People come on now.. The Times is not known for the burgers and saying "used to be awesome before it got known" is well just showing your inner hipster. The Times is a classic Raleigh spot. It's right in the heart of the true downtown

I had read that Raleigh Times had the best burgers in downtown. Went there to pick up a business lunch order that we called in. We were told it would be ready in 30 minutes. We get there and the bartender says our order is not ready.

Raleigh Times Bar (RTB) impressionably is the center of the universe, if that universe is downtown Raleigh. I came to this conclusion during Hopscotch Music Festival when RTB hosted its own unaffiliated, day-long block party and it resembled the festival itself. I??ve eaten many meals, as well as, kick-started or ended many late nights here.
Overall, it??s a really cool bar with a wide selection of beverages (beer/cocktail) and decent food.
I find it amusing there is a column on the menu entitled ??Bar Food??I feel all RTB entrees qualify as bar food.

Food Specifics:
The Grilled Cheddar, Avocado, & Tomato sandwich is crazy good, when toasted thoroughly (50/50 success). The Raleigh Times Burger is an award winning burger ?? my lunch mate verbally confirmed ??this is the best burger I??ve ever eaten??mid-bite. Pork Nachos/Loaded Fries are a late night favorite amongst the friends. The pork was once provided by the Pit ?? I??ve noticed this info is no longer highlighted on the menu? mystery BBQ? Prime-Rib French Dip doesn??t disappoint. Be sure to try the tasty house cut chips with their garlic ranch.
The Crunchy Chicken Tacos are not good, according to one truly dissatisfied tex-mex fanatical lunch-mate. The Fish & Chips basket is a sad attempt at a Brit classic ?? good beer battering, but too greasy & perhaps frozen?

I??ve shared Sangria carafes and RTB has a delicious recipe. They also take great pride in their extensive beer collection, and keep fans up-to-date via Facebook regarding arriving & departing beers.

Overall, RTB is more of a good time than a good restaurant? but that isn??t necessarily a bad thing.

I love going to Raleigh Times. Their beer selection, though somewhat pricey, is really creative. They offer some of the most unique and interesting brews. The food here is also excellent. I am really sad that they took the Pit bbq sandwich off the menu, though.

I enjoy the Raleigh Times because it is one of the few "hot" spots downtown that hasn't starting asking patrons to chop off an arm in exchange for a beer and a burger. With $3-$5 adult beverage options and $8-$14 meal options I eat here every time I visit downtown.
I like that they allow you to taste a beer before ordering and the bartenders always recommend beer based on what you like/don't like after sampling. Also, bonus points for ALWAYS having a clean restroom!

We've been to the Times twice in the last few months and can't wait for each return. Service is friendly, the burgers are perfection, the Belgian beer selection is mind-boggling. This is a great place to bring out-of-towners for a great pub experience, A+, we need more places like it!

This bar is still great, but it's packed on Friday and Saturday nights with hipsters and fancy dressing young professionals. What happened to the t-shirt and jeans crowd? Nevertheless, you can't beat the BBQ nachos and the $6 pitcher and $2 pint PBRs. Good place to try for lunch, weekdays or after midnight on Friday and Saturday.

My husband and I used to frequent this restaurant once a week and sit outside with our dog. We liked it so much we had the rehearsal dinner for our wedding here a couple of years ago. We like the food and although the service has always been slow, slow, slow the staff used to be friendly. Now when we go inside we cannot hear each other over the loud, loud music. The space does not have good acoustics so the music bounces all around making everyone shout to be heard. We have asked for the music to be turned down a bit but it never makes a difference. We have stopped going as often and I do miss it. I just wish they management would realize that not all patrons enjoy the loud atmosphere and would enjoy actually being able to sit and have a conversation over dinner without shouting. I would like to recommend the chicken salad wrap with chips, the chicken fried chicken and the shrimp burger.

update: They have changed their menu and removed the chicken salad. How disappointing

I moved here from Michigan about five years ago and this bar still remains my favorite. Within these five years, I have yet to receive a bland or common meal. The changing menu is unique which leaves desire; consequently, returning business is inevitable. Furthermore, the beer selection is something amazing in itself.
It is understandable why some types of people would not like this bar, but diversity is yet another reason why I love it. Yes, some people may look different, but it's all in how one carries one's self; be cool, get cool.

This place is only friendly for "artsy" (emo) types with too much money and not enough taste. The waitress was rude--I guess we didn't have enough tattoos and piercings to occupy her time. I had a pretty good salad--made bad because of the price. The bartender with the black mullet was downright rude.

Raleigh Times is one of my favorite places to eat. I go there alot for lunch and absolutely love the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. The fries are awesome, but you have to get them a la carte, which is silly to me. And they serve ketchup on the side. What's so wrong with leaving the bottle on the table? Anyway, go there, you'll enjoy it for sure.

