    Really bad BBQ.
Bad sign #1 - there's not a hint of smoke emanating from this tourist trap.
Bad sign #2 - there's a framed article hanging on the wall of the restaurant, written for some trade association newsletter, about how Sooey's was started by two guys who used to work in the wholesale restaurant supply business. Nothing about their BBQ experience, or lifelong love of barbecue, or anything related to smoke, meat, or decent food. Nope, these guys know ketchup packets, plastic cutlery and where to get cheap frozen foods. Which leads me to...
Spongy chicken wings - I would guess the life-cycle of these monstrous little creatures was something like - heavily battered (cause batter is cheaper than chicken) and deep-fried at some factory then flashed frozen and packaged in bags, then stored in a freezer at Sooey's, then taken right out of the bag and baked at Sooey's, then heavily sauced. Nobody could eat them at our house - we ordered two dozen; we ate maybe 6 wings total.
The ribs were bizarrely inedible - dry, tasteless, almost transformed from their original state, as if they had been prepared, then refrigerated, then warmed-up to be served, but then not served and re-refrigerated, then maybe warmed-up again, and then served. We couldn't eat them. They are still in the fridge. We're leaving the OBX tomorrow. They'll be thrown in the garbage sometime tonight.
Brisket: pulled brisket (an approach to brisket which can be delicious - see the Virginia Barbecue Company in Ashland, VA for an excellent example); at Sooey's they seem to be stewing the meat in ketchup; dreadful, but the least dreadful of all the dishes we were served.
Fried chicken: KFC quality, but more expensive.
Though each dish found its own distinct way to be terrible, they all shared a trademark indifference to quality, as if the people running Sooey's just don't care if the food is any good. And why should they? They've expanded to four locations and the tourists just keep pouring in to eat this garbage.
Is good BBQ hard to find on the OBX? Yes. Is this possibly the worst BBQ on the OBX? Oh yes, yes it is.
