They have great breakfast burritos & muffins, usually a wait on weekend mornings but they have cute outside seating, great for spring weather here in NC. Also they have a special decorate your own birthday cupcake for kids, my girls love

I took a friend here for coffee today and was amazed to find out that the Mad Hatter charges $5.00 for an iced mocha. It was just a bit of coffee and chocolate milk in a plastic cup full of crushed ice. Five dollars? Really? ----

They offer a selection of mediocre cooked food and pretty nasty danishes. The brownies and cookies are OK. The best thing there is the selection of croissants trucked in from the incomparable Guglhupf. Come early in the morning if you want to get one. If you come early in the morning, you'll also avoid their arbitrary midday wi-fi cutoff. ----

Not nearly as nice as Joe van Gogh or even the Broad Street Cafe, but the convenience to East Campus is hard to beat.

Great bakery! Also they have a lot of food choices if you just want to hang out. And they do have free wi-fi. Mostly students hang out here.... I have been there a few times.

I purchased a piece white cake with chocolate icing from Mad Hatter's last night. I was shocked to find that most of it was icing. You could see where 1 pan of cake had been sliced in to 3 pieces and then stacked with excessive amounts of icing between each layer. Basically, each layer of icing was as thick or thicker than each layer of cake. The cake-to-icing ratio was way off. The cake had a good flavor, but I ended up scrapping the layers of icing off the cake. Otherwise, it would have been too much. I first went to Mad Hatter's 14 years ago and they made some of the best cakes around. As of late, the quality has taken a nose dive. It is obvious that Mad Hatters is making some adjustment in this shaky economy, but that doesn't mean you fill a cake with icing. I would rather have a shorter cake than one made taller with icing.

Mad Hatter has everything for a casual meal that is anything but typical. The food tastes fresh and refreshing, not heavy. They have lots of vegetarian and healthy options as well as sinful treats like cookies and cakes. They have free wi-fi, so you'll find lots of Duke students camped out. When it's really busy, they do take up some needed tables, but I've never had to wait long for a table to open up. My young son loves to go there, and I love the wasabe wrap with salmon. Yummy!

We would go here anytime! My family has gotten lunch there many times and the food has always been wonderful. They have a nice selection and healthy options for kids. Their baked goods are hard to beat, and they have a large variety of specialty cakes to order ahead of time. We often like to stop in and browse the variety of cakes they have already available and select one of our old favorites (the mint is amazing, and the ever present black and white is always a nice treat). I love scones, and their chocolate chip scones are exceptionally yummy - but due to the high demand their batches sometimes sell out fast.

Wow. I had just picked up the phone to order several cakes from Mad Hatter for a party I am having. I am not going to place an order based on the negative reviews I have just read. Have been several times myself and thought the food was okay, but yes the wait staff was rude, and I figured at least the cakes that they built their business on would be safe. Obviously not. And obviously they need to get rid of the cake guy that seems to be coming up again and again in the reviews before Mr. Personality drives everyone away with his charm. Bye Mad Hatters. There are plenty of other great businesses that will be happy to give me my cakes..........

Ok, first, let me say that I actually like the place "ok". I think their bakery/cake stuff is ok. I like sweets. I like coffee. I like hanging out with my friends and drink coffee and eat sweets. This place is good for that.

But do not ever order their noodle soup. I should share the blame for ordering a noodle soup at a bake shop. I should have ordered something that is baked. Their noodle soup is simply the worst noodle soup I have ever had. This is nothing personal. It's just that, I look back at all the times that I ordered noodle soup, and I can name none that's worse.

Personally, I think almost all the mexican restaurants around here taste the same. You order one of those combos with a taco, burrito, and rice. Can you distinguish one from another? I can't. But this noodle soup is so bad that I'll always remember the place for how bad it is. Everything else is pretty nice. They should just take that embarrassment off the menu, if they haven't already. This was a while back.