Since the hamburger is ground fresh in house, you can choose the degree of doneness that you want. You do not have to take the standard well done like most places.

The mixed drinks at the Raleigh Times are unique and delicious. It's rare these days to find a "new" mixed drink, but they offer several drinks that I have never seen elsewhere. It gets crowded on the weekends, but you still get great service.

I've never been to a worse place in my life. The bar stinks and the bartenders are complete jerks. I had two male bartenders that evening - both of them were cocky and rude, and had the worst attitude I've ever seen.

Seriously...Greg, you're killing me with the talent in that place. (No offense to Katrina or any of the other wonderful ladies walking around that I can never have.) Even the dudes are cool as hell and willing to tell you anything about the latest effort from Thom Yorke. (Which is probably crucifying some hipster patron's eardrums right now...)
Yea, the food is really good. whatever, I'll write that later. The girls are hot. -Whitey

This is hands down the best burger to be found in the area. They grind their own meat on site, so they are able to serve a medium rare hamburger. The food is always excellent. The atmosphere is hip and fun. The location is adorable.

Love the BBQ nachos, Lot's o beer choices, a historic location, and the best Rueben in Raleigh. Excellent pimento cheese sandwiches! Perfect mix of hip and casual. Cheap beer and expensive beer. Drinking establishment and dining establishment. I can take my boss and I can take my hippest of friends.

We have a question. And, apparently, we are not the only ones wondering this. What happened to that smokin' hot bartendress??? She always worked on the non smoking side and we rarely went over to that side of the bar but when we did, she always made it a point to help us with the crazy beer list and introduce us to stuff we never would of tried. The bar is still great, I love the Times, but she always had a way of making of her rounds and making us feel awesome about being there. The pork nachos are amazing and the beer selection is off the chain! We will definetly be back but would love to know where that adorable bartender went!

This is my first time ever reviewing on citysearch -- and I'm only doing it because no one at Raleigh Times made eye contact with me after I got up from our table and stood at the bar to wait and wait and wait to explain in person why my friends and I were going elsewhere. So: I have worked in several restaurants over the years and I was a huge fan of RT when Ashley and her staff were still there. In the last year or so, I have been repeatedly disappointed in the food quality, atmosphere and staff professionalism. First, the food: buns are consistently stale, and the sides -- what is up? They are terrible! It's almost like a joke, that pasta salad is so bad! As for the atmosphere, I have to say that someone did finally straighten the slanting framed newspapers in the second room. Good work. But why does the music have to be so loud at dinner time? And for the staff: I was there Saturday night, and our waitress was totally sassy and really subtracted from the experience. I don't need much, folks, just a professional attitude. I went again on Sunday evening -- my boyfriend and I brought a friend visiting from out of town -- and we waited at the table in the window by the bar for about 15 minutes. It was not busy. A server said something unintelligible to us in passing, but she never came back. We got tired of waiting (and we were embarrassed to bring our guest there), so I thought I'd politely explain that we were leaving because we had been ignored. The bartender never acknowledged my presence. Ya'll, it's just not going well from a serving standpoint and the place did NOT start out this way. It's really a shame and I hope you get your act together because Raleigh Times used to be so awesome. Bartenders, acknowledge the people standing at your bar. You'll make money. Servers, act like you give a damn. People in the kitchen, reality check those sides because they are bad. I'm not mad, I'm really disappointed and would love to see improvement.

The first time I went to Raleigh Times was so bad that I vowed not to go back. And I am still upset that I returned.
I am in the service industry and my friends and I went there to grab a beer after work. For the most part the bartenders ignored us. If we asked for something, they behaved as if we were such an inconvenience to their leaning around time. One of my friends had knocked over a beer and we were told ?the mop is around the corner.? I could understand the bartender joking with us if we were being drunk and obnoxious, but we were looking to unwind after a hard shift and it didn?t sound like a joke to any of us.
The second time I went, I decided I needed to try the food after hearing all the rave reviews and I shouldn?t scorn the place for two cranky bartenders. Was I wrong. We were ignored again. It was even more unacceptable because we were sitting right behind the beer taps, a place the bartender was all the time. It took more than 45 minutes to get the food which we had to ask the bar back to get for us. It was ice cold and I couldn?t even get her attention to tell her so.

I love, love, love Raleigh Times! Working downtown, I go there for lunch at least once a week! They have the best burger I have ever tasted (even compared to home cooked!), I also enjoy the cheese, tomato and avacado sandwich - it is delicious. Great fries and chips too. The best thing that I get every time now is the Chop Salad with Garlic Ranch Dressing - I want to lick my plate when I am done, it is the best salad around! My only complaints are the lack of space - not enough seats, the high ceilings make it very noisy in there too, so you have to yell sometimes to be heard. The only other thing is that the water is horrible. They must use city water (which many other downtown restaurants do) and it is awful. I always have to end up getting a soda (which I don't want to do), since I can't drink the water. I wish they would use filtered water. I highly recommend eating here - it is worth the weight and everything on the menu that I have tried is so good and so fresh.

