Amy rocks the hizz-ouse

by CSMobileUser5

I would trust any of the stylists to make my hair beautiful. Amy, however, makes my hair stop traffic. I refer EVERYONE to Shine Salon to get their hair taken care of!

Shine really is the BEST!

by hard to please

My husband found Shine salon for me on the "Best of the Best" list and boy do they deserve their place at the top! I have been a client for a few months now and have never been happier. It's almost like Amy reads my mind with the color and the cut is always awesome! She is on par with the top celebrity stylists in Manhattan and I'm glad I found her and her team. I recommend Shine to my most discerning friends with confidence.

Great Outcome

by StephM

I found Shine online and they booked me with Mark. I felt he did a great job listening to my "color problem"- having dark hair and a lot of gray. My mom said it's the best most natural my hair color has looked in years and to not go anywhere else again. Plus I liked that that they are willing to charge just for a root touch up instead of an all over color-- which I haven't found anywhere else around town and they have great prices if you just want a few "fashion foils" ... I have already referred two friends after just one visit and feel they know what they are doing. They have great color choices and my hair felt soft and not dry after the coloring. Thumbs up!

Pros: Good listener, discount on haircut w/color, good prices

Jill is your girl.

by adubstl

If my junior high self would have had someone like Jill to cut my hair, I would have never wasted tears in a bad salon over a horrible haircut.

I have been going to Jill for almost 2 years and never once left unhappy. Walk in, sit down, let her play with your hair, and you're good to go.

Seriously, if I move out of town, I hope Jill moves with me.

Pros: easy going, painless, talented

Jill Dyer is amazing

by SabrinaMarie422

I have probably gone to every salon in the Charlotte and lake norman area. Been through countless people who seem to only know a few ways to style everybodies hair. Not Shine Salon! I have been going there monthly since December and I look better and better everytime! Jill does an amazing job turning my hair into a work of art! My advice, let them do what they want. It will look beautiful and your hair will do things you never thought possible!

Pros: reasonably priced

Cons: none

Amy is THE BEST!

by Aliemac1

I highly recommend Amy for haircuts that require precision. I have thin, fine hair cut in an angled bob. Unfortunately, as my hair grows, it tends to 'mushroom' at the bottom. The first time Amy cut my hair, she recognized this and fixed the problem. Not only does my haircut look fantistic, but Amy's great cut significantly shortened my drying time. Thank you, Amy!!!

Pros: Reasonable prices, extended hours, friendly staff

The best hair salon I have ever been to.

by leeannasomething

This was the best experience at a salon I have ever had. They are extremely friendly and listen to exactly what you say. I have blonde hair, so it is very dry and breaks easily. They were extremely gentle with my hair. They also have a glaze that they put on your hair and it made my hair a lot more shiny and manageable. They have a price range for everyone, I recommend this salon to anyone.

Pros: knowledgeable, helpful, good prices, welcoming atmosphere

Best Haircut in Two Years

by greenteaginger

Shine is quite simply amazing. The whole staff is friendly and welcoming without being overbearing. They're also cool and funky without being pretentious. Mark did my hair. He was helpful, direct, and had great ideas that worked with my own vision. He made sure he knew what hair cut would suit my face type and my personality. The cut is unreal. It's better than what I wanted. And the color is even better. I've found my stylist and salon.

Pros: Great price, service, staff, MARK!

Cons: none.

High quality customer service

by engteacher1979

Shine is a wonderful little salon in Plaza Midwood and is reasonably priced for the quality of services (around $45 for a wash, haircut and style). The stylists frequently receive professional development and work hard to provide a comfortable atmosphere for the client. The cut and style I received from Christine was excellent and got lots of compliments! I've been a customer for over a year and will continue to go back even though I've moved across town.