As a Duke undergrad, I loved the cakes at Mad Hatters, so when it came time to choose a baker for our wedding, Mad Hatters was the obvious choice. I ignored the advice of a florist, who told me that he was embarrassed about the looks and taste of a cake from here at a recent wedding that he helped with, thinking that surely he was just being dramatic. The only part of our planning process that went smoothly with this baker was the meeting where they got their money. After that, it made absolutely no difference what I had asked for (specifically no fondant icing) or how many times I called trying to speak with Jason, who I was told was the only person I could speak with to confirm my details. Not only did my cake come with fondant icing that was so dry it just fell off the cake when it was cut, the cake itself was so dry it must have been made MANY days ahead of our big day. Guests and family also expressed their disappointment with the cake, since I'd talked up how good it would be - how embarrassing! It pains me to even see pictures of the cake from our wedding day because it makes me angry all over again thinking about the $1,200 we wasted with these horribly organized and unattentive bakers. Don't make the same mistake I did.....or at least be prepared to write your own bad review after your event!

after frequenting a number of like priced, quick food establishments, it is nice to finally see one deliver on their hype. i am sick of eating so so food out of baskets or the ubiquitous metal tray. at mad hatters, i got a tasty fresh meal (spicy shrimp wrap one time and goat cheese salad another time) in a great portion size on a real plate served in a warm light filled dining room surrounded by local art. considering their organic and made from scratch food the price is a bargain. i can easily spend as much at whole foods without the portion size, service or ambiance. i will come again and again - next time the specialty hot dog!

Pros: good price for what you get, rotating local art, light filled warm dining room

Cons: more seating would be great - another move to a larger building?

.

thank you mad hatter for having delicious organic food and friendly service. the atmosphere is wonderful and cheery. thanks for having the intelligence to cut off wi-fi at lunch - its nice when people are talking and enjoying the food and not clicking away ignoring each other. when i want to get some work done (wi-fi is only off during the lunch hours) i come in the early afternoon and surf away with coffee and cake! love this establishment and hope they will be around for years to come....

As I was looking for the phone number to order my husband's bday cake, I was VERY surprised by all the negative cake reviews. We have been always 100% satisfied with the selection of cakes, not only the ones on hand but I specialty ordered three large different cakes for my son's graduation party, as well as a new years party, which all were perfect. The party goers raved about the cakes and even went themselves and had a great outcome. It totally beats anyplace in town!!!!!

have always enjoyed this almost landmark establishment during my time here in durham - wanted to relay a specific experience however

went to an event at mad hatter's catered by mad hatter's on sunday night - the food was amazing (the lobster nachos and high end "smores" dessert were especially good) and the atmosphere put together by jason balius was fantastic - will have them do my holiday catering if they have the time

thanks for being here in durham, mad hatter!

I was surprised to see the bad reviews - I consider myself fairly hard to impress when it comes to restaurants, but have been to Mad Hatter's about 10 times and have always really enjoyed the food. Staff there have never been rude to us either. Their eggs benedict and quesadillas with home-made lime sour cream are really good. Their specialty cakes are also all delicious (especially the strawberry and blueberry/lemon ones) - I've tried them all at work parties at one time or another. I have never ordered a custom cake from them however.

Sure, the cupcakes were good. BUT when I had a simple billing inquiry I was treated very rudely. As a corporate client who probably would have given them repeat business they treated me I personally conned them out of tons of money. When I called them and tried to have a conversation about my bill I could barely get a word in edgewise. All in all, the service STINKS and I wouldn?t recommend using them for anything, not to mention an important. So much for customer service - they won?t be getting any more business from me!

We decided to use Mad Hatter's for my daughter's wedding. They were gracious and eager when we first met, but as time went on, we could not get our questions answered. Three days before my daughter's wedding, I was in the restaurant to confirm details of the cake. One of the employees called the person in charge of wedding cakes and he did not want to speak with me on the phone. I confirmed the details through the employee. The layers were correct, but the icing was not. What we got was a fondant that fell away from the cake in sheets. As one who does frequent business through my work with Mad Hatter's, the cake was not the quality I have come to expect from them. A guest at the reception thought it was a packaged cake. Very disappointing.

I met a friend for lunch there a few weeks ago. Lunch was pretty good, although a bit overpriced. I bought a cake for my mother's birthday. It looked gorgeous but when we ate it that night, it was not just tasteless but bad. The cake was mediocre but the icing was awful. I was stunned since I thought this place was supposed to be a really good bakery. Wouldn't buy any baked good there again.