We had tickets to a show nearby and were meeting another couple downtown for supper before the curtain. An hour and a half seemed a perfectly reasonable amount of time for pub food. More than 45 minutes after ordering we had to ask the waitress if our food would be out soon. 15 minutes after that she casually asked us "Oh, it's STILL not out?" like we were the ones to ask. She oh-so-generously offered to bring us our check right then, which we took her up on. Our food came out with just a few moments to scarf it down, sign our checks, and dash. I wish I'd had the stones to not tip her, but without any explanation I hesitate to hold a server responsible for what could just as easily be an understaffed or disorganized kitchen.
I'm sure that anyone could relay a story about a restaurant that was having a bad night and the ways that the restaurant handled it; managers coming to tables to apologize, offering a drink or dessert or even a discount, depending on the circumstances. The Raleigh Times didn't handle it at all.
With all that said, the food really is incredible; fresh, tasty, and well prepared. The beer list is expansive and the character of the old building is truly a Raleigh gem. I would simply not recommend it if you're on any kind of schedule. I would also lose any expectation of service above extremely casual.

I love the Raleigh Times. I do wish that it was bigger because it's hard to get a seat or even get in the door at night, but there's a reason for it! Everyone that works there is really nice, too. The food is delicious. Love the fried pickles, even the bbq is delicious! And I'm hard to please on the bbq. It's nice and juicy. The avocado, tomato, and parmesan sandwich is delicious, and the fries are great, too!

I've eaten at the Raleigh Times Bar on a couple occasions because it seems to be the only place I can find that is open for lunch on a Saturday. The food is always fantastic and that is what I go for. The menu is mostly sandwiches and burgers but they do have special plates and soups/salads. The service has never been perfect for me. You sit where ever you can find a clean table and eventually someone comes by with menus. It has been busy every visit so they get around to you when they can. It isn't a place I would go if I were in a hurry. The portions are definitely lunch-sized, I sometimes wish they were a little larger because the food is always delicious.

.

I cannot condone such a bad review of Raleigh Times. This place is super hip, had great food, great beer and I have great service every time I'm there. Even when the bar is slammed (which is all the time) I enjoy the scene and the service. I must say I miss the sausage app they took off the menu, but I will go on without it....

Looks like the Raleigh Times is getting beat up here. I personally have found the service to much better than it used to be. Lunch is a hell of a lot quicker and night time is much more umm... happier. The staff doesn't look like they have been horse whipped anymore. I have met both managers and Ben in the kitchen and none seem surly or NYC at all. What's this about them telling you to grab a seat? IT"S A BAR!! What do you want to happen, someone to hold your hand and tell you it'll be ok? Look the food is great, the beer list is wonderful, the atmosphere is very cozy and the staff is nicer. I'll like Jay and Dave too. The pony tail guy has to go I admit.
I'm glad you people won't be back there too busy anyway. I don't know why I bother with this site.

I would agree with most of the postings. I have been there several times and not sure why I go back. Atmosphere is good, food is typical for a bar, however the wait staff and bartenders are extremely rude. This is a bar and getting a beer or asking a question about the menu are common questions you receive at bars. The staff acts like you are bothering them no matter how small the task? If it is such a pain to get a beer, why are you a bartender?

It?s a shame the place does have a good atmosphere, but I won?t be spending my money or time in there anymore? too many places in Downtown that have a lot better staff and better food.

... awful service. The "c'mon in, sit anywhere" schitck just doesn't hold up this place, it's impossible to find a seat and when you do, the waitstaff ignores you. Literally. Or they're rude. My advice? Sit at the bar and pray that Dave or Jay Winfrey waits on you, they're two of the best bartenders in town, and a couple of the only reasons to frequent The Times. Great location, lots of potential, but I won't take this place seriously until the waitstaff perks up and starts treating their customers with a little respect and consideration. I mean, they are working for tips, right?