Pros: quality of service

Cons: small parking lot

Great Salon with Friendly Atmosphere

by cew83

Prior to going to Shine, I got my hair cut at a number of small, non-appointment hair salon chains. About a year ago I randomly called Shine and asked for an appointment because of its close proximity to my house and good feedback I heard from others. I got an appointment with Mark Gordon and I've been going there to see Mark every 2 weeks since then. Mark is very friendly and does a great job of styling my hair. The staff at the salon makes you feel like you are part of their family - part of the reason why I keep going back. The services and products offered by Shine are a good value for their price. Undoubtedly, I would recommend Mark at Shine to anyone who is looking for a great salon to go to on a regular basis.

Pros: Coffee, Soda, and Wine offered to customesr, friendly staff, great location in the heart of Plaza Midwood

Best Salon in Charlotte!

by Amont

I've been a Shine customer for two years and I have always had a great experience. The atmosphere is fun and the staff is always friendly and inviting. Jill specifically is the stylist that has transformed my look from ho-hum to HOT! She's up on the cutting edge styles and always personalizes my haircuts. Overall, I love the salon and the entire staff but *pause for cheesiness* Jill really makes the place Shine!

Shine Hair Salon - A Staff and an Experience that really SHINES!

by jchilders1

I started going to Shine in 2006. My hair was a mess - thick, dry, curly, just plain ugly! Amy made miracles happen - she took time to really give me a great cut and started making my hair healthy. What was once my frustration has now become my pride. I am constantly getting compliments on my hair! I have sinced moved from Charlotte to Hickory, but I love the people at Shine so much and I love the quality of their work that I make it a point to travel back for my hair cuts. Amy, Jill and all the Shine Staff - You are Awesome!

SHINE SALON THE BEST EVER!!!!!!! CHARLOTTE NC

by jlandon

Ok so first of all the absolute best salon I have ever been to!!! I have been going to Shine for almost 3 months and i absolutely love it. I always go to Christina i don't know how i got so lucky but the first time i called in i got the first available and it happened to be Christina i do not know how i lucked out. I went to my other salon for 11 years while i lived in my hometown and i thought i could never transition but i did and i am glad i did the first appointment i had at Shine was filled with nice people and and great atmosphere when i met Christina she had this huge smile i could never forget...She was great and at that point my hair was really long and had been forever she was the first person i trusted to just chop it all off and that was the first time i had ever met her but she puts off a vibe of trust and it is undeniable i go in she sits me down and i tell her i want something different and i walk out with everyone asking me about my hair and by the way you wanna talk about amazing color well she can do it....I love it there not just her i know im kinda all about Christina but she is the one that can turn my frown upside down when it comes to me being tired of a hairstyle or color....But everyone at Shine is great they are all really nice friendly and just damn good at what they do, not only at the hair part but how they make you feel is awesome!!!!!

(OH YEAH I FORGOT SHE GIVES AMAZING HEAD MASSAGES I LITERALLY GET CHILLS)

Pros: GREAT SERVICE, SKILL, AND ATMOSPHERE WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR

Great Salon

by Maddie3

I have gone to Christina a few times and everytime I love what she does! She knew just what I wanted when I explained it to her and my highlights turned out great along with my haircut and style. I have been to many salons and I don't plan on going to anyone but her from now on. She is amazing with color! Christina is not only a great stylist, she is very warm and friendly and pretty much willing to help you with whatever you need. I went to get a cut and color from her the day of my engagement pictures and she took the time to curly my hair and style my hair so my pictures would come out pefect. I didn't even ask her to do it and she did not charge me for it either. Just a very down to earth girl with lots of talent!! My pictures turned out great and I can't thank her enough!!!

Great Salon!

by ETroutman

I had a great experience at Shine...my appointment was with Mark and he was so warm and friendly! He did a GREAT job giving me beautiful new highlights and lowlights and a really chic new haircut! I was also very impressed at my almost painless brow and lip waxing. I really enjoyed the atmosphere at Shine--upbeat music and modern decor, upscale but not intimidating, and all the stylists seem so friendly and fun! I will be looking forward to my next appointment!