I'll never be confused for a local, but the Mad Hatter is one of the bright spots for me since leaving New York. I enjoy lunch there whenever I can, but the best part for me is the bakery. The cakes, cannoli, etc. are outstanding. The only thing that could make it better is if I could get them to make a seven layer cake.

I saw the rating on CitySearch & decided to check it out. i was in the process of looking for a baker for my wedding. One afternoon last week, my fiance & I decided to go to Mad Hatters for lunch & to inquire about their cakes. WHOA!!!! First of all, the kitchen looks totally dirty, the bathroom had a leaky ceiling, & honestly the food was sooooooooooo wickedly bad that we did not get past two bites off our plates let alone try any deserts!!!
Every person that gave this place rave reviews is NUTS!! This place looks like an old cafeteria with colorful plastic chairs & the parking lot has about 10 weirdly angled spots!!
Trust me when I say, STAY AWAY!!

I ordered a baby shower cake in person and immediately noticed that the male counter person was less than helpful and seemed to be bothered by having to to take my order. Despite this, I decided on a cake covered in white icing that would have baby booties, rattles and bottles with light blue icing being the accent color and the color of the wording on the cake. This was all written on the sales ticket. Imagine my disappointment when I arrived to pick up the cake hours before the shower and saw that cake was covered in dark blue icing. I immediately voiced my disapproval and they offered to "fix" the cake while I waited. I couldn't come back for the cake as I lived in Raleigh as I had more preparations to do being the hostess of the shower. The cake was then a rush job in my opinion. The icing was super soft since it didn't have a chance to harden and thus was a mess to serve. I paid over $50 for this cake!! An overpriced cake for the lousy service from the counter person and poor skills from the cake decorator. From this experience, I won't be going back and will continue to tell my family, friends and co-workers not to use Mad Hatter's either. I wish I had read Mad Hatter's reviews prior to making my cake order. Don't waste your time with Mad Hatter's Bakery and take your business to a more reputable baker/decorator.

A studying-friendly place, where you can get some good food. However, it can be difficult to get a table on the weekends, especially on sunday during brunch hours.

My Family has been getting cakes from the madhatters for years and the cakes have always been great, but what really makes the cake is the custom decorating and great service. The atmosphere is also warm and inviting with free wi-fi(which can be pain during lunch). The food fresh and unique, the salmon and crab cakes are some of the best in town, and the hot thai wrap is always a great fall back. The one item I would stay away from is the noodle bowls. Also their new breakfast menu is a great change.

The Mad hatter is attractive and well lit. There's free wireless and a strip of power outlets on the wall. But please, don't eat there. We were there once and ordered french fries which were clearly made with old oil. The second time, we went for dinner. The food was served cold, and my mom got sick. To make up for the bad food, they gave us a free cake, which tasted like plastic or freezer burn.

The decor and location is so nice I might go again, just for coffee, but I'm going to bring my own muffin. That being said, I haven't tried the coffee yet.

Check out the new menu! Very good. I love that the mad hatter's changes their menu every so often. The rant about cake tasting is stupid. My friend did a wedding cake there and there is no price minimun. They have a set price per person. This amount was still the lowest around for comparible cake.

i LOVE the mad hatter! great new menu -yummy!! - you cannot get this quality anywhere without paying twice the price. i don't know what is up with the reviews saying the cakes were just okay... i get all my sweets and "occasion" cakes from here and they are fantastic - delicious and sooo beautiful - comparing them to wherehouse cakes is CRIMINAL! who are these people? i do agree that the mad hatter's is busy though - as one would expect from such a great place... hopefully they will open another location soon! my friends in chapel hill would love to have one out there...

I used to think it was such a treat to visit Mad Hatter's in their original location. Loved breakfast and the desserts were to die for. The new location is even better but I think qualilty has suffered. The last 3 cakes I've ordered tasted stale. I even asked it the cake was fresh and was assured it would be made the day ordered but it definitely tasted stale. They must freeze the cake and assemble when requested. I'll still consider an occasional breakfast or brunch (if I can find a place to sit) but I'm passing on the desserts. More trendy than actual quality.