Anyone who knows the Raleigh Times Bar must recognize the latest and greatest review to be absolute PR BS. I have a hard time believing anyone who has been there has had anything close to the euphoric experience as described in the review below.
My story: I used to go the Times Bar at least 2-3 times a week- lunches, dinners, drinks. The food is the best bar food in the Triangle in one of the coolest settings around. That hasn?t changed. But I did get tired of being treated as if I was a nuisance to the staff. It doesn't matter if there are 2 or 200 people in the bar- you fight- and wait and wait and wait- to get menus, an order, your drinks, your food, the check, and so on. And that doesn?t even address the issue that when you are graced with the opportunity to place an order, chances are pretty high that your server will get something wrong. I used to let it slide because the staff seemed friendly. Then less and less friendly and now, it?s downright UNWELCOMING. I don?t know if it?s a pathetic attempt at exuding NYC cool or if the surly manager?s obvious contempt for the patrons has passes on to his staff. And you know what? I don?t know a single person who doesn?t feel the same way! (sounds like Wahoo below knows what I'm talking about)
Excuse my bitterness: I used to truly LOVE the Times Bar- in spite, or maybe even because of the flaws. It was my ?third place? (as in after home and work, not Five Points Cafe), now it?s just another place.

This weekend I had the pleasure of stumbling in to one of this cities best kept secrets! This place is great from start to finish! We started out sitting at the bar where we blown away by the decoration! I was so excited to be sitting in a bar with some history around here, no cookie cutters used here! We sat at the bar and were promptly greeted by the bartender, Chris who told us about the beer selection and what he recommended for everyones taste. I had the Dogfish Berliner-Weiss and my lady tried a Kolsch, 2 beers I have never even HEARD of! And we both fell in love! We ended up staying to grab something to eat from their kitchen that stays open til 2AM! My wife was excited to have multiple vegetarian options and I was sold when I tried their NC BBQ Nachos. I will definitely goack and its good to see their is more to Raleigh than Glenwood Avenue!

I just dont get it. I have been to this place probably 6 or 7 times because of the food, and 4 of the times i have had horrible service. I swore I wouldnt go back, but i heard they had new managment so i gave it another try. Once again i was disapointed! The food as always was good but my girlfriend and I were only 2 of 6 people in the place and the bartender not only ignored us but belched about 4 feet away from us (not a little accidental one a loud obnoxius belch). I GIVE UP good food or not i will not go back.

The Raleigh Times, if you don't know it you don't know anything. I have been coming here for the last few months and what you have is this. The atmosphere is played perfectly with the newspaper of past. There is no feel of "concept" at all. Easily the best food at the price. It is bar food however you just don't get bar food like this anywhere. There is not a better beer list anywhere in the Triangle. Bigger yes, none better. If you do know the bar you probably know about the lack luster service, not bad, just not great. Well not anymore, theres new management it seems which prompted me to write this. My last three months I have never had anyone really take much interest in me until the last two times I was in there. I was in one night with a few friends and one girl with us said she wanted wine but not any of the ones offered. A guy a few tables away must have heard that and he stopped what he was doing got up and came over. Said his name was David and asked the girl what she liked. He said he'd be right back. He returned with a few bottles of white wine opened them and poured her a few tastes. She asked how much they cost and he replied four and five dollars! Where are there 4 and 5 buck glasses of wine? He mentioned that there weren't on the list yet but would be by the coming weekend. We spent about five minutes speaking with him and he really just made her night. She tried three of the new wines and was surprised how good they were. I honestly enjoyed the entire exchange with David he really seemed love that bar and said he felt lucky to inherit such a great place. The next time he saw us walk in and stopped to say hi. That was the first time that anyone remembered us there. It great to see someone taking interest. Note that I consult with food and beverage groups nationally and my eye is trained for this stuff. I hope the new fella keeps it up, he has indeed convinced me. Here's to the bar keep, thanks for looking out for us.

Pros: The food, the drink, the venue, the manager.

Cons: Hopefully none soon.

I'm new to the area, and I've been looking for the perfect burger. Well, my search is over. Raleigh Times makes the juiciest, tastiest hamburger I've ever had, and I've eaten them the world over. Here's a tip, though: order it medium-rare, despite what the waitress might tell you. The ambience in the place is great: industrial, airy, but still cozy enough to not feel cold. While the drinks may be a little pricey, their phenomonal selection takes precedence, with a wide array of scotches and Belgian beers. The arugula salad was fresh and earthy, and the loaded fries perfectly done (fried, then baked with the toppings...fantastic). I went fairly early on a weeknight, so I don't know how the bar scene is. But I'll definitely be back regularly for that burger.

Pros: Out of this world burger; bar food with gourmet flair; good service; great drink selection

Cons: Drinks can be a little expensive

Just tried this place last weekend for the first time. It was fantastic! The food is comfort bar food with a creative twist. Amazing beer selection and a quaint warm atmosphere. You must order the fried pickles...they are much better than one would expect and the thing that will keep me coming back to this place!
It gets a little crowded later at night, so get there early for a good dinner. One of the rare mid-range eateries in the area...in that $10-12 range, making it a nice cheap date night downtown.

Cons: crowded and maybe a bit loud.

I think my title really says it all. The fact that it is a historic landmark just adds to this great watering hole. If you like good beer and "semi-healthy" bar food, this is the place to meet your friends to wind down.