Pros: Friendly, professional staff, great atmosphere, high quality service

Great Customer Service, Great Cut

by mkanabl

I have very curly hair and have had a great deal of bad haircuts in my day! I have been to Tina twice now, and she has done a great job on my hair. She listens to exactly what I want, offers suggestions if needed and I look wonderful when I leave! The atmosphere is great at Shine, everyone is so nice. They make you feel right at home! Because I generally just get my hair trimmed, it can be a little pricey, so I have been just going to The Aveda Institute in between visits to Tina, but when I need an overhaul, Tina has been wonderful. I would highly recommend Shine.

Pros: Great Environment, Knowledgable Staff

Cons: Pricey for Basic Haircut

SHINE DOES REALLY SHINE

by Vino13

Amy rocks - she took 10 years off my look and for the better! I still receive compliments months after she gave me my first cut. I was a loyal Aveda client for years. I am glad I made the switch to SHINE. Keep up the good work!

The salon is very inviting and relaxing. Everyone is personable. It's a rockin environment!

Pros: Great music, welcoming atmosphere, fun staff. They make every effort to get you an appointment that works with your schedule.

Cons: parking can be limited

Want that "just had my hair done" look everyday?

by kendyl

Amy Swaney of Shine Salon can turn that dream into a reality. Whether you are suffering from the wrong cut, poor hair condition or just not the right color, Amy can morph that mane into a sure "head turner". And that is only the beginning. With her vast expertise, she will educate you on how to have that look every day from Blowdry 101 to the right combination of products for optimum hair health. The proof will be in the compliments. From the first appointment over two years ago, there hasn't been a week go by that someone (usally a total stranger) approaches me just to say "I love your hair". Thank you Amy!!!

Trust Shine to take years off your looks, accentuate your best features

by kellygraymatter

I was a bleach blonde for 30 years. It was part of who I was. The hair, smokin' bod, hot wardrobe... it was all part of an identity which had evolved over the years. When I was 25, on a soap opera in NYC and an ultra-thin beach babe, it worked for me. But now in my mid-30s, the look that had carried me so far was aging me beyond my years. In addition, the men who typically asked me out were players looking for blonde bombshells. I needed a major makeover. One evening over a bottle of wine with a close friend we bought a box of hair color and voila! Disaster. I had met James, manager of Shine Salon at my favorite hangout "Petra's" in Plaza Midwood. Everyone who worked with him always looked great, and I knew if anyone could fix my self-inflicted hair fiasco, the folks at Shine could. Amy went to work, and not only fixed the awful color I had created, but birthed a fabulous new hair color just for me. I went from washed out and aged to a fabulous combination of dark brown with subtle red tones. Blondes turn heads, that's for sure. And I was worried about not being able to carry off such a dramatic change. But thanks to Amy and James, I'm still turning heads but now for the right reasons -- my friends say the new style has shaved six years off my appearance, accentuates my best features and my confidence has skyrocketed. An added bonus... about two weeks after Amy did my hair, I met a wonderful man and we've been dating for six weeks. When I told him I had been blonde all my life, he said he could never imagine me any other way than as a brunette! I am so grateful to Amy and James and am pleased to endorse this caring, enthusiastic salon as one of the best I've ever visited. KG, Charlotte, NC

Pros: Educate you on proper hair care, great job, GREAT attitudes

Cons: They can't come home with you to style it every day

Blonde to Red and Never Better!

by andi1967

I saw an ad for Shine at my gym and gave it a shot because they were "color specialists" and I was looking to change from "mousy kinda bleach blond with gray" to red. I met Jill back in September and my new color turned out better than I could have hoped. Ever since "the big change" I have gotten nothing but compliments from those who knew me as a blonde and a constant stream of "you are so lucky to have naturally red hair" from strangers (hey, what they don't know won't hurt them...). As mentioned in several other reviews everyone on the staff is so friendly - they work as a team and it shows. The salon has a great funky vibe without being over-the-top and you can tell these women know their way around a head of hair. I'm getting ready for my 4th visit and I haven't been disappointed yet - and on top of all of that their prices are extremely competitive.