I know that some swear that this is the best cake available, but really it's just okay cake. The frosting has an odd texture and the cake themselves are not that flavorful. I've had much better sucess with their meals. Every meal I've tried has been fresh and tasty. I actually think Costco has a much better tasting cake.

My fiance and I try to make it at least once a week for brunch (on the weekends) or a lunch date (during the week). We love it, but I have to tell him what I want and while he's in line I will go hunt for a table. We have found this strategy works the best :) Also, it gets slightly annoying when its a busy Sunday morning and there are 20 people waiting for a seat (sometimes with their food in hand) and there is someone with a laptop sitting alone at a 4 top table.

Pros: great food, nice place, decent price

Cons: seating, parking

Went for brunch this Saturday and had the most amazing eggs benedict. My hubby tried the veggie omelet with organic shitake mushrooms, the food was superb. I picked up some cupcakes for Easter Sunday and had such a pleasant time. Theyre a real treasure to Durham.

Pastries about as good as you could find... at a grocery store. Mediocre coffee. Barely adequate breakfast. I can't, for the life of me figure out why this place gets any love at all. The simple fact that there's a dirth of breakfast joints around goes some way to explain why people actually come here, but that doesn't mean you have to like it.

Despite this, people seem brainwashed. "Ooh, we got our cake from Mad Hatter!" Big deal. There are a few good bakeries in the area and this isn't one of them. Heck, I've gotten better stuff from the big membership wholesale places.

I have frequented Mad Hatter's since they opened at their original location. I've become a regular and love the free coffee refills and wireless internet. Service has always been friendly and fast. I was disappointed however when I recently tried to order a wedding cake. I approached the owner/manager for information about ordering a cake and he bluntly asked me if I had $500. I was astounded at the price of the cake but more so at the rudeness of the man. He was unwilling to give me additional information about the cake and told me that unless I spent $500 a tasting was out of the question as the Mad Hatter was "a cakeshop that would go broke if people had a tasting for every little $100 cake they sold". I am sad to say that I will no longer frequent the restaurant and will take my $500 elsewhere.

This place has really great food for brunch or lunch. It's a little pricy for what it is, but the food is very good.

I was scared that the Madhatter would go down hill when it was sold to the owners fo Saladliea, just a few months in almost the entire staff has turned over, most of whom had been there for years, the wasabi salmon wrap was 95% rice 4%asian slaw and 1% salmon for 10+. If you like to be cheated on food and see employees mistreated till they quit then you'll love the new regime at the Madhatter.

I thought this cafe was so cute and I loved the name. My experience dining there was horrible. I ordered the lunch special (I came at 1:15pm). It was a simply steak taco, but it took 20 minutes for it to arrive and it only arrived after I brought it to the attention of the server. 10 minutes later, my entree arrived with a weak excuse that it takes a while to prepare my dish!! It is fried steak, cheese and tomatoes! It only takes 5 minutes...not to mention my extra side of sour cream (that I paid for) was missing.

Recommended by many as THE place to get a wedding cake, but staying away because of the horrendous customer service. Made numerous calls and emailed the wedding cake specialist since I live in Raleigh and my fiancé lives in Chapel Hill. No email response, its been two weeks! Left three messages for the wedding cake specialist to call me back. The staff seems very inconvenienced and annoyed with answering the phone. Once I was asked to hold on the phone and subsequently asked for my name and number so he could return my call in a couple minutes to take my message. Give me a break! FINALLY received a call today from an annoyed individual - judging by his rudeness. He quoted an absurd rate per person ($$$$$ dollars per slice) - more than the best in the Triangle! We will happily take our business elsewhere and spread the word!

I keep going there because the veggie burger is awesome (big and just as full of fat as a meat burger, with delicious thick fries!), and it's a great place for an early breakfast. The iced cookies seem to be made more for appearance than for taste, but they've grown on me. I've also had some good muffins there. I haven't found that many other things I like on the menu, but a few good things are enough for me.

Sometimes (but not always), the service has been slow, so don't go there when you're in a hurry. Also, watch out for peak times. There are WAY too many people there for Sunday brunch (it's too popular!).

