing a relaxer on for a short time on the wet hair. O_o Im not sure whose child was being serviced there on 8/22/12, but I hope her hair turned out okay. I will not return to this salon.

Don't waste your money. This salon is "tricking" clients to come there and patronize them through Groupon deals and then when you get in they try to "upsell" you on what you really need. Who the heck "upsells" on getting your hair STYLED for an extra charge? Would you go to the hairdresser and NOT get your hair styled as part of the service. Poor a$$ service, and false advertisement. There are MUCH better salons in the area that cost far less, patronize Amaka at your own risk.

This Salon is very innovative! They have a very relaxing motif. The staff is very friendly and efficient. In dealing with natural hair, it takes time and patience to give us clients the ultimate experience and outcome. I've been coming to this salon for years and the owner is very knowledgeable of natural and healthy hair. She makes sure her staff is very knowledgeable as well. Not all clients will be please as at times I've witnessed some who come in already having a bad day and would take their frustrations out on everyone, i've also witnessed clients who choose styles that aren't realistic for their length or hair type. Amaka's Stylist and staff work hard to please everyone who walks in the door. A year ago the owner had a vision of making the salon name a reality "international "...she wanted to be able to service all clients no matter the ethnicity. Companies such as GROUPON and Living Social have helped her to do so. Those were some of her toughest clients, some loved their experience and others complained about small things. The one thing I love about the owner is that she reads reviews and listens to client complaints and tries her best to fix it. I always have to remember myself that not all experiences from one time clients speak for the entire salon and it's mission. Being a minority, a woman, and a small business owner and managing over 6 employees is awesome for someone is a wife and mother of two. This Salon has been striving for over 6years and will continue to be there to service their clients and myself. Experience them for yourself;) I did!

I bought a Groupon I couldn't get an appt for. I called and called.People were rude on the phone. Got my money back from Groupon and three months after Groupon expired Amaka's finally called me to 'fit me in'. Like what the heck? I would never recommend this place.

They have a silk condition that leaves your hair looking great. It cost more but is worth it.

Had a manicure here too and it was really good. Will go again.

I have been serviced by this establishment 3 times and 2 out of the 3 times I have left dissatisfied. During my initial visit I got my hair trimmed, washed, and styled. The style was not what I had requested, but I thought that perhaps my instructions were not clear to the stylist.
The second time, upon arriving for my appointment, I was greeted by a technician who informed me that my stylist was going to be late and I was to be serviced by another stylist. While the resulting hair style did not look awful, it did not look like I had just gotten it done.
On my third visit the stylist arrived 30 minutes late. She washed my hair, put me under the dryer for a deep conditioning, while she proceeded to start on another client's hair. After 15 minutes under the dryer, I returned to my stylist to let her know that I was finished. She asked me to take a seat while she worked on another client's hair. While waiting I noticed that the stylist walked out of the shop at least 4 times to talk on her cell phone. She also spent a significant amount of time talking to other stylist in the shop while I and other clients were waiting. After about 45 minutes, my stylist informed me that she was ready to finish my hair. I had previously shown the stylist a picture of me depicting the way in which I desired my hair to be cut. After she dryed and flat ironed my hair the stylist stated that she was "just going to style my hair slightly different." Four hours later I left the shop highly dissappointed, with what looked like a bowl cut, in search of a new stylist.
While the stylist at this establishment are friendly, they are less than professional. They appear to be somewhat competant in styling clients with long or natural hair, but lack cutting and styling skills. This salon also lacks good customer service. I have tried on several occassions to call and schedule an appointment only to be forwarded to voice mail. I have left voice mail messaages, with no response. Needless to say I will not be returning to this salon nor would I reccommend it to others.

I had a pedicure and leg massage from Natasha and it was terrific. I'll definitely go back for another. She has her own private room with soothing music that prevented us from having to listen to what's going on in the rest of the salon.

I was referred to Amaka's by two friends of my friends who get their hair done there. I was not impressed with the salon at all. My stylist Takeyla was late (did not apologize for being late) did not talk to me about my hair at all (actually she didn't say more than was necessary to me like we were enemies or something). Instead of talking to me she gossiped with her fellow stylists during my entire appointment. She almost forgot to base my scalp before putting the relaxer on. She didn't leave the neutralizing shampoo in like you're supposed to and she didn't leave the conditioner in my hair for more than 5 minutes (i'm used to 15-30 minutes deep conditioning). I got a rollerset and she styled my hair horribly, she left the curls in there, pushed my hair back and gelled my edges (I HATE gel), I looked like a 75 year old lady.

Pros: nice spa-like music, fairly nice decor, good price for relaxer ($65), uses Design Essentials (good professional relaxer), stylist was gentle with my hair and had good relaxer timing
Cons: unprofessional, seemingly fairly little knowledge of healthy hair care or styling

Bottom Line:
Will you leave will a head of messed up hair? No. But will you leave feeling satisfied with the experience? No.
Will I return?
even though I don't think I can beat the deal of that relaxer I would prefer to pay more to get more quality out of my salon experience. So I will not be returning.