Pros: great with dramatic color changes; The Penguin is walking distance :)

Cons: parking is a little cramped but that's just a sign of steady clientele

Best Experience Ever

by lvgarner

Going to Shine Salon was like a breath of fresh air. The atmosphere upon entering the salon is professional and courteous. The salon manager, James, is extremely welcoming, taking your coat, asking who you are coming to see, what kind of appt you have, down to if you are in need of a beverage. Then you are whisk away to the back area where all the stylist are.
The stylist, Jill, Tina and owner Amy, are AMAZING. They work in such a tight group constantly interacting with one another and giving feedback and ideas with each other and clients in the chair. The salon is so welcoming and vibrant. You will want to stay and enjoy the lively banter all day. But mostly I felt very confident sitting in the chair and letting them work on my hair. After all I wear my hair everyday and I want it to look good.
The color and cut job I received was mind-blowing. They truly take their time to interact with the customers, and find out what their needs are, and how they can best service them. Everywhere I go people ask me where I get my hair done, or tell me how pretty it is, and I am super excited to tell them it was Shine Salon. It is a great place to go!

Pros: Friend, Professional, Extremely Knowledgable

Cons: parking

Horrible Hair Experience!

by alberssl

I'm new to Charlotte and went to Shine because of the great reviews on citysearch. Tina was my stylist. She was very nice but really ruined my hair. I told her I normally had my roots touched up and high and low lites done. First off she turned my hair orange. Then in trying to fix it left bands of orange in my hair and spots of orange in the back along with bleach blonde hair in the other locations. She sent me off saying it looked good and that I might only need low lites in a few days. She charged me $205.00 which included the first color processing and the second one she had to do in attempts to fix the first problem (this did include an okay but too short haircut...due to the damage from two color processings). The next day my scalp was red and my hair looked horrible, I called the manager Amy and she refunded my money and said she would fix it for free but I really didn't have any more trust in this establishment since they let me leave when it looked that terrible and said that I might only need low lites. In reality I had to have my hair redone and it is a dark brown with some low-lites instead of being blonde. I've cried for like two days since I hate the color and have tons of holiday parties to go to. I have never been so upset over hair in my whole life. I have never been this mad at a business. DO NOT GO TO SHINE!

Great Hair w/ Great Friends

by stix1975

If you're looking for a salon that instinctively knows what styles are best for you, Shine's your place. I've been seeing Amy for years and she and the girls always take my experience to the next level. They're true professionals that offer me an upbeat environment. Like today; I wasn't sure what I wanted or needed done. I walked away w/ a great new cut and color that I love. And most important, my boyfriend loves it! I trust them completely to know what works best for my curly and "unruly" hair. These are good people that do a great job! I highly recommend.

Pros: Quality, Continued Training, Fun Staff

It's been nice to have somewhere that I can go and not have to explain what I need done every time. This a great little salon that takes good care of me. Thanks ladies!

Best known secret!

by nsmith77

I have been going to see Amy for what I think is 4 years. The first time I met her I knew she was the stylist for me. Not only does she have amazing talent but she has the amazing ability to make you feel like you are the only one in the room. When she opened the salon I knew she was on her way to do great things. To see her passion to not only help her staff grow but to see her passion in wanting her clients to grow as well is just unbelievable! The salon's BlowDry 101 class I have heard is just remarkable. I of course have short hair and have never picked up a hairdryer is besides the point. Check her and the girls out. They live on the edge when it comes to knowing the trends and styles but would never take you unless you wanted too. I have been so happy that now my entire family goes (mom, dad and my two sisters). Ever person that I have referred to Amy, Tina or Jill have thanked me and have never turned back. Like I said it is the best known secret because we all know they are the best but many are afraid to speak it because they might upset their current stylist. High end salon with out that darn nose in the air!!!!

Pros: Friendly staff, great cut/color, no Kerri (nice girl but a little to loud), amazing people (clients included)

Cons: Amy is popular its hard to get an appointment

Exceeded my expectations

by dserb

Moving from NYC to Charlotte, I was definately concerned about finding a true colorist. I am 100% grey, but would never admit that in person, and you would never know it. For someone like me its crucial to see someone who really gets color. Kerri exceeded my expectations. She was extremely educatated and knows her craft well. Thank you for letting me know where she is. The salon wouldn't tell me. I highly recommend her.