I'm a self-proclaimed choco-holic with no desire for sobriety, but Mad Hatter always lets me down. Sure, their cookies are the best around, and they make an out-of-this-world strawberry shortcake, but when it comes to anything chocolate don't waste your time here. I'll admit I'm a bit of a chocolate snob, but there are plenty of places in the Triangle that serve excellent chocolate cakes, cheesecakes, and mousses; Mad Hatter just doesn't cut it. I like their breakfast food but I'm always disappointed with lunch. I was so excited to see gnocchi on their menu, but it was truly dreadful. This seems to happen every time I visit Mad Hatterthe menu looks great, and the food disappoints. I now stay away unless Im looking for a good cookie or a non-chocolate cake. I know this place is widely liked, but I can't for the life of me figure out why.

Enjoyed a delicious breakfast with pancakes that were made just right (not too cakey, not too dry) and were reasonably priced for a stack of 3. My daughter's Belgian waffle was also tasty. Howevever, their cookies are overpriced, as are their coffee drinks (and I thought no one charged more than Starbucks for a cafe mocha). The chocolate chip cookie is divine (and large enough to share) but their children's decorated cookies are way overpriced and, though adorably decorated, not very good.

My first time here I did not know what to expect. You start at the bakery counter to order your food, which made me order a smaller portion to be able to make room for dessert, which was fantastic! Good healthy food and a great baked goods selection.

For a coffee house to close at 11 on Fri & Sat, and then 4PM!! on Sun is inexcusable. What's a coffee house FOR if not for camping out, and sipping after supper, activities and events.

Parking is also difficult if not mpossible on wkdays for lunch.

A quiet revolution in food is taking place at this restaurant that has thus far gone unnoticed by our triangle press. The taste of the supremely fresh, high quality ingredients are not masked by heavy sauces and processing. Rather, the natural flavors are allowed to take center stage. The noodle bowls are a fine example. The delicate broth with a fiery red sauce on the side to add at one's discretion allows the natural flavors of the vegetables to come through. An obvious California "living food" influence is present. On the other end of the caloric spectrum, the eggs benedict, with hollandaise from scratch, is done in a similar manner with the flavor of the ham and bread paring with the egg and sauce instead of being hidden by it. Tastes as if from a farm b+b run by a gourmet chef. Large portions mean always leftovers for later...

The new house specialties are as good or better than the fare at Pop's, Southern Seasons, Elaine's - at a fraction of the cost. Specifically try the gnocci (best I've had in Durham, Chapel Hill or Charlotte), salmon (unbelievably good with an incredibly complex flavor mix) and the crab cakes (just the right amount of spice) - all under $10. How they are doing what they do at such a low price is a mystery. The new owner's previous training at Masa's in SF is shining through with these new additions to the menu. Go for dinner (although the menu is available all day) soon before it gets as busy after dark as it is at lunch. Oh yeah, the desserts are great and the cakes are my most consistently appreciated presents.

the food here is great!!!! try the bombay wrap, the chicken salad and the daily soup specials (with a biscuit to dip with). i'm not a big dessert person (although my friend had their beautiful and delicious wedding cake from here) but word of mouth said that the new food menu was KICKING.... had tried one of mad hatter's wraps at a catered conference and liked that so thought I would give the place a try. I am sooo glad I did! I am now a true mad hatter FAN - been back three times this week for lunch and am going to drop in on Sunday for their brunch (heard the home fries are wonderful with just a little spiciness...) Oh, I did have a "black and white cookie" for dessert yesterday - HEAVEN

i only had dessert here so far (slice of carrot cake plus a bite of my girlfriend's coconut cake), and it was solid - quite good. i've heard from different sources that the regular non-dessert food is OK, standard, nothing special. good location for duke students. conclusion: go here for DESSERT.

as an on again, off again vegetarian i was happy to see that mad hatter's offers so many tasty and filling vegetarian selections. almost all of their wraps are available in both meat and vegetarian forms, and all of their other menu categories have at least one veggie selection. even the daily specials usually have one meatless choice. the food is consistently good, price is reasonable and the atmosphere can't be beat... AND they do everything to go so if I don't feel like cooking at home I have a reasonable alternative for dinner. by the way, the average meal price listed on this site is incorrect (too high)