Pros: great color

Cons: location, size, crowded

Kerri was great...made me comfortable with change

by jyen2

I am 24 and had never had my hair colored before....I still can't belive how different I looked after the girls in the salon talked me into color. (I was suppose to just get a trim) I seriosly, felt pretty for the first time in my life...everything looked different, and I still get compliments (even though my roots need to be done again,). Kerri made me feel very comfortable about color and I was very scared. Even though I don't like roots, I'll take them compared to feeling blah all the time. I guess my hair is what people called mousy....now it's just sunny and pretty and looks natural. It took a few days to get used to, buit it's a big difference. I am much happier and my eyes even look bluer. I just feel brighter. I guess getting my roots done every 3 months i's worth the maintenence. This is still pretty new to me. But I am glad I did it.

Pros: Made me comfortable

Cons: very busy and crowded

I'll miss Shine, but gotta follow my girl Kerri

by knate2

I have been going to Shine for two years, cute salon, and Kerri Rocked my hair, so when I called to make an appointment and heard she was no longer there, I was devastated. Luckily, I found her. Kerri opened her own shop...so if your looking for her like I was, shes at All In Good Company, not too far from Shine, but closer to dilworth......www. allingoodcompany. com. New salon is very Soho Loft like. Very cool.
Kerri is by far the best colorist, and the most fun stylist in Charlotte , and she knows how to cut some hair.
Just thought I'd share with other Kerri fans. So glad I found her.

Pros: Shines Great

Cons: Kerri Left

Get great hair that people NOTICE, and have fun getting it!

by gracechild

I have had my hair done in many places but this is truly the best. I get a pro consultation, a fabulous color, a great cut that fits me, fits my style. I get compliments on my hair weekly. REALLY. On my color, cut, style. From perfect strangers. The environment is friendly, casual, upbeat, very fun. You can tell they enjoy what they are doing and they enjoy working together. One of the best things about it is the owner is so knowledgeable about products and techniques. There's frequent interaction between the stylists as they discuss technique and recommendations for clients. It's like group therapy for your hair!! You can tell they are all very passionate about giving their clients the very best.
Another cool thing they do is BlowDry 101. Once a month they do this class on a Friday night. Wine, cheese, and teaching you how to style your hair. Awesome. I learned why I couldn't make my hair look that good at home, and now I can. There was a story about Shine and Blowdry 101 in the Charlotte Observer several months ago.
Call them. Go there. Get great hair. They are REALLY that good.

Pros: Knowledgeable, talented stylists. Convenient location.

Cons: seats in the reception area could be more comfortable.

Thank God I found them

by snicols

I had just moved from NYC where I was a client at Fredrick Fekkai for 7 years. Moving had me in tears because I loved my stylist and people consistently stopped me on the streets to ask who did my color. When looking for a salon in Charlotte, everyone I asked recommended Modern salon, or Carmen and Carmen. Well, after having my hair whacked off and grossly layered at Carmen, I went to Modern to have it "fixed" and colored...The haircut was ok, not great, the stylist was a mute and didn't talk to me, and my color went from being the most beautiful honey blonde to ashy and I could literally see the color deposit on my hair.
I was about to fly back home when I finally saw the best haircut and color on a lady at SouthPark, and she told me that Shine salon was the absolute best salon around and she had had similar experiences at the others....I was very skepticle. Very scared. But my hair is absolutely beautiful and my haircut, although shorter than I wanted, is adorable and precisely cut. The salon is cute, more of a boutique, but it's warm, charming, and they know what they are doing.

Pros: they are educated, fun place, they listen and ask questions

Cons: had a hard time finding it, but I am new to the area

The staff was incredibly knowledgable on all the latest trends and didn't hesitate to tell me what would work best for me. They made me feel super comfortable and I just fell in love with the way they got along with their clients. I will most definately back!! Plus... my hair rocks!!
